1.- Nazi Germany held people in camps for being racially Jewish something they had no control over. It was a prelude to exterminating them
2- Modern Germany is trying to prevent people infecting others with a potentially deadly highly contagious virus. It is trying to save lives not take them. It requires people with the virus or those at risk of having it to self isolate. Only those who CHOOSE repeatedly to break essential public health measures are at risk of having to complete their isolation in these camps. It is very easy for any individual to avoid having to spend any time in these camps.
3. If these camps were being used to continue holding indefinitely foreign (mainly Muslim) asylum seekers, I wonder if we would still this alarmist ‘Nazi history repeating itself’ post ?

This is all so much drivel, it’s hard to know where to start.
First: Germany is not “building camps” for the alleged purpose, as the header here says. That’s a lie.
Second: No such measure is, or can be, “according to plans drawn up by the German government”, as David claims. Public health, and thus the Covid response, in Germany is a matter for the individual states, not the German government.
Third: The measure most likely being referred to here (naturally in the rag quoted no sources are given) is that Covid-infected people who continue to refuse to quarantine and are caught outside interacting with others, can be arrested and held in detention centres. Not the simple citizen innocently going about his business, as is stated here.
The mentioning of segregated parts of hospitals as a place to house these law-breakers should have been a hint to anyone with a bit of sense that we’re talking about those tested positive for Covid.
Another possible basis for the nonsense is that certain refugee centres (there are no “camps”) are put under complete lockdown when a certain critical rate of infections in the centre has been reached.
But I’m sure David and those of like mindlessness would cheer that on.
Dave’s reference to the concentration camps in which British Authorities interned Dutch families during the Boer War is important. Incredible to think that 26,000 women and children died in these camps.

Biden administration is preparing to address the pandemic in a far more organized way than the expiring administration has.
The feds will be much more involved in ensuring that there are enough injection sites, enough people to staff them, enough vaccine being produced.
A lot of this could have been done six months ago, but wasn’t. The unsexy but necessary nuts and bolts preparation work was ignored, or delegated entirely to states that themselves have often done poorly
The Trump administration has been poor, begrudging at sharing information with the new team, which hurts the process.
But let there be no doubt – there will be a real change of attitude and performance on Covid, effective this week.

Exactly. The German govt deserves much criticism for its handling of the pandemic, or especially the vaccines, which some have commented on here. I think this mistake will soon become very clear, especially compared to the UK after the much faster action by the British govt starts to take effect.
The same goes for many other continental countries. A lot of criticism is warranted.
But I suppose it better grabs the attention of simple minds if you put up pictures of Auschwitz.
Another area where I think all European countries have failed is their laxness on controlling International travel. As far as I am aware no restrictions were placed throughout last year on Europeans wanting to have their foreign holidays and millions of them (including Brits and the Irish) still had their Meditteranenan and even further summer sizzler tan top ups. All that did was ensure such mass movements of people would keep the virus circulating and expanding everywhere. There may have been some economic justification for such laxness but it was a false and counterproductive policy. I much prefer the NZ/Australian approach where they took a ‘put out the fire now’ attitude to Covid rather than ‘manage the flames’ as we did. they virtually halted all travel in and out of their countries and look where they both are now, effectively fully opened up and back to normal internally.
But by the time the Europeans properly realized what was going on, the virus probably was all over the various countries.
There is of course enormous travel every day between Italy ( where it arose first in Europe ) and every other country in Europe.
I am not sure that flat out travel bans within Europe would have helped much.
Australia / NZ have the incredible geographic advantage of distance that the UK and Germany etc didn’t have.

I agree it might have been more difficult throughout the continent especially with the Open shengen land borders but certainly the ridiculously lax lack of air travel restrictions helped at least fuel some virus spreading that could have been avoided.
It certainly helped, but it can’t have been a really significant factor. The big surge in Europe, everywhere in Europe, started in October when there wasn’t much travel.
Hard to prove, but I believe that people let their guard down, and that a pernicious segment in the populations had never taken it very seriously in the first place.
We should have used the summer months to drive further down to try and achieve ‘zero Covid’ as best we could when it would have been easier to do so but instead we allowed the low numbers to relax our guard and even to encourage people back to communal workspaces and hospitality gatherings . That meant there was still a communal level of infection bubbling into Autumn to fuel the winter exponential rises. A stronger effort in late summer /early Autumn might have prevented the Europe back on lockdown we are now experiencing through the first quarter of this new year.
I hope very much that we can break the back of this thing in all our countries over the next few months, as the weather gets warmer and more get the vaccine.
Here in the NYC area, the number of new cases is moving significantly downward day by day again, hopefully for good.
It’s a virus, like a germ or a bacteria there really isn’t much you can do.

New Zealand has had 25 deaths in total. Australia less than 1,000. They have done hugely better than our 2 countries and are virtually back to normal. There is a lot that can be done better than we did.

Whilst I appreciate that this was an exceptional situation for governments of the world to handle, and not one which theyve had any real experience dealing with before, a hell of a lot of mistakes were made. Some honest, some idiotic, some deliberate. Such as having a president who openly dismisses the wearing of masks and the severity of this virus.

Shutting their borders didn’t do it. Having strict and enforced contact tracing and isolation policies didn’t do it. Being relatively healthy didn’t do it. Having adequate levels of vitamin D3 and zinc didn’t do it. Their immune systems being exposed to very similar viruses in the recent past didn’t do it.

And since they’re the ones that have been successful, maybe we listen to them instead of arguing all the time.

To be fair this is an extremely complicated situation. And there were numerous factors other than wearing masks which of contributed to the differences between covid infections and deaths in various countries.
Pete does make a good point here. A comprehensive decisive well rounded series of different high level professional approaches is what does the trick. You do seem to have quite a fixation on mask wearing as the ‘magic bullet’ Phantom. They are useful and I absolutely agree they should be enforced in shared public spaces but they are not the No 1 preventer of infection.

A few weeks ago I had a flu jab early on a Saturday morning. It was sub-zero, very frosty and icy. I put the chin hammock on as I walked across the car park to the clinic, where a lovely young nurse with a gorgeous arse would do the deed.
I immediately noticed how my breath was billowing out through the mask, which I do know how to fit properly, as if I wasn’t wearing one. I breathed a few more times while stood still, in rapt admiration at the patterns the early morning sunshine was making through the vapour.
And I chuckled at how dumb you have to be to think that these things make the slightest difference.
By the way, UK compliance with mask wearing is very high. Levels of vitamin D3 and zinc not so much at this time of year. That’s a hint. Look elsewhere.

The Virus is tiny, but it cannot travel outside of a drop. The virus is carried in droplets in aerosol form or on surfaces. These droplets, (well still small comparatively), are much bigger than the virus, and a percentage of them are trapped by the wearing of face masks.

You are not expected to wear masks in the company of your family, those you normally live with. But in the company of any guest it is a really really good idea to do so.
Allowing anyone non-resident in your own home for a social visit is not permitted at the moment in the UK. People breaking those regulations aren’t going to be bothered about wearing a mask.

I read that the gardai were stopping cyclists who were 5km from their homes because it was out of radius for this time. We have none of that.
The cases aren’t going to fall. They may go up and down but the virus shows no sign of fading and has started to mutate. Mutating can be a good thing, but no luck there so far.
Get sick, or get the vaccine those are actually your two best defenses.
Those of us with no immune system understand that it’s a matter of when and how bad, not If… and what I have to live in bubble with a fantasy that I’m safe.

Cases in London specifically and the UK in general are starting to fall , but from a high level. We still have bad death rates but numbers testing positive are falling about 20-25% a week. There is no limit on how far you can go to exercise walk or cycle but there have been incidents of people being stopped if they travel too many miles somewhere by car.
NYC new cases have gone down eight days in a row. Still high, but the decline is very promising.
Hospitalizations have not declined but that is a lagging indicator, hopefully they start to fall soon.
I believe that El Paso cases have significantly declined since early December but that they’re trending back up now.
