As regular readers will know, we have been running a poll on the topic of the Death Penalty. I asked the question “Do you support the Death Penalty for certain crimes such as mass murder” and I’m closing the poll today. Those who support the motion are shown as red dots on the map, whilst those who oppose it are shown as green dots! The answer to the question on ATW is a resounding “YES”, with around 70% supporting the use of the death penalty in these special circumstances.

What intrigued me most was the way this issue is viewed either side of the Atlantic. Looking at the maps which show who voted where, I see a sea of red Stateside, with around 90% supporting the death penalty. Perhaps this is not a big surprise since the US does still  use this penalty and it appears to meet with the approval of the vast majority of Americans who visit ATW, at the very least. But when I look at mainland Europe, I see a tide of green, indicating opposition to the use of the Death Penalty. It’s clear Europeans are not interested in this sanction, which is perhaps not that surprising either given the history of secular post WW2 Euroland. Looking at the UK, I note that opinion seems split about 50:50 whereas in Ireland, it reflects continental European values in opposing this sanction.

I know that polls must all be treated with suspicion but the difference in outlook on this important issue is marked between the US and Europe, and with several hundred votes now in, I thought you might be interested in the detail!

houses_of_parliament_and_lords_london_england.jpgBack at ATW central after my weekend break in London. Having teenage kids means one thing – shopping, and for me that is a fate worse than death but one I endure in the name of family compromise! We had a great time but as always with a weekender it goes by in a twinkling of an eye. I did enjoy Spamalot and we had an excellent Saturday evening meal in the sumptuous surroundings of the Cinnamon Club. I always do enjoy London but my goodness does it involve walking here and there – my feet felt like they had been in a marathon!!

I couldn’t help but notice the growing legions of Burka/Niqab clad-females in the major stores around Oxford Street – with section of Selfridges and Harrods looking like downtown Tehran. One of the things that surprised me that these Islamic ladies were busy buying the richest trinkets produced by the running dogs of the infidel West. I do understand that there is a place for modesty in how one dresses but I honestly do find the sight of these covered up legions of Islam disconcerting because more than anything else, I believe they are making a political statement and they are getting more confident by the day. I also saw the "Peace Camp" outside Parliament – a bunch of out and out extreme left wackos who litter the grass a few yards from the statue of Sir Winston Churchill.  They were waving placards calling for the arrest of Gordon Brown as a "war criminal" LOL.

One of the real treats for me when in London is admiring the wonderful architecture, some of it hundreds of years old. You can walk along a side-street and suddenly come across the most fantastic old building that takes your breath away. Got back through Heathrow with no bother and finished the day with the Italian Rugby team on our flight – mamma mia! With my wife and kids shopped out, I now hope to return to the normality of the insanity of ATW! Now, where to start…..???

I’m always pleased to receive mail from our erudite and well-informed readership. And then there’s the mail I receive from Patrick McAleer, which I want to share WITH YOU as I know his words of wisdom will impress. Earlier today he penned the following important message…

"you are obviously bollox neo-con propaganda evidenced by the fact you support the colonists/unionists in the north of Ireland."

Intrigued, I requested more information from him, and he has graciously sent me another message….

one thing i am not, is a bigot. Mr Vance, how does it feel to know that the majority of the world supports the cause for irish freedom and unification? No doubt you will blame the old republican propaganda machine, instead of actually realising the truth….that nobody likes to support bigots .The UKUP done really well in the elections…..HAHAHA !

Patrick’s unique style of writing (I left his punctuation intact) certainly gave me pause for thought and I hope you, dear reader, will also tremble with awe at the machinations of such a mind. I hope Patrick will share more of his thoughts with us on ATW and am sure his fellow Irish republicans will relish seeing one from their fold express such eloquent and substantive political comments.

Well folks, here we are in August and the year whizzes by! Pleased to say that July saw ATW record new levels of visitors, with a 15% growth on June and our highest figures ever. Very pleased to see the site grow and grow and I wanted to once again express my thanks to all my fellow-writers and to our ever-growing band of readers. I see that some other sites get themselves all excited about entering competitions for "Best Blog" but I really can’t be bothered with any of that. We stand on our own and all I care about is making sure you find ATW worthy of your time. Thanks for stopping by and make sure you keep a-calling! It’s also interesting to look at the political views of those who do visit this site. The poll on the top left hand side of this blog may be unscientific but I guess it does give some insight into the fact that whilst we are unreservedly "Right of Liberal" MANY who visit here have very different views and I’m pleased that they find us foaming at the mouth right wing war-mongers worth a visit! I think it’s good that we have really varied views and long may it continue!

The 1st July – a new month starts and the blogging cycle for 2007 reaches the halfway point! Where does the time go? Wanted to share with you the news that June saw ATW reach new high levels of traffic, with an all-time high number of unique visitors. So, despite the occasional techie problem, despite the occasional outbreak of in-fighting, despite the continued criticism of this blog from the moonbat fringe, we’re STILL on the rise! And that’s all down to YOU! My promise is that, with the help of all my excellent fellow-writers, and of course your continued patronage, we’ll try to make the next six months as much fun, as infuriating, hopefully as funny even, as the last six. Thanks again for stopping by and tell your friends about ATW – it’s THE place to go when you want to express your views. We may be "a mentally deficient pack of phobes" BUT our aim is true.

The day started out so promising – I had several stories identified to go through with you and then – my laptop ceased working! I think the graphics card has bitten the dust – or else the screen is dodgy – either way it’s taken a while for me to get an alternative PC working, but I’m b-a-c-k-k-k-k-k!

More to follow….

tangledpubnn0.jpgHi folks! Now that Squarespace have solved all our technical problems and we load faster than a speeding bullet (Mucho thanks to Anthony and his team!) I just wanted to let you know that the month of May saw ATW clock up record traffic levels! On behalf of all my fellow-writers, my sincere thanks to you for taking the time to drop by and check out our material. Best of all, we saw a fantastic 25% in NEW visitors to the site, which is terrific news. Thankfully, we have also seen the departure of some of those deranged trolls whose presence only sullied our site and we just keep growing.

In order to ensure continued site access improvement, I would urge those ATW readers who regularly visit and who like to comment to become REGISTERED with this site. That way, you achieve posting priority and become part of our elite inner circle!! If you have already registered, you need take no more action, but if you haven’t, just drop me an email at the "Email the Editor" link and I will set you up. (Your details will only be visible to me.)

Once again, thanks for your continued patronage and here’s hoping we can just keep exceeding our records month by month.

Just to say that the hard working Anthony Casalena from Squarespace has made some significant change overnight to the ATW site which seems to have solved all "slowness" issues. I am now able to post and comment, log-in and the rest fast as a bullet. Is it OK for you, dear reader? If so, please let Anthony know!

By ATWadmin On June 5th, 2007 at 10:37 am

I have to say that Anthony from Squarespace is working very hard to ensure our problems are eased and so once more I ask you to feedback how you find the site today. The more detailed your response the better as it helps Squarespace work out what is going on from the most important perspective – YOURS!
