Ssshhhh, don’t tell Martin McGuinness..he might only choke on his cornflakes.

Almost 30,000 residents of the Republic of Ireland have applied to become British citizens over the past three years. A total of 27,361 applications for British passports were received at the British Embassy in Dublin.

Great to see so many of our Irish neighbours wanting to embrace all the benefits that come with being British! I am sure they will be very happy as British citizens, joining those many many other Irish people who decided that life gets better when you become a British citizen.

  1. ” joining those many many other Irish people who decided that life gets better when you become a British citizen.”

maybe not better, but we have better quality “dope operas”, voter apathy reigns supreme, and no one will stop them setting up their own “republic in exile”, headquarters Kilburn… 😉
    C’mon me bhoyos,
    what’re you waiting for?

  2. If your going to quote the Belfast Telegraph please notify in advance so we can quickly disregard.

  3. About 10,000 a year. In a country with a population of about 4.5 million.

These folks are not exactly stampeding the gates of the British consulate. These numbers are probably not much different from historical averages.

  4. Some people appreciate the finer things in life.

  5. of course no mention, no research, no idea, about the numbers going the other way, very much like I did in 2004.

    Rolls eyes…

  6. A little reading will show that the numbers of Brits seeking Irish citizenship are similar, which is to be expected.

  7. “To be born an Englishman is to win first prise in the lottery of life”. Cecil Rhodes.
All Irish applicants are required to answer:- Do you agree with this?

It seems Marty, far from choking on his cornflakes, is one of those pushing this idea!
