Now who would have thought this?

Irish republican terrorists could attack the Olympics while American and Israeli athletes may be a target for al Qaeda, MI5 fears. In its annual report, the ISC said Jonathan Evans, the director general of MI5, had highlighted three potential treats to the Olympics.

: An attack by al Qaeda and its affiliates – particularly on US or Israeli nationals.

: An attack or a hoax by Irish republican terrorist groups aimed at causing disruption rather than mass casualties.

: Clashes between rival groups or ethnicities present in London during the Games who would not normally be considered a security threat to the UK.

Wonder who the “ethnicities” might be in the third point raised? Still, interesting to see Irish terrorism is still world class.

  1. An attack or a hoax by Irish republican terrorist groups aimed at causing disruption rather than mass casualties.

Any gobshite with the price of a phone call can make a threat.

Still, interesting to see Irish terrorism is still world class.

They would like to believe they are and you would like to believe they are but it’s not true.

  2. Henry is correct, they’d love people to think that when in fact all they are is a marginalised group of malcontent wastrels.

  3. Any Irish republican thinking of attacking the Olympics would need to be truly out of his mind.

Fomenting international (alright, American) support was a key plank in the republican propaganda campaign. The image of the plucky little Irishman standing up against the dastardly British invaders still lingers on. Just about the best way of destroying it is to attack an international gathering like the Olympics.

  4. I suspect on this occasion the Irish were lumped in to take the bare look off the real threat.

  5. Police must anticipate any possible threat. Including this one, which yes , seems remote.

I’m not sure why MI5 sees the need to blabber about it publicly, though.

  6. Cause like our guys they don’t want people saying they didn’t anticipate something. Cover your you know what.

  7. Here’s my suggestion:

Get those 3500 British Army soldiers earmarked for the Olympics over to Belfast post-haste for a quick “refresher course” while the Marching Season is still on..

That way they can help to keep the peace in Belfast whilst preparing to prevent a war in London… 😉

Oh yes, and ask the Israelis to advise on crowd control. I’m sure they’d be delighted to help out… 🙂

  8. “Israel is hotly tipped to get gold in the Apartheid and Racism events!”

    Petr,
how’s the “Communism for Dummies” course going down in your neighbourhood?
    Anyone rallying to the flag?
I would have thought a man of your wit and education would be packing them in..

  9. “3500 British Army soldiers earmarked for the Olympics”

You mean the ones who’ve been practising running in Northern Ireland for years?

Incredibly funny Noel. Bet you were never in the I Ran Away either. Still easier to take a poke at someone on a comments page than to face them like a man.

You’re really on fire today with your cheap jibes.

  11. Noel,
What you can’t/won’t understand is that the vast majority of British people i.e. the English, the Scots, the Welsh AND the Northern Irish are proud of our soldiers.
They are a legitimate expression of a legitimate government representing a legitimate nation: of which Northern Ireland by DEMOCRATIC choice, remains a legitimate part.

Far, far better and nobler, than a bunch of malcontents and rebels who so want their OWN WAY, REGARDLESS of the majority, they are willing to bomb, maim, kneecap, and intimidate their own IRISH neighbours, whilst shooting REAL men in uniforms IN THE BACK.
    Noel’s on fire, Paul?
I wouldn’t waste my piss on him.

  12. Agitated

Northern Ireland by DEMOCRATIC choice, remains a legitimate part.

Ireland was brought into the UK as an entity and should have been allowed to leave peacefully when it voted to do so. The very existence of NI is undemocratic. It exists through force. Ireland was divided by British guns and in the end that is what maintains the border. We are left to try to find a peaceful solution to a violent problem. British violence in Ireland is the root cause of the issue.

  13. //I wouldn’t waste my piss on him.//

Agit8ed, you wouldn’t have any left if I as much as said BOO to you.

    robleau,
I was unable to find that funny video of soliders running from children in Belfast during the Troubles, so you’ll have to do with this withdrawal from a pub, although it isn’t clear if the soldiers are retreating from the angry patrons, the quality of the music or their first smell of real beer.

  14. David uses the word ‘Ireland’, i forget the entire island poses a terror risk. Ireland is not a terrorist, renegade republicans are.

  15. Found it.

This is for Robeau and Agit8ed

Some of Agit8ed’s “British Army soldiers earmarked for the Olympics” training for the sprint in Belfast with their Irish coaches.

  16. Henry94,
    It is NOT “British violence”.
You could say that the ENGLISH,during periods of expansionism (you know Henry, when nations decide they want to spread their wings a bit..) fought/invaded Ireland and took over parts of it.
    And I would agree.
You could say that ENGLAND during periods of expansionism, consolidated their gains in Ireland by settling ENGLISH people and SCOTTISH people and even IRISH people in the North, and I would agree.

But we are where we are. We are now beginning to see change, and possibly a new united future for Northern Ireland.

But all the idiots and romantics and those who use “the Cause” to justify killing and maiming and intimidation, have NO RIGHT to sneer at our soldiers who obeyed orders and did their tours of Northern Ireland, and did it to the best of their ability.
I would far rather trust a British squaddie than a supporter of “the Cause”.
    You know why?
Because I would feel safer turning my back to the squaddie.

  17. “Agit8ed, you wouldn’t have any left if I as much as said BOO to you.”

Come on over and find out for yourself, Noel.
Oh, and don’t bring any of your big brave bhoys with you.

  18. I would far rather trust a British squaddie than a supporter of “the Cause”

Have you ever met “a supporter of The Cause” Agi?

I have absolutely no qualms in admitting that there were some decent individuals in the British Army, (some even naively thought that they were being sent over to ‘keep the warring tribes apart’ on some knd of peace mission), but my experience of the collective British Army has been an overwhelmingly negative one,(particularly Scots regiments).

Agit8ed, you wouldn’t have any left if I as much as said BOO to you.”
Come on over and find out for yourself, Noel.

C’mon fellas, play nice. Internet handbagging is below both of you.

  19. //I would far rather trust a British squaddie than a supporter of “the Cause”.
    You know why?//

    Yes, because you’re British.

  20. Noel,
David’s now got my mobile number. You should feel honoured, you’ll be the first ATWer to get it.
Incidentally I am English first, British second, and I support the British Army. Snide remarks about them and a literary appreciation of Rudyard Kipling make strange bedfellows indeed.

  21. An attack or a hoax by Irish republican terrorist groups aimed at causing disruption rather than mass casualties.

Who needs a terrorist attack to cause disruption. Simply hand London the Olympics and there is all the disruption in the world. Not only that, but there’s disruption spread across the country when the pagan ‘Flame’ (H/T to nazi Germany) tours the country.

  22. Not forgeting the disruption to hundreds of businesses which were violently ejected from their premises, the disruption to taxpayers who are looted of billions to glorify the State, and the chaos about to unfold now that the Zil lanes are going in so the great ones can avoid mingling with the peasants.

  23. Agit8ed

But we are where we are. We are now beginning to see change, and possibly a new united future for Northern Ireland.

That seems a very limited ambition. Uniting all the people on the island should be the objective irrespective of whatever the political arrangements are at a particular time.

  24. So, on disruption – are the Olympics the cause of greater disruprion than an IRA attack?

  25. That would only work if the security cameras were controlled by an Israeli firm and they all failed at the same crucial time, like on 7/7, 9/11’s airports, the shoe-bomber going through security at Paris, the underwear bomber going through security at Schiphol . . . but that could never happen. OOPS – it DID happen!!

  26. The British Army are the best in the world, and we stood in the open in uniform against terrorists of any hue and defeated them.

    End of.
