For Kurt

By Patrick Van Roy On October 16th, 2020

As I’ve said I offer any of you that spend your time here everyday the opportunity to write a piece on something you feel passionate about, or believe will evoke a discussion. The following is a piece crafted by Kurt, it is more a piece for discussion I feel safe in saying, rather than anything he himself is passionate about.

Faith in the ballot

That’s the title of  an article in the Harvard Gazette by Lauren Kerby , herself a recent author of a book called  “Saving History: How White Evangelicals Tour the Nation’s Capital and Redeem a Christian America,”
She raises four important identifiers to describe this group of  loyal Trump voters ,
referring to them via a delineation of roles :

Founder, exile, victim and saviour

noting how if one isn’t working they can easily switch to another!

For example

” For instance, as founders they can appeal to the authority of George Washington and other Christian leaders in early America to justify things like posting “In God We Trust” in schools. But if, say, something unflattering comes to light about a white evangelical leader, the victim role lets him dismiss it as an attack from anti-Christian forces. It’s a ready-made defense.

She puts things into perspective as regards the reaction to and against Obama

” In 2014 and 2015, white evangelicals were feeling really under siege, and that came up a lot in the tours. They felt deeply threatened by Barack Obama, the Affordable Care Act, and the pending Obergefell v. Hodges (2015) decision that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. I think a lot of us, not just white evangelicals, felt like progressive values were winning at the time.

But even now with Trump in office,  with over 200 newly appointed conservatives judges, a republican senate,  2 conservative judges and a 3rd on the way, you’d imagine grounds for optimism but you’d be wrong.

That feeling of being under siege is too politically expedient to disappear any time soon. Trump is still using the same jeremiad and talking about the threats to Christianity and “our way of life.”
