“Run and Use Violence”

By ATWadmin On August 4th, 2007 at 10:04 am

Perry at samizdata comments on the proposal to take and store DNA from people accused of the most trivial offences. I agree with every word copy it all here:

The impulse to control everything pervades those who make up the governmental class. That is, after all, why someone decides to spend their working life in politics and applying the collective means of coercion to others. The extent to which this desire to impose force backed control can be realised is exactly what defines whether or not you are ‘free’ or a ‘slave’ of the state.

So when yesterday I read that the state plans to take DNA samples that will be retained forever, from people accused of speeding or littering or failing to wear a seatbelt, I realised that if this happens, we will have finally reached the point where the only response left to being stopped for even the most minor offence, is to run and if need be to use violence to escape, and to make no apology for that if you are caught. The offences are trivial but the prospect of being DNA sampled upon being accused of a trivial offence, and that being kept on record forever, is something worth getting violent about. Being fingerprinted is bad enough but this is intolerable.

The only thing that will stop this appalling state of affairs from coming to pass is if enough people react with outrage to this proposal. The sooner my affairs contrive to let me get out of this godforsaken country the better.

I gamble once a year when along with the rest of my family I put a bet on the outcome of the Grand National horse race. That’s it from me – I don’t engage in any other form of betting as I have no interest in it. But clearly many other Britons do like to gamble, and it seems to me that the Government, via the National Lottery, has been encouraging people to waste their money in this way. I am struck by the number of people – many from what one could call less well off socio-demographic groups, who buy their lottery tickets along with their morning paper. And they seem to spend a large amount on this daily bet – which I wonder how they can afford. I don’t agree with the idea of GOVERNMENT promoting such a national addiction to gambling, but then again, since the government cream off a % I suppose Ministers see it very differently.

I did chuckle at this story over on Alphecca..

"In England, where only the criminals have handguns, the government is considering an exemption for the nation’s Olympic target shooters until after the London Olympics are over. Up to fifty professional athlete shooters would be allowed to practice their sport in England though of course the pistols have to stay locked up at the range and there are armed police standing by all during practice in case the athletes suddenly aim at something other than the bull’s eye."

The big question is what do the anti-gun campaigners think about this? Check out the link!

I see that Hollywood stars just love Britain. Well, British courts more specifically. Figures released by Sweet & Maxwell’s legal information service show that 19 libel cases involving celebrities versus newspapers came to court in Britain in the year to May 2007 – three times the number two years ago. The figures also show a dramatic increase in the number of libel claims relating to alleged terrorist offences. Experts attribute the rise in part to so-called "forum-shopping", where foreign celebrities choose to sue in the UK rather than in their own country, where libel laws are less favourable. Or to put it another way, British courts are enthusiastic to embrace the libel suits that the Hollywoodenheads just love to bring, but which would be thrown out by US courts. In 21st century litigation crazy Britain, we love libel.

kick ‘im out, the brute!

The Armed forces of Her Majesty deserve and receive all our support. That statement, without exception and of course, excluding the jihadis, IRA-supporting morons and left-wing ideologues who despise all State killers (their words, not mine) was prevalent throughout this country for many years. British Army, Navy and Air Force personnel carried out the lawful instructions given them by the civilian authority, and in return received the somewhat grudging thanks of a population who really didn’t understand the ethos or esprit-de-corps which military service engenders in the participants. Grudging, perhaps, but in the main, some sixty years after Great Britain completed her part in the grand alliance which overthrew Hitler’s legions, military service was, in the main, respected.

fir%20for%20heroes.jpgSo what are we to understand from the planners and objectors to a scheme by the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen’s Families Association (SSAFA) whereby a large seven-bedroomed house in Ashstead, Surrey would be converted into a short-term residence for family and relatives of injured and rehabilitating Service personnel at the nearby Headley Court military rehabilitation centre. As our far-sighted M.O.D. Medical people have closed, sold off or downgraded all the local miltary hospitals which used to double as recuperation bases for these unsung heroes, they are now shuttled off to Headley Court to try and resume an abbreviated normality. So the (mainly) young family members are forced to travel long distances, at a high cost both in terms of hotels, accomodation etc., whilst trying to get to know their husband or son who has been wounded in the service of his country!

SSAFA’s attempts to give a resting place for a few of these families has come up against a strong and vociferous opposition from over eighty "residents" of nearby streets in this leafy suburb. As can be read here,  they exhibit all the classic NIMBY signs, but attempt to disguise this disgraceful attitude behind slogans such as “Additional unwanted traffic that would create noise, pollution, and a hazard to small children, horses etc” , as well as “Additional noise, fumes from increased traffic”, and the slightly surreal "… the proposed existence of any business premises in what is, and always has been, a wholly and solely private residential road”.

So worried and distraught wives, parents, partners and children who were going to be offerred a travel haven while their wounded kin were lying recovering stand a fair chance of no respite in this updated "Land fit for Heroes!"

Scouting. Quintessentially British. 100 years old. Thriving.

By ATWadmin On July 31st, 2007 at 5:49 am

100 years ago,  Lord  Robert Paden-Powell harnessed that unique British genius for inspiring groups of people to do the     proper thing when he organized the Scouting Movement.

Typically British, scouting emphasizes the great outdoors and outdoor adventures.  Scouting teaches a code for living,  a code for a  happy, healthy and productive life, but leaves it up to the individual scout to make the right choices.   Scouting is not proscriptive.

Scouting, democratic in nature,  emphasizes “learning by doing.”  Leadership is decentralized and scout leaders, troops and the scouts, themselves, have free rein within the general framework.

100 years later, scouting thrives and the movement is helping youth throughout the world establish happy, healthy and productive lives.

Representing the very best of the British genius, scouting celebrates its centennial this summer in London.

britishasians_pa203b.jpgOh dear! More than a third of British Asians do not feel British. Research for the Asian Network discovered 38% of the UK residents of South Asian origin polled felt only slightly or not at all British. More than a third agreed to get on in the UK they needed to be a "coconut", a term for somebody who is "brown on the outside but white on the inside". Three-quarters felt their culture was being diluted by living in the UK and nearly half believed white people do not treat them as British.

Herein lies the problem. They are very happy to live amongst us but they want to retain their own cultural ways and keep apart from is and THIS is where it all goes wrong. For far too long we have indulged this multiculti nonsense. Bottom-line – IF you want to live in the UK then you adopt our ways, you integrate into our society, and you accept our laws. As for feeling like a coconut -isn’t that a bit of a racist thing to say?

The Larry Vaughn Mentality

By ATWadmin On July 29th, 2007 at 12:20 pm

Jaws was on telly last night.  Yes I watched it.  It’s probably only about the fortieth time I’ve seen it this year.  ITV1 is running its Jaws Season this week to commemorate the 32nd anniversary of this iconic movie’s general release in the United States (though its film premiere there was actually 20.06.75).  By sheer coincidence a holidaymaker in Cornwall has said he may have filmed what could be the first ever sighting of a great white shark in United Kingdom waters.  People claim great whites were also seen off Devon and Cornwall in 1999 and 2003, but proof was sadly lacking.  However, Nick Fletcher from Rotherham says he has filmed a twelve foot shark hunting dolphins off the coast at St Ives.

It could be a porbeagle or a mako; smaller relatives of the white shark that are very common in waters around the British Isles.  On the other hand it could be a juvenile white (it wouldn’t be an adult at this length).  Two of Britain’s leading shark experts, Richard Pierce and Oliver Crimmen, have said they cannot rule out the possibility of the sighting being of a great white.  If true, it’s fantastic news.

Then along comes officialdom to spoil the party.  Marc Thomas, of the Falmouth Coastguard, has dismissed the sighting as ‘rubbish’ and intimated that those who keep an open mind on the subject are ‘scaremongering’.  How would he know what species it is?  Lifeguards are expert in saving people’s lives, not in elasmobranchology.  Thomas doesn’t appear to be enamoured with the news.  Like Mayor Larry Vaughn in Jaws, he seems more concerned with ensuring the tourist season doesn’t falter on the back of this potential breakthrough.

Mr Thomas this isn’t 1975!!  People across the western world have a much more sophisticated appreciation of the beauty of sharks in this day and age.  If anything, verification of the arrival of great white sharks in UK waters could well be a big pull for tourists.  Countries from the USA to South Africa to Australia have much healthier coastal tourist economies than we do, even though white sharks are relatively common in all three countries (there have been 19 fatal shark attacks in Australia alone since 1990; there has NEVER been a fatal attack committed by a shark in British waters).  Perhaps the Larry Vaughns of Cornwall should look at this as a new phenomenon, not as a mis-perceived threat to the tourist industry.

‘What did you say the name of this shark is?’

‘It’s a Carcharodon carcharias.  It’s a great white.’

‘But you don’t have the tooth.’

Armbands.jpgA sign of the times in which we live is manifest in the news that swimming pool staff in Dorset have been forbidden from lending armbands to children in case they get an infection from blowing them up.  The Council which imposed this ludicrous diktat says it was only following rules inssued by the Institute of Sports and Recreational Management. The ban also covers rubber rings. Leisure centres across Britain have been ordered to train staff how to "safely" give out armbands. Bureaucrats insist that staff would have to be retrained to follow safety rules – and so swimming pool bosses have decided it is easier to axe them.

So, better to allow kids to potentially drown than to offer them the use of armbands that might encourage them to learn to swim. Yeah, makes so much sense. My goodness, the little Hitler’s in our Councils are out of control!
