  1. That’s an extremely agonising and poignant phrase. Someone’s last spoken sentence before they die. Heartbreaking.

  2. //Someone’s last spoken sentence before they die. Heartbreaking.//

All the more heartbreaking in that it’s a desperate but vain hope. All those thousands who died simply disappeared into the great void, everything they ever were or thought or imagined was annihilated. Murder is the ultimate crime; when you kill someone, you are destroying a universe.

That’s pretty profound. Just think of the millions of universes that have been destroyed in the XXI century alone.

September the 11th is also a personal anniversary for me. Today is the thirteenth anniversary of my friend Harry Holland’s murder. He left a wife and three daughters behind after a lowlife scumbag cunt stuck a screwdriver in his head as Harry tried to dissuade him from stealing his work van:

  4. Any killing is an awful agony for the loved ones left behind but there must also be such continuing anger and exasperation at the pointless trivial reason to end a life and cause such pain and devastation to a family all over an attempt to steal a van. I imagine you mist feel such quiet rage Paul every Sept 11 as you remember your friend’s murder.

  5. I feel happiness at good memories Colm and anger at the leniency of the sentence but mostly I just feel sadness at such a positive life being so nonchalantly and needlessy extinguished.

  6. I can’t believe Harry Holland’s murder was 13 years ago. It seems like no time ago.

  7. Four days before I moved, Seamus. I wasn’t able to go to the funeral 🙁

  8. Sad story, Paul. I checked and see that his killers were released four years ago, almost exactly on the anniversary of the murder.

  9. I remember that tragedy from the news reports, Paul. Horrendous.

It seems bizarre that 9/11 is 19 years ago. I spent a wonderful J1 Summer in Boston in 01 and returned early from Logan on 1st September as I got my masters place.

  10. Murder is the ultimate crime; when you kill someone, you are destroying a universe…..

Noel what show book or movie is that from…. I know I’ve heard it before but can’t place it.

Paul sorry this post caused a reopening of pain and that such a horrible day has an extra layer of horror for you.

  11. Patrick

I just Googled that phrase but nothing came up. Perhaps it really is a Noel original !

  12. could be I couldn’t find it either, and no aspersions towards Noel, but I know I’ve heard…..

    dejavu ?

  13. Patrick

Perhaps you are thinking of the Islamic verse from the Quran that says something along the lines of “if you murder one person it is as if you have killed all mankind”

  14. There’s a similar line in the Talmud and the Koran. The Koran was partially lifted from the Talmud and the Bible so that’s possibly the origin.

  15. snap !

  16. All dates matter

  17. I remember Harry’s murder well, and the absolute heartbreak and feeling of sadness it left over our community. I know the family quite well, like Paul. In fact, I posted this video a while back, which Phantom liked and said he would share:

    This is Harry’s daughter.

His widow would be in the café in my work every week, before the lockdown. A stronger woman ye’d look long to find.

  18. Seamus,
//I can’t believe Harry Holland’s murder was 13 years ago. It seems like no time ago.//

I can’t believe his killer received such a short sentence.

  19. Paul,

That’s rough. I’m sorry to hear that. I think the Covid situation has thrown up a lot of that, with families and friends left with further pain due to not being able to properly grieve.

    Dave,

Honestly I can. Average murder tariff in Northern Ireland is about 15 years. Factor in his age, a guilty plea etc… and it isn’t overly surprising. It should have been considerably more but I do think the judiciary in Northern Ireland gives greater weight to mitigating factors than aggravating factors.

Given the history of criminality by McKee, his family (who are pretty much all scum), the aggrevating factor that there was drink and drugs involved, and the gloating behaviour of McKee (he texted his girlfriend laughing and joking about the murder) etc… leads to a conclusion that rehabilitation would be harder in McKee’s case. Thus the sentence should have been considerably longer.

  20. “if you murder one person it is as if you have killed all mankind”

Is that really in the Bible and Koran? I remember I was chewing the fat with a mate once into the wee hours. He had just lost his father, who was a big inspiration on him and had, he said, gave him every thought and memory he ever had. The idea occurred to me when I was listening to him.

  21. Qur’an 5:32

Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption – it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one – it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.

    Talmud 4:9

Whoever destroys a soul of Israel, it is considered as if he destroyed an entire world. And whoever saves a life of Israel, it is considered as if he saved an entire world.

I don’t remember that in the Quran, but I could be wrong.
I do remember both books have similar passages saying that state if you sin against a person you’re also sining against God.
