Martin Luther King Jr Day

By Patrick Van Roy On January 18th, 2021

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”

As we celebrate the life of a man that struggled, marched, and died for the equality of all. He is rolling over in his grave at what his Dream has become.

“We must come to see that the end we seek is a society at peace with itself, a society that can live with its conscience.”

Instead we have moved in the opposite direction, The Covid stimulus Package that Biden has put together if you are a minority well you get help, if your white……. eh not so fast……

“Our priority will be Black, Latino, Asian, and Native American owned small businesses, women-owned businesses, and finally having equal access to resources needed to reopen and rebuild.” — President-elect Biden

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

We know have an Administration that is the exact opposite of that Dream. The only thing that matters is the color of your skin and if you IDENTIFY as a woman.

This will be only the first discriminatory action that they move in.

As I celebrate today of one of America’s greatest leaders, I weep for the death of his dream.

  1. Not a good start if he sticks with that policy. The priority should be based on individual business needs and financial suffering, nothing else.

  2. “I imagine you already know that I am much more socialistic in my economic theory than capitalistic… [Capitalism] started out with a noble and high motive… but like most human systems it fell victim to the very thing it was revolting against. So today, capitalism has out-lived its usefulness.” – Letter to Coretta Scott, July 18, 1952.

King was different than you think.

He was very socialist, for his entire adult life.

He made this point many times. This morning on MSNBC they replayed a clip of him in 1967 or so speaking in favor of “ redistribution of wealth “ in America, with his son ( today ) in the studio, agreeing with those comments

  3. lol…. yeah he was a commie……

  4. You would have called him a commie if he was around and speaking that way about economics today Patrick

  5. He is in writing as opposing capitalism…

    More than a few times…

He was an early and strong opponent of the Vietnam war…

  6. Phantom

What do you think of the substance of the post about the claimed category priorities for Covid relief funds by the Biden administration ?

  7. I think given Troll’s support for the Trump presidency (who has regularly courted the far-right, white supremacists etc…) and his complete opposition to anything that actually levels the playing field, not to mention his borderline racist attitudes that any issues faced by black people are because of their own personal characteristics, it is pretty safe to say that Troll would have completely opposed Martin Luther King, and his use and abuse of him in this post is scandalous.

Firstly Troll is being dishonest when he says “The Covid stimulus Package that Biden has put together if you are a minority well you get help, if your white……. eh not so fast……”. There is nothing in Biden’s speech that said that if you were white that you won’t get support. So Troll is lying there (quelle surprise). What Biden said is that minority owned businesses will be prioritised in recovery. Minority owned businesses have been hit far harder by COVID-19, statistically, than white owned businesses. A study (in the summer so I’d like to see up to date numbers) suggested that black owned businesses were over twice as likely to be closed by COVID-19 than white businesses. Minority owned businesses are more likely to be customer facing, more likely to be personal services, more likely to be economically insecure and are less likely to get access to traditional financing. Like most other black people, black business owners are held back by a system that has never accounted for the impact of slavery.

They were also less likely than white businesses to recieve support from the Trump administration (something Troll never complained about). Minorities made up 20% of all small business owners in the United States but only 12% of those who received assistance under the Paycheck Protection Program. Because, deliberately or otherwise, the system was set up in a manner that makes it less likely that a black owned business could apply. As I said above black businesses struggle with access to finance. Many don’t have a relationship with a bank. And that was one of the criteria to access the Paycheck Protection Program.

If Biden gives more to blacks than whites Troll calls that racist. And when Trump gives more to whites than blacks Troll shuts the hell up. Why is that?

Ultimately Martin Luther King’s entire focus was on equality and ending the legacy of slavery. Troll wants to maintain the legacy of slavery because he opposes all actions to address it.

  8. I don’t support emphasizing business aid targeted by ethnicity or sex.

    For a hundred reasons

It magnifies the divisions in society

An acquaintance was Italian American, married a white Cuban. Cubans in the US are not disadvantaged in any way, they have always been successful. But the daughter was eligible for targeted “ Latino minority “ student aid. The jerk used to brag about participating in this.

Women owned business is a marvelous scam in this context. If a small business is owned by a married couple ( many are, many have always been like that ) you put the business in the name of the wife, and Bada Bing you are “ women owned business “ and are eligible for targeted aid.

  9. Strong arguments Seamus and where evidence shows disproportionate impact, policies to remedy that are justifiable, but if that quote of Joe Biden’s in Patrick’s post is accurate and not taken out of context, I still think it is wrong. Listing effectively every category that isn’t white and male as a priority is too loose a broad brush approach , creates a sense of hostility towards all ‘white male’ owned businesses regardless of personal suffering by individuals and I think th criteria should be refined to demonstrate and explain policy decisions based on real need and real injustice and not a divisive ‘tick box’ of appropriate skin colours and gender.

  10. BTW – Yes I know every post on Biden’s policies by Patrick will have to be taken with a pinch of salt as Patrick will undeniable come at them with an automatic verbal machine gun rather that an open listening ear, but it would be equally wrong to take a stance of automatically supporting and defending everything this Administration does here on ATW or says as ‘counter balance’ to the inevitable flood of anti-Biden posts we are going to see from Patrick Pete and Mike !

  11. I think policy decisions should be based on real need. I also know from experience that government designed systems, certainly during the COVID-19 crisis, that try to design criteria to meet ‘need’ tend to be restrictive and exclude a lot of businesses that were in need.

Take, for example, in the UK the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme grant. It was believed that if you made over £50,000 then you don’t need it (even if every penny of that £50,000 is wiped out by COVID-19). So a self-employed person on £30,000 (so normally £2,500 a month) who has lost a third of their business will get £2,500 from the government a month, on top of their £1,650 that they earned. Another self-employed person on £50,000 who has their entire income wiped out gets nothing.

Company directors aren’t eligible for SEISS either because they can take a salary through PAYE. But most directors take a very minimal salary (just enough to get their stamps) and then pay themselves through dividends. So they get no support from the government (as they can’t recover their lost dividends through the SEISS scheme).

Now this was the government trying to address who would need and who wouldn’t need. And they fucked it up. And pretty much most of the needs based systems designed during COVID-19 have fucked it up.

So I don’t think it should necessarily target minority owned businesses. But ultimately the experience of the last year has shown that broad brush works better than targeted. And if they determine that minority business have been hit harder by COVID-19 than white businesses then broad brush is more likely to reach more of those businesses than targeted schemes will.

  12. Yes, Patrick’n’Pete ™ will be entirely close-minded to any positive attributes or policies of Biden as they were to those of ” the dictator ” Obama, as they have been intentionally unseeing to the grand canyon sized moral catastrophe that has been Trump and Trumpism.

  13. Seamus

2 wrongs don’t make a right and its lazy to adopt a policy that because some forms of targeting have failed then you abandon that approach in favour of a broad brush one (unless that broad brush covers everyone which would be ridiculously expensive and wasteful). Its not beyond the wit of govt. surely to iron out the inconsistencies such as the ones you mention above without adopting criteria that can create alternative but equally wrong injustices such as a more financially secure black business owner getting a higher level of state aid than a demonstrably more impacted white owner purely because his race gives him more ‘points’.

  14. “Its not beyond the wit of govt. surely to iron out the inconsistencies such as the ones you mention above without adopting criteria that can create alternative but equally wrong injustices such as a more financially secure black business owner getting a higher level of state aid than a demonstrably more impacted white owner purely because his race gives him more ‘points’.”

And yet by their choosing of criteria is exactly what is already happening, just in the other direction. By using criteria that are more likely to be fulfilled by white businesses than minority businesses the Trump administration have de facto designed a scheme that gives priority to white businesses.

Ultimately if all that the “priority” to minority businesses means that all they need to do is have a minority owner and they get access then that would be wrong.

My personal reading of it is that they will redesign the criteria to make it more open to minority businesses by removing the criteria that are more likely to be met by white businesses but not black businesses.

  15. I disagree with you about the Company Directors Seamus. Yes its true that many of them claim minimal salaries and then top up their income through dividends and ‘Directors reserves’ and other forms of company expenditure as its much more tax efficient for them to do it that way and they can and do end up paying much less proportion of their income in direct taxes than full time fully taxed much lower paid salaried staff. They can hardly abandon that low tax advantage they adopt in ‘good times’ and demand to be treated to the same amount of tax funded State support as the ‘ordinary staff’ in ‘bad times’

  16. My personal reading of it is that they will redesign the criteria to make it more open to minority businesses by removing the criteria that are more likely to be met by white businesses but not black businesses.

Well Seamus, if that’s the intention and its how it operates in practice I would have no problem with that.

  17. “They can hardly abandon that low tax advantage they adopt in ‘good times’ and demand to be treated to the same amount of tax funded State support as the ‘ordinary staff’ in ‘bad times’”

They can when the government is the one telling them to shut. They want to make a living and the government say they can’t. It is only fair however when the government prevent someone from making a living that they replace the lost income.

And by all means close the loophole in the tax system. But for the government to keep the loophole in place and then use it as an excuse to put people on the breadline is scandalous.

  18. The govt. should pay them the same proportion of what they claimed as their salary as they do for all other salaried staff.

  19. “The govt. should pay them the same proportion of what they claimed as their salary as they do for all other salaried staff.”

Which is a tiny amount of their income. Their income is being denied to them by government diktat (correct as they may be). It is only fair in those circumstances to replace their lost income.

  20. I’m not closed minded about anything just the opposite.

Biden’s Policy Decisions will be evaluated for what they are and what they will achieve unlike your view of any of the Trump policies, and he will be held account for them as his unlike you with the Obama Administration.

The Biden/Harris Administration combined with the Schumer/Pelosi Congress is the Communist Conquest of the United States.

I won’t have to look for things to attack they will be presented daily by this group of Bolsheviks.

  21. It is only fair in those circumstances to replace their lost income.

It is not at all fair. They don’t have to take a tiny salary. They are not forced into it. They choose it. They can pay themselves a realistic salary and pay the same proportion of tax as other staff who genuinely have no choice. If a company director claims his salary is £30,000 a year, pays income tax and N.I on that, but then takes additional income of £200,000 taxed much lower are you really saying the govt. should reimburse them the full £230,000 a year ? The furlough scheme has an upper cash limit. It pays 80% of anyone’s salary up to I think its £2,500 a month. We can argue about what the limit should be . I think that policy should apply to all who cannot work regardless of what their salary or income was.

  22. and Phantom I totally expect then that you will write a counterpost to every negative post Pete and I write, explaining why we are wrong.

I am sure we shall many of these posts by you.

  23. I’m not closed minded about anything just the opposite.

The Biden/Harris Administration combined with the Schumer/Pelosi Congress is the Communist Conquest of the United States.

Ha Ha Ha. Brilliant Patrick 🙂

  24. They are both undisputable facts…… the truth hurts.

  25. If I corrected every error made by Pat’n’Pete, I’d have no time to do anything else.

  26. Pat’n’Pete – The Conservative Ben n Jerry, but with only one ice cream flavour on offer “The Trump” – sour grapes with an orangey bitter aftertaste” 🙂

  27. Trump is gone….. there is only one flavor Crunchy Constitutionalism… an ice-cream you can chew on.

If I corrected every error made by Pat’n’Pete, I’d have no time to do anything else.

the remark of a man out of ammo….

  28. You accusing Phantom of firing blanks ? .. now that’s below the belt 🙂

  29. You guys elected Joe Biden, by your choice of corrupt bumbling anti Constitutional traitor as your candidate.

You should at least give Biden a chance.

As we speak, Trump is spending his last days by selling pardons. Oh yes he is.

  30. nah nah…. Biden is on you……. As we speak, Trump is spending his last days by selling pardons. so he’s following the Bill Clinton model of Pardons…..

You accusing Phantom of firing blanks ? .. now that’s below the belt 🙂

    that’s funny

  31. Drain the swamp by selling pardons! ( a policy that Patrick and Pete will agree with, since Clinton did the same thing )

Let’s see if he pardons himself and his own crime family.

  32. ” If a company director claims his salary is £30,000 a year, pays income tax and N.I on that, but then takes additional income of £200,000 taxed much lower are you really saying the govt. should reimburse them the full £230,000 a year ? So put a limit on it. Of course the government shouldn’t reimburse the full £230,000 a year, in the same way they don’t pay the salary of a worker on furlough who would normally be paid £230,000. The limit is £2,500 a month. So cap it at that. All self-employed income, where through normal self-employment, or through PAYE & dividends, should be reimbursed at 80% up to a cap of £2,500 a month.

  33. After four years of pretending that The Donald (peace be upon him) can do no wrong Troll has now reverted to anything the government does is communism. Largely because Troll has no idea what communism is.

  34. Patrick wrote many diatribes against Obama for following the GWB negotiated Status of Forces agreement reducing US troop levels in Iraq.

But now Trump has reduced troop levels in Iraq and Afghanistan much further still, and Patrick is entirely in favor of that.

    There is zero consistency.

Trump could impose communism in the US, and Patrick would say that this is exactly what the founders intended.

  35. Yes we have reached agreement Seamus !

  36. Largely because Troll has no idea what communism is.

    Yep.

    [Phantom]
King was different than you think.

    lol…. yeah he was a commie……

    I rest your case.

Troll — I asked you a genuine question. I come in peace, really! I’m genuinely interested in what you make of his consistent calls for wealth and power redistribution, and his constant critiques of capitalism. Your love of him is positive, but there’s an incongruity: you’re against wealth redistribution (your comments on Obama Care) which makes you King’s opposite number on a very key philosophical and political point.

  38. It does seem funny that Patrick has to be an all or nothing person about political individuals instead of adopting the ‘curates egg’ approach (not sure if that saying is used in the States).

You can admire MLK Jr for his iconic role, charisma and personality in the history of struggle for racial equality while also rejecting his clearly economic socialist tendencies Patrick if you wish. One doesn’t diminish the other.

  39. ” Curates egg ” term unknown here.

It’s in the same box as ” twee “!

Patrick wrote many diatribes against Obama for following the GWB negotiated Status of Forces agreement reducing US troop levels in Iraq.

He followed nothing, Obama’s F’ups were his own but you couldn’t find it in you to hold him accountable.

But now Trump has reduced troop levels in Iraq and Afghanistan much further still, and Patrick is entirely in favor of that.

The war was over in those two countries Obama lost them. Trump cleaned up the mess Obama and McCain left behind arming al-qaeda in Syria while Obama funded terror by infusing Iran with cash which I’m sure Biden will follow suit.

  41. Trump could impose communism in the US, and Patrick would say that this is exactly what the founders intended.

Trump is gone….. free yourself from the grip of your addiction and fear… big bad orange man gone now,,,,,

  42. You have to admit its only fair to help women and minorities since trumps version of stimulus went almost exclusively to rich white guys, they have had their turn at the trough

  43. Phantom

You might as well give up expecting Patrick to concede anything Trump did as being wrong, even when it was identical to Obama.

Obama withdraws Troops – “Act of surrender”
Trump withdraws Troop – “Proof of success”

Biden withdraws troops – “Act of surrender”
Trump withdraws troops in 2024 (Patrick’s dream comes true, go with it ) – “Proof of success”

The narrative never be any different 🙂

  44. If you can’t tell the difference in the execution of each presidents own policies I can’t help you there Colm, but to say Obama and Trump handled the ME the same is just laughable.

  45. You condemned Obama for doing the same thing that you praised Trump for.

Even worse – since Trump has effectively surrendered Afghanistan to the Taliban, after betraying our allies the Kurds.

Obama never sold out allies like that.

This is why we call the Trump movement a Cult. Anything he does, you guys call an act of genius. Anything that others do, you condemn.

You haven’t thought any of this out.

  46. Obama sold out every allies we had in the ME he set them all up to be conquered by Iran and he gave birth to the first declared Islamic Caliphate in 1000 years while he poured more and more arms into the region while ordering our troops not to shoot…. you are delusional.

  47. Besides whine, piss, moan….. do whatever fits your fancy. Bush is Gone, Obama is Gone, Trump is Gone. Right now the ME for the ME is relatively quiet.

Let’s see what happens under Biden’s foreign Policy.

  48. I’m very interested in how they are going to act toward the Jews.

  49. Patrick

American troops can’t be there for ever. Obama reducing the numbers was a good thing. Trump reducing the numbers is a good thing. I have no problem praising both of them. You will never do that. You don’t base your decisions on the actions but simply on who is doing them.

  50. “he gave birth to the first declared Islamic Caliphate in 1000 years”

Well that’s a pretty stupid thing to say. Troll’s hated for the “black dictator” along with a lack of knowledge of the Middle East combined in a stunning act of stupidity.

Both the Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Hejaz were declared Caliphates. So a tad more recent than 1,000 years.

  51. bull I base them on how they are done. The execution of the act.

Obama surrendered and put our troops in harms way with his rules of engagement. Trump did a scorched earth policy in the hot zones then pulled out, and removed our troops everywhere else, he didn’t leave them standing there with no bullets.

  52. standing there with no bullets

    Trumper old wives tale

  53. tell it to the dead……

  54. Every so often, you read another interesting detail on King.

In 1956, his house was bombed, when Coretta Scott King and member of the church were in the home.

Rev King rushed to the scene, saw that his wife was OK, and addressed the angry neighbors

“We believe in law and order,” King said. “Don’t get your weapons. He who lives by the sword will perish by the sword. Remember that is what God said. We are not advocating violence. We want to love our enemies. … Love them and let them know you love them.”

“I want it to be known the length and breadth of this land that if I am stopped, this movement will not stop. If I am stopped, our work will not stop. For what we are doing is right. What we are doing is just. And God is with us.”

He had the moral discipline to counsel nonviolence even under those circumstances.

The black and white men of violence, including the cops, didn’t know what to do with him.

  55. The Greatest (Forgotten) Game Ever Played: MLB’s 1970 Exhibition to Honor MLK
More than 20 Hall of Famers suited up at Dodger Stadium on March 28, 1970 to honor the memory and support the causes of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Some here may be interested in this story which I also just learned of.

Donn Clendenon was a personal friend of King? Remarkable.
