Because Friday night is Music Night!

You know, the chicks often ask me how I always look so hot. Well a gent never lies to a babe, so I always answer the same way. I say “Darling, this is Isley style … the fat one.”

Because Friday night is Music Night …

Woahhh – come back boys and girls. I know what you’re thinking: “Billy Ocean? What’s the man with the greatest new-fangled iPod thingy under than Sun doing playing him? What’s Pete Moore thinking of? Is this some turgid, Eighties, Caribbean Queen type of pap?”

I don’t blame you. That was a low point in the the worst decade music’s ever known, but it was such a big hit that I suppose most people now know him for that terrible three minutes. Billy Ocean did much, much better than that though, as this quality little number shows. You’re welcome –

Because Friday night’s Music Night.

I see from the post times that ATW hasn’t been refreshed for most of the day. Clearly the capitalists among us have been busy doing what capitalists do best: giving people what they want at prices they’re willing to pay. Or, in other words, doing real public service.

I know, no apologies needed, but let’s make up for it with a sparkler from Neil Diamond in any case –

Because Friday night is Music Night …

The 1st November means we’re a day late to be playing a recommendation by ATW regular Noel Cunningham. Ah well, next October will roll round soon enough. We’ll go for this completely random one instead then. It’s new to me but I like the images in the video of these old islands of ours. Men-an-tol is ‘the holed stone’ a 4500-year-old monument in Cornwall which you’ll see first if you press play. Legend has it that children will be cured of illness if they’re passed through the hole three times and dragged across the grass. Well it’s gotta be better than stuffing them with Ritalin.

It’s just the kind of thing which revs me up (the things the ancients left us, I mean, not throwing children around). My first proper weekend in weeks means I’ll be out on the high downs here in the great and ancient kingdom of Wessex, taking in an Iron Age hill fort, a Roman road and Saxon villages on the way. The weather forecast is for wet and windy, so good walking weather then and all the more reason to get to that log fire in the pub at the end of it. Have fun, whatever you’re up to.

Because Friday night is Music Night: it’s all about the riff …

Because Friday night is Music Night.

A gentle, bittersweet number this week. I’m sure you’ll agree that there hasn’t been anything like enough Judas Priest on the jukebox, an omission easily rectified. So we’ll go for what’s become a staple of their live act. I say a gentle, but it’s not really, not with Glenn Tipton and KK Downing ripping it up –

No, here is the gentle version, the original of the song which was written and performed by Joan Baez.

Because Friday night is Music Night.

The occasional feeling I get that the planet is moving in a different direction from me came back again today. It happened when I saw a Telegraph piece on the question: is the band ‘One Direction’ bigger than The Beatles? To which I thought, who the what is ‘One Direction’? I’ve never heard of’em, but apparently they’re enormous. I must be even further removed from pop culture than I thought. Never mind, I can live with that.

I’ll have to take solace in liking music by bald men with large beards who wield flutes. I bet One Direction can’t write tunes like this –

Because Friday night is Music Elvis Night.

Thanks to ATW regular Henry94 below, we remember that on this day in 1977 Elvis Presley checked out, left the building and departed for good. So let’s have a double bubble for the great man. Now I’m not so into the 1950s Rock n Roll stuff to be honest. Elvis for me is is the full-flare, high-collar, sequined dazzler of the 70s. Probably with a triple cheeseburger in the dressing room after the show. So here’s a couple I dig, hot off the new-fangled iPod thingy.

As usual, post your own links, anything you like, anything you’d recommend.

Because Friday night is Music Night …

I can’t remember any Roxy Music being posted here before, so we’d better rectify that oversight. Dunno what to choose, so let’s go for some early, classic stuff. If you thought Cliff’s get up was loud, check this out. As usual, feel free to link in the comments to anything you’ve been listening to, or which you’d recommend to others.

Because Friday night is Music Night …

I’ve never cared much for song lyrics. For me, music is all about the sounds; the riff, the groove, the beat, how that package makes you feel. What the singer’s going on about has never been of much interest unless the lyrics are particularly clever, but even then it’s the music which would have brought me to them.

Just as well then, otherwise I might not care for this old Misfits gem. Glenn Danzig put together a punk band with horror themes which seemed to enjoy (gasp!) a bit of a shock. Well they’re just words on a page. Don’t listen if you’re easily offended, or just ignore the shouty bits. Otherwise, click the play button for some pretty groovy sounds which go surprisingly well with the video –
