I have to say that Anthony from Squarespace is working very hard to ensure our problems are eased and so once more I ask you to feedback how you find the site today. The more detailed your response the better as it helps Squarespace work out what is going on from the most important perspective – YOURS!

  1. Log onto the site – OK

    Comment – slow to creat

    Comment – Preview OK

Comment – very slow to confirm after preview

Comment – sometimes disappears I know not where after confirming following preview.

Comment – sometimes very slow that "web site unavailable" fills the screen but the comment has been placed.

  2. very, very variable in loading comments David – though nothing like as bad as in the past. This comment took only 4 seconds to load.

  3. The above comment wasn’t sarcastic. I find the forum sections quick to load, but very slow when making a comment.

  4. I suppose the point is that its inconsistent at best. The loading of the site and the posting of comments can vary dramatically over the day. Some times after Squarespace have ‘looked’ at this issue, it appears ok for a short while and then the performance degrades.

  5. Same as Peter T above. Very frustrating.
Yesterday was fantastic, everything fast and smooth.
Today is awful when trying to comment.
I’ll come back this evening and see how it’s going.
    Good luck fixing it.

  6. Who’s being called a mixed bag?

I’ll have you know that I can trace my ancestors back through one generation!

  7. Mike,

that’s a relatively short time to have come down from the trees!

  8. Anthony from Squarespace –

ATW has its good and bad days. Sometimes I have to log in just to bring the site up, sometimes it’s fine as it has been for the last couple of days.

A huge number of blogs out there work perfectly well day after day. So, apart from the superior content, what’s different and particular about ATW?

  9. Just posted a comment upon the post below, and it took two odd minutes to load after I hit the mouse!

  10. The problems do not seem to have gone away, yet.
When I first tried to connect to ATW about 45 minutes ago, the site would not load at all, I had to try again 10 mins later. And my most recent comment took between 1 and 2 mins to refresh the page and appear.

  11. Is it possible that certain scheming detractors have hacked in and set up some sort of virus or other malicious code inside the site? Is that a possibility that should be investigated?

  12. Dead Slow,

Trying to get to the comments on this Post from the Main page.

    Mutter, mutter….

  13. Guys —

We’ve identified what the issues are (I hope). We’re pushing live an update tonight that will correct things.

Pete asked what the situation is with this site in particular. It’s the fact that there are over 2,200 posts, and 40,000 update log entries on this site. You’re seeing slowness when posting a comment because of the re-rendering step for the "recent comments" and such pulling from such a large update log. On our test system (with the data set from this site), our optimization took a certain action related to this from 25 seconds down to one. This is not a server issue, but instead an issue related to a query on this large data set.

It was a bit hard to figure out that this site had such volume — and the issue really presents itself in full post-commenting, which is why it was so confusing to diagnose at first. Most readers experience this site at full speed, but the commenters see the problem arise in full.

I’ll be testing overnight with you guys to ensure every commenter says they’re seeing an optimal experience.

  14. posting on this site from the US takes forever from the time you hit the create post button till it actually happens. Thats when it lets you post at all…

  15. Troll’s right. It barely works from overseas. Thumbs down on squarespace–if they haven’t fixed it by now, they never will.

    Has ATW outgrown Squarespace?

  17. It seems better to me, lets give it a few days and cut Casalena a small break – you sound worn out man 🙂
