POLAND IS SO GREAT

By Pete Moore On January 15th, 2021

Polish government officials have denounced the deactivation of Donald Trump’s social media accounts, and said a draft law being readied in Poland will make it illegal for tech companies to take similar actions there.

“Algorithms or the owners of corporate giants should not decide which views are right and which are not,” wrote the prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, on Facebook earlier this week, without directly mentioning Trump. “There can be no consent to censorship” […]

Morawiecki indirectly compared social media companies taking decisions to remove accounts with Poland’s experience during the communist era.

Sebastian Kaleta, secretary of state at Poland’s Ministry of Justice, said Facebook’s decision to remove Trump’s account was hypocritical, politically motivated and “amounts to censorship”.

He said the draft law prepared by the justice ministry would make it illegal for social media companies to remove posts that did not break Polish law.

A law backed by hefty fines.

Poland has felt the lash of left wing authoritarianism, first in German and then in Russian. It does not intend to relive the experience. American accents were once broadcast into Eastern Europe over Radio Free Europe. The lightening-quick revolution in the US might one day see Polish accents broadcast back the other way.

  1. POLAND IS SO GREAT

The totty was top notch. (Well, until they hit 40 that is) 🙂

  2. There’s something refreshing in Pete Moore seeing the merit in Big State intervening regulating threatening and instructing the business of private internet companies.

  3. You’ve spotted that inconsistency then Colm,

  4. As easy as spotting an elephant in a dolls house 🙂

  5. They are not private companies in the classical sense. They are now, practically, extensions of the regulatory state and olihopolies at the least. When acting in concert, for example in destroying a billion-dollar company like Parler in a minute, they are monopolies.

  6. Pete loves Poland and Hungary because they both have right-wing nationalist governments. Their corruption is ok because it’s in a good cause. And the same goes for their authoritarianism.

  7. billion-dollar company like Parler in a minute,

If Parler was anything remotely that flushed, it wouldn’t have to worry about piggybacking on any other hosting service.

  8. They are not private companies in the classical sense.

    They are.

Some truth there. These companies do control the lions share of the social media market.

for example in destroying a billion-dollar company like Parler in a minute,

They didn’t destroy Parler. It could set up on a new server the same way and Gab and Infowars did when they were banned by their hosting companies. Whether is does or not, remains to be seen.

    they are monopolies.

They don’t fit the definition of a monopoly.

    Monopoly

    NOUN
The exclusive possession or control of the supply of or trade in a commodity or service.
a company or group having exclusive control over a commodity or service.
a commodity or service in the exclusive control of a company or group.

    Wrong thread maybe?

  10. How so Peter ?

  11. Parler is still new. It’s not realistic to expect a startup to also have it’s own web hosting.

Some of the biggest companies in the world, and the US government and European Space Agency use Amazon hosting, along with small fry Parler.

  12. Phantom,

Parler is still new. It’s not realistic to expect a startup to also have it’s own web hosting.

You’re wrong Phantom. Plenty of small companies do set up on their own hardware. When you’re small you don’t need vast amounts of equipment or infrastructure. Parler, was not small in userbase terms though.
However, that’s beside the point. Parler could set up an another host easily and were going down that route, but due to finances, seem to have changed their minds.

Slate has questioned Parler’s business model, writing that Parler’s plan to rely on advertising revenue “seems far from foolproof” given the 2020 advertising boycotts of Facebook by some large brands who objected to hateful content on the platform. NBC also questioned whether corporations would be interested in advertising alongside “controversial material” on Parler. Matze said in an interview on June 29, 2020 that the business was not profitable. As of November 2020, Parler had not added advertising to the platform, and had not received any known venture capital.

Phantom, My comment was in relation to Pete claiming it was a ‘Billion dollar company’

  14. I doubt that Parler is any billion dollar anything.

And even if they were, they’d presumably have loans to repay.

” We host chat rooms for extremists ” is not the best way to inspire confidence in the financial markets.

    Extremists buy stuff too. 😉

    Yes they do

  17. Extremists Lives Matter !

  18. Phantom,

    Yes they do

Call me a cynic, but I can’t help thinking Alex Jones is just in it to remove money from gullible people.

  19. Call me a cynic, but I can’t help thinking Alex Jones is just in it to remove money from gullible people.

Can he not be both, as in a far-right conspiracy-monger who actually believes most of the bullshit he spouts but is also seriously on the make? I mean just like Trump?

  20. I don’t know that Alex Jones is right wing at all

He’s a liar for the ages, But what is right wing about him?

  21. Can he not be both, as in a far-right conspiracy-monger who actually believes most of the bullshit he spouts but is also seriously on the make? I mean just like Trump?

This is just my personal opinion, but I don’t believe Alex Jones believes the nonsense he spouts. I think he’s a manipulative showman, who is playing to a particular crowd for his own financial gain.

    Phantom.

    Spot-on mate.

  22. Alex Jones could have been the next Rush Limbaugh, had he been able to rein himself in a bit more.

    He is smart and talented.

    At times he speaks truths.

But he is a liar for all the ages of man, as well as a monster.

Like Trump, he is in my opinion a cause of the anti democracy insurrection and the deaths and injuries that resulted from it.

The ignorant mob was enraged at false stories of a stolen election, and he was one of those telling the stories.

  23. Phantom. I can’t disagree with anything you said. I believe you’re spot-on.
Alex Jones is a much smarter man than many people give him credit for.
    He’s also a massive c***.

  24. Cheers, happy evening all.

  25. You too mate.
