THE STORMING OF DEMOCRACY

The unbelievable scenes in Washington DC’s Capitol Building which have reverberated around the world are astonishing to watch in any democracy let alone that which styles itself as the model and exporter of democracy to other countries. Over here on the European continent I’ve seen it compared to the storming of the Ukraine parliament in 2014 and the Franco uprising against the Spanish Republic in 1936. Indeed, the BBC’s New York & Washington correspondent, Nick Bryant described it thus:

Were this a different country on a different continent, we would be talking of a failed state

What we have seen today in the wake of the assault on democracy is metaphorical hand washing on industrial levels. Yes, freedom of peaceful assembly is a Constitutional Right and perhaps those who stormed the Senate were in the minority of the protestors but remember how we were told that anyone who attended the Portland or various BLM protests were as complicit in violence as the minority of protestors who actually perpetrated the violence? Yeah, that. It’s good to see that this perspective has now changed but let’s be absolutely clear here, this was absolutely expected, and a less charitable person may suggest that this change of perspective of every protestor being complicit in the violence of the minority is now because the shoe is on the other foot.

In my opinion those who propagated this conspiratorial lie are all liable to blame of different levels in this, the lying lawyers, the cheating congressman, the drawling, conceited ‘I signed something’ patsies and those who radicalised and attempted to radicalize others by propagating the conspiracy theory amongst friends or on the internet. Let’s be clear here, there was no ‘steal’ There was an election and the guy who lost didn’t like it so decided to try to change it by whipping people up into a frenzy. Those here who are familiar with unionism in Ireland may know of the regular comments from loyalist prisoners of how Ian Paisley’s emotional rhetoric drove them to commit acts of violence only for respectable unionism to wash their hands of them – this is exactly the same.

Which brings me to the cause of the far right domestic terrorist anarchy, the current POTUS. Make no mistake, Trump’s to blame for this and because of his personal vanity and narcissism four people are dead, many people face long prison sentences and the image of the US is an image of both shocked silence and laughter in the eyes of the world. I’ve constantly said here that history wouldn’t be kind to Trump, that’s a given now. This assault on democracy will be Trump’s lasting legacy for time immemorial and I suspect that outside a microscopic circle of extremists the Trump brand will now be toxic in both politics and business.

If there is any justice in this world the instigator and initiator of what happened yesterday must surely ne looking at an orange jumpsuit.

On a final note, I’ve read many people state ‘this isn’t America’ which is part of the problem. This  IS America, however unpalatable it may be, and it needs to be fixed.

  1. Thank you.

  2. Whilst yesterday’s events should rightly be condemned and are totally unacceptable the faux outrage from some of those on the far left is staggering.
I don’t recall the same outrage when BLM and Antifa terrorists where rioting, burning and looting for weeks in Portland and many other US Cities.
4 people were killed? I wonder when the Officers involved will have their names dragged through the mud?

  3. Good post, a chara.

Whilst I can see how this may well end his political aspirations, I don’t know if it will have any serious effect on the Trump brand in business. His family can take care of that end of things, whereas the political side was literally his face and voice. As long as they keep him out on the golf course or possibly, behind bars, they can continue to run the business side of things, quite possibly with more success than he has had himself.

We have been accused of gloating on another thread. That’s true to a point, but is there anyone here who really sat and watched this shit show yesterday and didn’t feel the utmost shame and pity for good, decent Americans – Democrats, Republicans, whatever – who sat and watched this happen in their highest seat of power, despairing, knowing that this had all come about because of the person some of them had voted for?

I sat up very late last night, watching various news channels. On C-Span, one woman called in, in tears, asking if this was really the actions of her president. “I voted for you,” she cried, live on air. “I voted for you.” She didn’t deserve this. America didn’t deserve it, unless you believe in the maxim – we get the politicians we deserve.

There has been some talk of invoking the 25th Amendment and removing all power from him. Perhaps this is the best course of action, before anyone else gets hurt. Pence behaved as a VP should last night. Is it any wonder Trump no longer likes him?

  4. I don’t recall the same outrage when BLM and Antifa terrorists where rioting, burning and looting for weeks in Portland and many other US Cities

    ‘But whatabout…..?’

Well, apart from the ‘BLM & anteefa’ violence not being an attack on the actual fabric of democracy as the violent storming of the Senate was, I do, I recall it very well.

  5. I don’t recall the same outrage when BLM and Antifa terrorists where rioting, burning and looting for weeks in Portland and many other US Cities.

You must have been away in Poland or something at the time mate. ATW’s pages were crammed with posts loaded with that outrage.

I wonder when the Officers involved will have their names dragged through the mud?

If they acted unlawfully, I’m sure there will be a reaction. And the way the American press operates, it won’t be long before their names are made public.

    Faux outrage indeed.

  6. The Trump rioters = The Antifa rioters

Not a dime’s worth of difference between them.

They’re from the identical moral place – getting their way by illegal violence.

  7. I wish Seimi. I wish.
I had an extended trip planned for last March before the you know what hit the fan!

  8. Are looting and violence against buildings and police now equated in seriousness to attacking the symbol and processes of US democracy, no less initiated and spurred on by the POTUS himself?

    Interesting.

I don’t know if it will have any serious effect on the Trump brand in business. His family can take care of that end of things, whereas the political side was literally his face and voice.

I think that forever the Trump brand will invoke the images of chaos and anarchy yesterday.

    I’d say that’s a negative for investors.

  9. JM

My brother’s girlfriend is from Zamosc. She usually gets home once or twice a year, but hasn’t made it back since all this started. She’s climbing the walls.

  10. Quoting the hysterical bleatings from the failed state broadcaster BBC….. I thought this site would know better.

& then I see drivel comparing the mostly peaceful demonstrations at the Capitol yesterday to the ongoing outrageous performances of Antifa.. thats shameful.

  11. The Trump brand has been tarnished for a long time now

Wedding parties long ago stopped being booked for the hotels – many guests would refuse to attend.

His name was removed from NYC residential buildings at the request of the condo owners

    etc

  12. LMAO…….

  13. LMAO…….

I would have expected nothing less, Pat.

    Djaym, you’re fucking hilarious.

  14. On C-Span, one woman called in, in tears, asking if this was really the actions of her president. “I voted for you,” she cried, live on air. “I voted for you.” She didn’t deserve this. America didn’t deserve it

response to Troll’s predictable LMAO ….

    good one seimi
these are the stories we patch together that tell the narrative of our times

  15. …the mostly peaceful demonstrations at the Capitol yesterday…

which left four people mostly dead…

  16. ” Mostly peaceful ”

    I’ve heard that before!

  17. I knew you would appreciate that Paul 😉

  18. This is the video of the last moments of Ashli Babbit, (the woman who was shot in the Senate):

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ9oThRuMVs&has_verified=1&bpctr=1610040917&ab_channel=NationalFile

    Two things,

From what it shows on the video I can’t see anything that warrants the use of lethal force against her.

The helmeted assault rifled cops on the stairwell are remarkably restrained.

  19. & then I see drivel comparing the mostly peaceful demonstrations at the Capitol yesterday to the ongoing outrageous performances of Antifa.. thats shameful.

now I don’t know if that was said in jest or seriousness. If it was said seriously I want to point out.

I do not agree with this post at all, I don’t agree with most of what any of you have said in regard to this incident. Yet the post is here, all the comments are here, and no one is being stopped from airing their point of view……

I haven’t even stepped in to poke holes in anyone, and god that would be fun and simple.

I have said all I will on the incident yesterday. Unlike the rest of you I place in the list of outrages that have occurred over the past year and in that list it is by far no where near the worst.

That doesn’t excuse it, and I will continue to hold to my statement. The two people who got shot deserved to be shot.

but as you so often do, Condemn me and condemn THIS SITE look at this post, your comments and remember the freedom you have here.

  20. Let’s do some beautiful posts , evil is defeated
2 weeks to go . Heaven begins .
Pat yes you have posted this post .
    It’s laudable and noted .
Maybe can do mine if my punishment is up ?
Have I still got a few more weeks in the hole ?
    Kurt

  21. I haven’t even stepped in to poke holes in anyone, and god that would be fun and simple.

No, I don’t think you can.

I have said all I will on the incident yesterday

    See point one.

  22. In perspective, the violence yesterday wasn’t anywhere near among any top list of violent civic events in American history, but what made it so particularly shocking is the involvement of a current sitting American President who was the leading proselytiser of the atmosphere that was the conduit to the later events, a President who as of this moment has still not actually condemned the violence and indeed has praised the crowd who carried it out.

Who among Americans would have thought they would live to see the day when a mob of people would attack Congress while it was sitting, trash several offices and parts of the building , cause the elected representatives to have to be evacuated for their own safety and at the same time the current elected Head of State of your country could barely bring himself to even utter a negative remark about it.

  23. Yet the post is here, all the comments are here, and no one is being stopped from airing their point of view……

I haven’t even stepped in to poke holes in anyone, and god that would be fun and simple.

Whoop-dee-fucking-doo. How about you just condemn Trump for his part in yesterday’s shameful behaviour by people who think like you?
Or do you – as per usual – think Trump is above reproach?

You can attempt to ‘poke holes’ as much as you want, but you will lose, as you always lose.

  24. Whoop-dee-fucking-doo. How about you just condemn Trump for his part in yesterday’s shameful behaviour by people who think like you?

    Is that a rhetorical question?

He won’t because he can’t. Any time of violence, vandalism or looting in the BLM related protests in the Summer we had metaphorical reams of posts of hundreds of comments on the issue. Now that there has been, as widely expected and predicted, an actual violent attack of the democratic process, by Trump cultists it’s

I have said all I will on the incident yesterday

Remember how Biden was lambasted for allegedly not condemning the violence strongly enough? Not a fucking word about the POTUS refusal to condemn.

  25. It is his violence

He promised a wild time on a specific date and he delivered

  26. Good post Paul. Absolutely spot-on.

  27. The two people who got shot deserved to be shot.

Channeling your inner Sheila Fogerty I see

  28. It’s amusing how Djaym wants to speak about anything rather than the actual events in Washington yesterday.

  29. Suck it up snowflake

Criminal George Floyd killed by police while being restrained committing another crime. —> Worldwide orchestrated protests & outrage. Black Live Matter.(In an election year, anyway)

Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt deliberately shot and killed by police at point blank range. —> Near silence. White Lives Don’t Matter?

  30. As I said, anything rather than the actual events in Washington yesterday 🙂

Your guy lost and made the US a laughing stock because he can’t accept rejection:

    https://images.app.goo.gl/yZjyP2wgR17PbuJs8

  31. Djaym,

So was Charli Babbit NOT committing a crime? In my day, trespass and treason were against the law.

  32. It’s just been reported here that Melania is splitting from Trump?

  33. https://gothamist.com/news/trump-fur-ever-costumed-capitol-rioter-son-brooklyn-supreme-court-judge

Trump Fur-Ever: Costumed Capitol Rioter Is Son Of Brooklyn Supreme Court Judge

    Excellent patriot!

  34. I think that was one of Melania’s aides that quit her job

  35. https://nypost.com/2021/01/07/flight-attendants-union-wants-pro-trump-rioters-banned-from-flights/

The head of the country’s largest flight attendants union said people who took part in the riot at the Capitol must be banned from flying — after a passenger projected a “Trump 2020” image on a flight to Washington, DC, a day before the siege.

Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants, said in a statement that “some of the people who traveled in our planes (Tuesday) participated in the insurrection at the Capitol today.”

She said in a statement Wednesday that “their violent and seditious actions at the Capitol today create further concern about their departure from the DC area.

They hollered and screamed in mid-air.

    MAGA!!

  36. The poor, violent, seditious anti democrats are being persecuted.

I have to say, PVR’s disciplined silence in not attempting to defend the indefensible is admirable.

  37. I don’t normally watch such videos. The girl that was shot, was she getting close to where congress members were hiding? That’s the only reason I can think lethal force was used. No way could the mob have been allowed to get to them.

  38. I won’t watch that video.

    I can’t.

I actually feel sorry for the woman and for some of the other lost souls that breached the lines yesterday.

They’re lost, naive, gullible, misled. They followed those who intentionally led them to a place of great danger.

I feel great, cold anger for those who led her to such a place. Yesterday didn’t just happen. It was planned, and there is a trail of evidence that leads to all of it, in social media and in public, including to the White House and to public stages in Georgia, and nationwide.

  39. I don’t recall the same outrage when BLM and Antifa terrorists where rioting, burning and looting for weeks in Portland and many other US Cities.

That’s a fair point from JM. I get the NYT and the Atlantic online and I can confirm that both of them played down the outright BLM-Antifa thuggery that blighted several US cities after the murder of George Floyd. Also it’s true that Biden and the Democrates wanted to look the other way and this may well have cost them congressional seats in November.

But as Paul points out the BLM violence did not include an attack on the heart of government in Washington DC. That was instigated by Trump’s rabble-rousing speech yesterday but he had sowed the seeds for at least the past 12 months. And he has form in claiming fraud when he loses as Ted Cruz well knows. When he beat Trump at the Iowa caucus in 2016 Trump immediately claimd that “We won this election but Cruz stole it from us”. How ironic that Cruz and Hawley chose to jump on the Trump bandwagon at exactly the wrong time. Maybe there is a god after all.

  40. That’s a fair point from JM

I don’t think it is, I think it’s simple whataboutery but while we’re insisting on raising it, was the police response to violence at Capitol Hill on a par with its response to BLM related violence?

  41. I actually feel sorry for the woman and for some of the other lost souls that breached the lines yesterday.

Yes, the woman who died was a Q’Anon believer, as was the reindeer guy who appeared in a lot of photos. When the prosecutions get going it will be interesting to see how much Q’Anon was involved. Needless to add, the cult has been endorsed by Trump on several occasions in the past few months.

  42. http://www1.wbrz.com/news/us-capitol-police-officer-dies-after-riots-in-dc-wednesday

The MAGA rioters killed a cop it appears

Remember in past discussions here I asked a question when some said that guns were needed to fight supposed government tyranny

I asked repeatedly, who were the so-called patriots going to shoot . Never got an answer

I asked if they would shoot police or soldiers – Who the hell else would they shoot – never got an answer

I don’t know if the Trump rioters shot this cop or if they killed him by some other means but this has become much more serious

Trump and Giuliani asked for this

All predicted , Including on the pages of ATW. It actually could have been a whole lot worse

  43. was the police response to violence at Capitol Hill on a par with its response to BLM related violence?

That’s a fair question Paul. I watched video footage on BBC of a black policeman retreating in the face of an angry white mob just after they broke into the building. They did not appear to be armed and he didn’t draw his gun as he retreated up stairways until reinforcements arrived. But it’s probably pointless to speculate what would have happened if it had been an unarmed BLM mob confronted by a white policeman. You hope he would have shown the same forebearance.

  44. Phantom

I saw a snap opinion poll today which reports that 45% of GOP voters approve of the storming of the Capitol yesterday:

    https://www.thelondoneconomic.com/politics/poll-more-republican-voters-support-the-storming-of-the-us-capitol-than-oppose-it/07/01/

  45. We are now told that the police officer is on life-support but alive

A Trump rioter attacked him with a fire extinguisher

The MAGA people injured 50 police officers yesterday

Well that’s how you attack a “ tyranny “ right?

    https://nypost.com/2021/01/07/us-capitol-police-officer-dies-after-dc-riots/

  46. Kevin Greeson, 55, of Alabama Was one of the demonstrators who died of a medical emergency yesterday

He was a gun nut who had repeatedly called for street violence in the streets in support of Donald Trump

Condolences may be sent to his new residence at 666 Karma Street, Hell

    https://www.al.com/news/2021/01/alabama-man-1-of-4-people-who-died-during-washington-dc-chaos.html

  47. We are now told that the police officer is on life-support but alive

Reported now as the officer having died.

At the risk of being ‘Trolled’ for being insincere. This is absolutely outrageous. Whether it’s decided as direct or indirectly involved. The POTUS’s actions are the reason this person is dead. A person charged with defending Capitol Hill.

Let that sink in. Any other US president and this would be considered GUBU (google it 😀 ), but for the Donald nothing is out of bounds. ANYONE that voted of this clown to hold the highest office in the land should resolve never to vote again. Stupid is as stupid does.

  48. Message from the guy who died at the Capitol on Wednesday (from Phantom’s link at 1:45)

Let’s take this ****ing country BACK! Load your guns and take to the streets!

    Let’s give them – a war.
Democrats don’t have guns…we do… bring your stick. I’m bringing MY GUNS!

    Hell yes… Proud Boys!!!

Maybe Nancy Pelosi will get it and die!

Well, live by the sword …..

  49. Noel

those are four different messages, mixed together.
The reason I point that out is not only to correct you (which I don’t get the chance to do too often! 🙂 ) but also to show that this wasn’t just a ‘heat of the moment’, one-off message. These were posted at different times on different days, with plenty of time to ‘cool off’ in between.

    smcgiff

The GUBU reference is delightful! Mixing Irish and US politics together in the very worst way possible! 🙂

  50. Cheers, Seimi.

  51. one crazy wrote he was afraid ” they were going to meltdown his guns and turn that into birdbaths for queers” – though to be fair it might have been a parody
hard to tell though often with the crazies 😉

  52. Just seen a good one:

“Due to travel restrictions this year, the United States now has to organise coups at home”

  53. lol i saw that one
good sober analysis by the guardian here :

From Charlottesville to the Capitol: how rightwing impunity fueled the pro-Trump mob

    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/jan/07/capitol-mob-attack-rightwing-rallies-trump

It’s a political playbook based on one assumption: impunity. So far, there have been no consequences for most of the president’s supporters, no matter how illegal their actions, and no consequences for Trump himself.

  54. During commentary on his show, “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” the conservative host who has traditionally aligned himself with the sitting president said that Trump bore responsibility for the riots, but continued to aim criticism at Democrats and news outlets for labeling the events as “insurrection” and “domestic terrorism.

That seems to be the only card left for the Trumpers: dance on the pin-head and engage in semantics over the definitions of patriots, insurrectionists and domestic terrorists
