Time indeed for a change!

By Mike Cunningham On October 18th, 2020

As this writer looks forward gloomily to a semi-permanent time when I am summarily deprived of any meaningful contact with my grandchildren, I do wonder if there will will come a time when a majority of Tory politicians see sense, end this loony-tunes lockdown era; and institute a time when hospitals and the health workers are tested and protected, along with care homes and the elderly, and the rest of the population are trusted to take care, and take their own decisions as to the risk to themselves and those closest to them?

I continue to argue that Lord Sumption’s way is the right way. I accept that I wrote in favour of lockdowns, but that has proved to be incorrect.

Time for a change!

  1. Are you in favor of everyone wearing masks, etc. until the time that you have a vaccine?

If you were all wearing masks, there would be no need for more lockdowns,

    You do know this?

  2. Masks, washing hands, not taking risks in crowded places: all of those things are worthwhile.

Seems to me that the rise in the stats is mainly because of the younger ones mixing and spreading onwards.

Deaths from Flu in 2017 were 28,000. So far this year, Covid-19 got 42,000: and mostly old people. If we all took care, and protected our elder relatives, we should be able to return to a semblance of normality.

  3. Not just the younger ones.

I think that there are plenty of middle aged and above there ( and here ) who aren’t taking this seriously.

And that everyone here in the UK, US and Ireland see this disregard for the safety of others by a number of others on a daily basis.

    That’s your problem.

  4. The lockdowns are literally killing people, suicide, drug overdose, for 3 months of the last 6 if you had cancer you couldn’t get kehmo, etc etc here is a letter that you should read. It’s a pdf so I couldn’t cut an paste it’s only one page long and ten pages of signatures but it’s worth reading to get a feel from the medical profession of the cost of this lockdown.

    https://www.scribd.com/document/462469213/Doctor-Letter#from_embed

Just cancer alone 150,000 New Cases of cancer are diagnosed every month, except for the last 6 months.

  5. a very short piece for you Mike…… I miss reading your articles, it’s good to see them show back up here again.

  6. gentlemen its very simple maths , we have to get R number down

    here:

Latest R number range for the UK
    1.3-1.5

Latest growth rate range for the UK
    +4% to +7%
    per day

An R number between 1.3 and 1.5 means that on average every 10 people infected will infect between 13 and 15 other people.

A growth rate between +4% and +7% means the number of new infections is growing by 4% to 7% every day.

The UK estimates of R and growth rate are averages over very different epidemiological situations and should be regarded as a guide to the general trend rather than a description of the epidemic state.

when we get to R < 1 we can begin to ease restrictions,
to not do that is to invite the covid to run riot across our cities and homes
meaning deaths, NHS stretched capacity on a host of levels. The gov't is taking the utilitarian approach, in other words what's best for the many ..

we have no choice .. bear with .. only move and grouse not
you need your energy to help out your families and be positive

  7. Here’s the author of the letter, Pat:

  8. and Paul?….. what she doesn’t meet your standards of a Dr ?

And even if she’s a voodoo high priestess…. does it change the 100s of thousands that have not been able to get chemo or that didn’t get diagnosed and the 1000s of other just medical consequences of the lockdown.

What point are you trying to make with pointing out this Dr?

  9. What point are you trying to make with pointing out this Dr?

That she’s a doctor but that she’s also a conservative political activist:

Republican political operatives are recruiting “extremely pro-Trump” doctors to go on television to prescribe reviving the U.S. economy as quickly as possible, without waiting to meet safety benchmarks proposed by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to slow the spread of the new coronavirus.

The plan was discussed in a May 11 conference call with a senior staffer for the Trump reelection campaign organized by CNP Action, an affiliate of the GOP-aligned Council for National Policy. A leaked recording of the hourlong call was provided to The Associated Press by the Center for Media and Democracy, a progressive watchdog group […]

A resurgent economy is seen as critical to boosting President Donald Trump’s reelection hopes and has become a growing focus of the White House coronavirus task force led by Vice President Mike Pence.

Tim Murtaugh, the Trump campaign communications director, confirmed to AP that an effort to recruit doctors to publicly support the president is underway, but declined to say when the initiative would be rolled out.

“Anybody who joins one of our coalitions is vetted,” Murtaugh said Monday. “And so quite obviously, all of our coalitions espouse policies and say things that are, of course, exactly simpatico with what the president believes. … The president has been outspoken about the fact that he wants to get the country back open as soon as possible.”

  10. I pretty much agree with what you posted here Mike.
My opinion on the virus is much the same as what it was at the start of all this.
The only differences the virus seems to have a lower mortality rate than originally thought.

  11. ahhh so because she’s a conservative fuck those cancer patients….. are the other 500 Drs also conservatives?

Are the Drs of the WHO who this week came out against lockdowns conservatives also?

Let go of your politics for 2 seconds for christ sake. Lockdowns have already killed more people than the virus.

  12. Patrick.

Lockdowns have already killed more people than the virus.

Patrick. You’ve got to learn to stop making claims like this without evidence.
It doesn’t strengthen your argument ,which by the way I partly agree with.
The increase cancer deaths alone, is going to be horrific.

  13. nah pahntom has been the most consistent on the covid

he notes the inconvenience, buttons up , wears a mask
and stays ahead of the corona moaners and corona groaners
    R < 1 , is the only approach – can't odds that , you just can't
the question the only question is how we get it down to less than 1
    everything else is bollocks

  14. sure Dave….. you don’t believe it so it can’t be true, screw those Drs Dave knows more than any of them…..

Anyone who isn’t a psychopath would take the news that lockdown deaths of despair are more than doubling COVID fatalities to mean cruelly inflicting isolation on people already struggling under the weight of depression and addiction was a horrific mistake that ought not be repeated. 15. Ahhh so because she’s a conservative fuck those cancer patient

No, she’s a conservative activist who penned a letter which supports a Trump administration campaign which has admitted they’re recruiting doctors ‘to prescribe reviving the U.S. economy as quickly as possible, without waiting to meet safety benchmarks proposed by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’

Are the other 500 Drs also conservatives?

Possibly, possibly not. I don’t know.

Are the Drs of the WHO who this week came out against lockdowns conservatives also?

They didn’t. One stated that the lockdown shouldn’t necessarily be the main means of limiting contagion:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/14/technology/trump-coronavirus-who-lockdown.html

Let go of your politics for 2 seconds for christ sake.

Maybe if you stop posting letters by political activists wearing their physician’s hat.

  16. Patrick Van Roy,

sure Dave….. you don’t believe it so it can’t be true, screw those Drs Dave knows more than any of them…..

So you’re starting off with the insults quickly here Patrick.
Let me explain my point simply. once again your claim was:

Lockdowns have already killed more people than the virus.

THAT CLAIM would mean OVER 1.1 million EXTRA people would have ALREADY died because of lock downs. Do you have evidence that this has happened?
Because neither of your links provide that evidence. (The first link doesn’t work.)

  17. Mike Cunningham,

    Well said.

  18. 2 assholes……

Everything is fine wear your masks, if mom dies of cancer, and Johnny commits suicide, while children lose a whole year of school etc etc fuck those people.

  19. 2 assholes……

I never throw the first punch…..

  20. Patrick

    2 assholes……

The usual response from you Patrick, the man who complains repeatedly about other people not being civil on ATW is the first to insult others.
I was actually mostly agreeing with what you were saying, but you’re such a petulant child, who can’t even take the tiniest bit of legitimate criticism.
Once again, you’ve made a claim that you can’t back up.

Everything is fine wear your masks, if mom dies of cancer, and Johnny commits suicide, while children lose a whole year of school etc etc fuck those people.

What the f*** has this got to do do with the point I was making? You’re just trying to deflect attention away from the fact that YET AGAIN, you’ve made yet another bullshit untrue claim.
As somebody whose cancer checkups have been suspended because of coronavirus, I think you’ve got a f****** nerve to accuse me of not caring about people not getting their cancer treatment and check ups.

  21. Patrick, Pete, etc

You have mocked and opposed mask wearing.

So it is you who are the true architects and masterminds of all the lockdowns. Not Johnson, not Cuomo, not Whitmer- you, and you, no one else.. Stand up and have your mug shots taken.

If you’ve been so entirely wrong to this point, maybe you want to be quiet going forward. Listen and learn from Taiwan and the other successful Asians.

  22. Indeed, a fair bit of what is said in this blog is sensible advice. Lockdowns are used as a scorched earth measure of last resort and it’s dismissal and mockery of preventative measures and seriousness of Covid which lead to them.

  23. Phantom,

    Patrick, Pete, etc

I hope you’re not including me in that etc.

  24. Dave

Not for a minute was I thinking of you

I think that the greatest hostility to masks here has come from Pat, Pete, David, and Alison.

They’ve repeatedly and loudly opposed one of the easiest to use and most effective steps against the spread of the virus.

If it weren’t for voices and attitudes like from these four, the lockdowns would have been shorter and the Re-openings would have been earlier and more robust.

  25. talking of buttholes I’m suprised Trump didn’t recommend the ancient Taoist practise of perineum sunning as a cure . I got a vision in my mind of a rally with the followers all decked out like this
    sorry couldn’t resist 😉

  26. Phantom.

I genuinely can’t understand why people object so much to wearing masks. It’s a minor inconvenience at worst for the majority of the population, and even if it only saves a few lives, and slows down the spread of the virus, then it’s worth it.
My issues are with the government lockdown measures. The advice seems to be contradictory and confusing. Plus the fact these lockdown measures are having a devistating effect on the economy, the NHS, and people’s mental health.
As Mike said I think we should be concentrating more on protecting the vulnerable.

  27. Yep

It’s not always easy to do in multi generational households, of which there are many here.

  28. the star of the show in terms of everyone I’ve been tuning into re: election, covid and all the issues is pete buttigieg , such a fine mind, its rare.
He has a great future and Biden team in office will do well with the guy whatever position he’s offered , and i hope he will be offered one, should Biden bring it home
A star is born .. great isn’t he phantom ?

  29. I accept that I wrote in favour of lockdowns, but that has proved to be incorrect. Time for a change!

Yes Mike, you and me both.

But the problem with “protecting the vulnerable and letting the rest of us get on with our lives” is that the vulnerable amount to at least 25% of the population and it’s difficult to imagine how such a high number can be effectively isolated, never mind for how long. Yes, some like old guys Lord Sumption will choose to take the risk and fair play to them, but what about the majority of them who will prefer to stay safe? That could be 20% which is over 12 million Brits. My mother in law is 87 and has been self-isolating since February.

  31. Patrick

Lockdowns have already killed more people than the virus.

Still waiting for you to verify this claim Patrick.
Shall we add it to to the long list of bullshit claims you’ve made and not provided evidence for, in the past.

  32. How many would have died without the lockdowns?

The cut and paste bloggers never talk about that

  33. Indeed Phantom.

But Patrick’s claim here is that more than 1.1 million extra people have already died so far, because of the lockdown. Where is the evidence for this?

  34. He made it up.

Or he heard it from some unknown person on some Aberdonian website that he saw for the first time the other day.

  35. Phantom.

Oh I know he made it up mate.
Just like he made up that John McCain was responsible for the USS forrestal fire, and that our planets atmosphere plays no part in controlling its climate. Along with a very long list of other made up Patrick ‘facts’ that he always fails to provide evidence for.
I don’t take part in many of the political discussions, but I’m guessing Patrick makes up quite a bit of stuff on those as well.

  36. But in fairness, he can holler and scream, which justifies all his theories in his head.

  37. Phantom,

But in fairness, he can holler and scream, which justifies all his theories in his head.

    Fact:
Something proven to be true with evidence to back up the claim.

    Patrick Fact:
Something true because Patrick asserts it to be true, without providing evidence.

  38. DaveA
I think our job is to keep them in their swamps away from the levers of power
if they want to yell all day and abuse , that’s what losers and clowns ;do
particularly those whose contact with reality becomes smaller and smaller each day as they reach for QAnon, Alex Jones, Hannity, shock-jocks for comfort

they’re near the events horizon of their own mental black holes, and there’s a fair few of them due to implode ..

A black hole is an astronomical object with a gravitational pull so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape it. A black hole’s “surface,” called its event horizon, defines the boundary where the velocity needed to escape exceeds the speed of light, which is the speed limit of the cosmos
