AN IRA/SINN FEIN MAYOR FOR BELFAST?

By ATWadmin On June 4th, 2007

I see that IRA/Sinn Fein will discover today whether a member of that organisation is to be Lord Major of Belfast for only the second time. Belfast city councillors meet later to elect a successor to serve for the next year in succession to Pat McCarthy of the SDLP. It is Sinn Féin’s “turn” to hold the top City Hall post again, but although it is the largest party it does not have a majority and needs the support of other parties to get their candidate elected. The party is putting forward 30-year-old north Belfast councillor Tierna Cunningham for the Mayorship and insiders believe she will get the job. I’m sure they are right. Belfast City Council is a sordid political sewer steeped in political machinations that typify that place bring further shame on Northern Ireland.

-What put you in such a good mood this morning david?

  2. Ciarnan,

LOL – It’s being so happy that keeps me going!

  3. I don’t have much of a problem with this as long as they put forward someone with clean hands. Alex maskey, for all his faults, was an excellent mayor.

  4. Mad.

I just almost fell off my chair! You said something about a shinner which wasn’t hateful!

The times they are a changin’

  5. Daithi – if you look back you’ll see That I was very appreciative of his tenure as Mayor – Would to God that SF ditched Adams and replaced him with Alex .

  6. Is that all the shinners have to do to get your vote?

  7. LOL – not quite – but it would be progress.

  8. David Vance,

"Belfast City Council is a sordid political sewer steeped in political machinations…"

I see you’ve been hitting the history books again.

  9. MR

Alex was an excellent Mayor and from canvassing for him in his first two Assembly elections in South Belfast can testify that his role as Mayor was a major turing point in the constituency.

That being said MR you assume wrong if you consider Alex a "dove", I have discussed this before with you. There is no difference politically between Gerry Kelly and Alex Maskey, both are dedicated Republicans.

  10. Chris,

    To what was Alex dedicated?

  11. Question:

Does the Mayor have any real powers?

  12. David

    To what was Alex dedicated?

The same as any other member of our movement, a 32 County Socialist Republic

    JG

Does the Mayor have any real powers?

    Not really

  13. Pity it’s the same in the south. I think local government should be given far more power.

    a 32 County Socialist Republic

You won’t see that mentioned in any SF literature! The sanitised version is "an Ireland of equals" 🙂

  14. I agree about local government although RPA is increasing the powers of local government in the North.

You won’t see that mentioned in any SF literature! The sanitised version is "an Ireland of equals"

I know, we must be carefull not to scare the poor sensative folk. Reds under the bed and all that 😉

  15. It’s a problem, Chris. The People Before Profit alliance is basically the Socialist Workers Party in different clothes. Not mention of socialism in their literature…

  16. Socialist workers party???

    *spits on ground*

    Shower of…;)

  17. Why, Chris? 🙂

  18. I have had several run ins with SWP members, it has never been pleasent. They live on a different planet to most people and are very like the stickies, i.e very dodgy on Republicanism.

    not Marxist enough [lol]

  20. i.e very dodgy on Republicanism

I don’t think so, Chris. Very dodgy on nationalism, yes, but not republicanism.

Some very good people in the SWP but I have to say your "different planet" comment is not without foundation! 😉

  21. "i.e very dodgy on Republicanism."

What do you mean Chris? Would they shake the Queen’s hand if she came over for a visit? [lol]

  22. I don’t think so, Chris. Very dodgy on nationalism, yes, but not republicanism

    Dodgy on both JG

What do you mean Chris? Would they shake the Queen’s hand if she came over for a visit? [lol]

I was going to say should you not be licking a window somewhere but then I remembered that’s not exactly PC these days. How would you say it in US, of yes, you’re a stupid f*****! 😉

  23. Chris,

Personally, I’d have a lot more time for them than the Stickies.

When you have a few minutes, take a look at this:

Now, Now Chris, just because the SWP didn’t favour blowing the Royal family up, that doesn’t mean they’re not the ‘real’ republicans [lol]

  25. The Sticks make Shinners nervous because they see what is ahead of them. SF these days are not a million miles away from where the Sticks were in the mid 70s.

Not a lot of difference between Alex and MM, GK or GA Chris ? Will MM be attendng the wreath laying at the Cenotaph ths November ?

You definitely have a point there, MR.

  27. Will MM be attendng the wreath laying at the Cenotaph ths November ?

    No, but neither did Alex

  28. You know what I mean 🙂

  29. This is all moot now as the kamikaze Stoops just helped elect a Unionist Mayor.

  30. "This is all moot now as the kamikaze Stoops just helped elect a Unionist Mayor."

    Chris,

Didn’t you know it’s tradition to elect the Belfast Major on ‘Heads or Tails’?….This has always been the way among the parties and reluctantly IRA/Sinn Fein agreed to participate fully when they used the pound instead of the Punt.
