Because Friday night is Music Night

The North of England; ever been there? It’s all flat caps, whippet-fancying and stodgy food. That’s your brief tour. To anyone thinking of accusing me of relying on old cartoon cliches let me stop you right now and say you’re absolutely correct. But I am thinking of our friends in the North. Boris has locked them down again so they’re feeling glum. They have nowhere to go and nothing to do. The weekend looms and all they have to look forward to is two days of staring out at the rain while talking to the whippets.

A northern soul classic then, and what a banger it is too. You out there in the colonies might be surprised to learn that our glum northern friends once appropriated all this stuff for their own, but it’s true. You could do worse, a lot worse. In the late sixties and early seventies, in the Midlands and the North, you were either bopping to northern soul or inventing heavy metal. There’s your brief musical tour also.

Have fun whatever you’re up to this weekend, even you northerners. As always, feel free to share your top sounds down below –

  1. I was too young (and in the wrong part of the country) for the glory days (nights) of Northern Soul at its height but I would love to have been going to those genuinely euphoric dance marathons. Watching those devoted fans intensely letting themselves go to that fantastic music all night and into the morning in those Northern ballrooms has always made me retrospectively want to have been part of that more than any other music scene .

  2. Surely there was nothing more glamorous than Wigan getting down to Frank Wilson. I kid, but while the middle classes extoll their culture the working class could always hold its own –

  3. Mesmerizing animation:

  4. Couple of decent tunes you posted there Pete.

  5. This is the slow movement from Shostakovich Piano Concerto No 2. The composer wrote this for his pianist son who played it at its premier in 1958. This is five minutes of music to chill to:

  6. Lovely bit of classical as always Peter.

Did you get a chance to listen to my track?

  7. As advertisements go, I’d say this is only second place to the Jean-Claude Van Damme Volvo advert.

  8. Did you get a chance to listen to my track?

    Yes Dave, lovely graphics 🙂

  9. I’d say this is only second place to the Jean-Claude Van Damme Volvo advert.

Who knew the royals could break dance? Good catch Dave.

  10. An absolutely spectacular title choice, Pete. In my top five soul songs of all time with this being at number one:

  11. Cheers Peter.

  12. That’s quite the lavish production, Dave.

This should be right up your street. I love this, maybe because of the Rose Royce sample or maybe because it reminds my of being 21, an absolutely superb time in my life:

  13. I never really liked that S’Express song at the time it came out but listening to it just now having not heard it in years, I realise its quite good and a lot better than the utter formulaic crap that fills the charts and airwaves today (or am I just becoming a grumpy old git ? )

  14. It’s a great bubblegum pop tune, Colm.

And yes, you are a grumpy old shite.

  15. that’s kamala singing back at me ( i got the hots for you )
err .. maybe, or it might just be all in my head
    Hmmn? tricky one 😉

  16. Paul. Good choice.

As you probably already guessed, that tune is in my collection.

    Here’s another similar classic.

  17. But there’s one thing I know
The blues they send to meet me
Won’t defeat me, it won’t be long
Till happiness steps up to greet me ( Joe Biden )
Raindrops keep falling on my head
But that doesn’t mean my eyes will soon be turning red
    Crying’s not for me
‘Cause I’m never gonna stop the rain by complaining
    Because I’m free
    Nothing’s worrying me

  18. Now that Felix song is another one I haven’t heard in ages. That was a great tune. Dave The best dance song of the nineties in my opinion.

  19. I hadn’t heard that before and it did nothing for me.

I’ve never been to a rave and barring Bill Drummond & KLF dance music largely passed my by without much interest. I have to say though, I loved the rock and electronic fusion of this one hit wonder:

  20. Colm,

Now that Felix song is another one I haven’t heard in ages. That was a great tune. Dave The best dance song of the nineties in my opinion.

I salute you sir! You and me are in total agreement. That was my favourite tune to large it to.

  21. Spencer Davis shuffles off his mortal coil 🙁

  22. The Boomtown Rats Someone’s Looking At You TOTP 24 01 1980

  23. The last good thing they ever did, Kurt.

  24. 🙂

I’ve heard it said , everything after Prufrock by T.S.Eliot was just ball scratching ; and what a poem …

    sorry Noel 😉

  25. Boomtown Rats were overrated shit in my opinion.

And Bob Geldof is a wanker.

  26. lol soo opiniated DaveA
I guess you been reading your books
trouble is look what is makes ya – quite an unpleasant person !
on Mother Theresa, Ghandi, now Sir Bob you’re just an angry gammon
be better not to know , I reckon – not doing ya much good is it ..
peace and love go out the window when we rant

    here’s another one

oh and bye the way this is brilliant

    she’s so modern

  27. The only angry, opinionated person here is you Kurt.

Once again you turn this into a personal attack towards somebody on ATW.

Is it me or you have been banned from this site at least three times?

  28. ooh hi Harri
raw nerve DaveA , get lost, I know you’d spend the whole evening blagging on about how you despise Bob and the Rats, tell ya what shove it up your arse I’m not interested
bore another person to death with your hopeless self important impotent anger and rage
I’m enjoying this evening , and you can fuck right off pal 🙂

  29. Oh dear Kurt, you lose again.
You couldn’t have a constructive discussion, just like pat, you went straight to insults. What a child you are.

  30. hey any chance we could meet DaveB tonight, he might be more fun 😉

  31. You know daveA I really think you should write that book
There’s no such thing as goodness anymore
A bleak landscape outlining the Triumph of historical revisionism by post modernist and proud author DaveZee .
Filed under suicidal fiction in the library ! ( free noose included with first edition copies )

  32. have we got a closet calvanist in our midst ? hmmn?

famous for coining the doctrine of “total depravity “

  33. “ if he lies “ jumps around when I open it

Is this happening to anyone else

  34. kurt

If Dave A or anyone here wants to say a particular music act is “not to their liking” that isn’t an attack on any other commenters here. Chill out !

  35. Phantom

That could be caused by the very long hyperlink Allan has on his 1:06am comment on that thread. Sometimes when that happens it makes the wording of the whole thread appear very small and you have to manually adjust your own view settings. That is what it does on my device. Perhaps on your device it is making it ‘jumpy’ as it tries to adjust to the length of the hyperlink display

  36. Ahh

It is Allan’s fault after all 🙂

  37. Now that would be just a conspiracy theory 🙂

  38. Phantom.

Colm is correct. It’s the long string of text in Allan’s post causing a formatting problem.

Or it could be the Jews.

  39. Does Hunter Biden have an alibi

  40. Hunter Biden was in the back of a Pizza restaurant with Hilary Clinton, some Ukranians, a load of smuggled in Mexican Children, counting Chinese money and listening to instructions from the Russians at the time, so yes he has an alibi 🙂

  41. I’ve heard that if Trump gets elected for a second term, he’s going to sort out this formatting problem, much better than anybody else has ever sorted out a formatting problem before.

  42. more jokes :

If Hunter Biden got a blind man to fix 3 laptops for $85 bucks, he’s a much better deal maker than Trump. Maybe Hunter should run for President

Donald Trump should be investigated to see if he has any ties to the U.S.

  43. I see said the blind man

    It’s a conspiracy

  44. here’s a joke about revisionists flaying the backs of Ghandi, Mother Theresa and Geldof
well its more a cartoon, with my added caption

All your righteousness is filthy rags Isaiah 64:6
