Miserere Mei!

In 1630, the Italian composer Allegri put Psalm 51 to music so divine that the Vatican decreed that it was reserved for performances in only the Sistine Chapel.

It remained unpublished outside the confines of the Vatican until Mozart heard it sung in the Sistine whilst visiting Rome in 1770, handed the full composition, written from memory, to Dr. Charles Burney, who published the work in 1771.
