By Mike Cunningham On February 17th, 2013

‘In October 1984, when the Brighton bomb went off,  I felt a surge of excitement at the nearness of her demise and yet disappointment that such a chance had been missed.

…………..before the private cremation when the body will be flame-grilled with gherkins and a slice of cheese.” Now that’s a funeral I would turn out for.’

A Labour Party spokesman said: ‘John made these comments many years ago and of course does not condone  or wish harm on anyone.’

Show me your friends, tell me of what they speak; and I shall tell you who and what you are!

Who was that said to – Judas?

  2. Strange sense of outrage when there are many here on ATW who have similar feelings of almost orgasmic proportions when a bomb / rocket explodes or is dropped from an airplane in Afghanistan / Iraq / mid – east etc.

Some here have even advocated that the children of those whose politics they disagree with should be killed.

Show me your friends, tell me of what they speak; and I shall tell you who and what you are!

    Indeed.

  3. Many people forget how strong was the grip of the Left on this nation. The Tories had their high class Unitraitors, Labour had its Union leaders and politicians.
Of course we lazy British just let it all happen.
One of the things I admired about the States is that ordinary people eventually turned against the corruption and McCarthyism of the times. We British are not really free -perhaps we never were.

  4. Pauly,
“Some here have even advocated that the children of those whose politics they disagree with should be killed.”
I think we both know that the person who said that did not really mean it and regretted saying it.

  5. Agit8ed

In fairness I have seen some loathsome comments from posters on here before so before anyone shouts out in mock outrange in some kind of Simpsonesque “Won’t somebody think of the children” passion they should think back on those comments.

  6. I think we both know that the person who said that did not really mean it and regretted saying it.

Disagree. He never withdrew it. He stuck to his guns. Nice of you to give him the benefit of the doubt though, a benefit which naturally you’ll also extend to the Labour candidate, yes?

  7. People wished Ted Kennedy dead and rejoiced when he died.

  8. I think it’s quite obvious that he absolutely meant it Agi. As for regretting saying it, Hasn’t John Farrell done the same?

  9. Agit8ed – Regret is not the same as not meaning something. Some people regret their comments revealed something about them, more than they regret the actual comments.

However, the point that someone here posted comments equal in vile nature to those written by this candidate is rather besides the point since such person(s) are not running for office. People who wish that those who disagree with them politically be dead are certainly not suited for office.

  10. Chris,
I have made comments myself that I have regretted afterwards and tried to aplogise for.
I think blogging is like internet dating.
You build up an image of person or issue in your mind and start addressing that instead of the reality.
And that’s how you end up married to a Mongolian yak herder by the name of “Lonesome Lil…”

  11. Agie – lol

  12. Mahons — Do you think he should be banned from running for office because of these comments?

  13. Paul,
    I like the man.
    He can’t help being American.
    He has Italian-Irish parentage.
A deadly combination in anyone’s book.
You’re condemned to either run a pizza place or a bar.
What kind of choice is that?

  14. And that’s how you end up married to a Mongolian yak herder by the name of “Lonesome Lil…”

    😀

Liking or disliking the guy doesn’t detract from what he said Agi. I’m sure John Farrell’s a nice guy too.

  15. “Agit8ed – Regret is not the same as not meaning something. Some people regret their comments revealed something about them, more than they regret the actual comments. ”

    Mahons,
    No offence.
You’re a lawyer. You work with what people say and then try to convince the Jury that YOU know what they really meant when they said them.
A man could end up getting six months in the slammer just for saying
    “Good Morning” to you…. 🙂

  16. “He has Italian-Irish parentage.
A deadly combination in anyone’s book.
You’re condemned to either run a pizza place or a bar.

I think Francie Boyle described this comment well when he said, let’s close the racist door.

How is being of Irish or Italian decent a deadly combination?

  17. “Liking or disliking the guy doesn’t detract from what he said Agi. I’m sure John Farrell’s a nice guy too.”

I don’t know the man, but if you and I met up, we would both be surprised by how we are really.
    Frankly,
    I think I’d be traumatised..

  18. S’ a leg pull Chris.

  19. No bother Agi, I tend to be on crouching tiger stance on ATW, ready to pounce at a moments notice 😉

  20. Petr – No, he shouldn’t be banned from running for office. No one should be banned for expressing an opinion.

  21. Grand — Then we agree the voters will decide his fitness or otherwise for office!

  22. Petr – The voters will decide whether he wins, his fitness is another story.

  23. “How is being of Irish or Italian decent a deadly combination?”

One can’t stop talking, the other can’t stop arguing.
    You’d never get served.

  24. Hitler made the trains run on time and liked dogs Agi.

    I think I’d be traumatised..

    I would certainly try 🙂

  25. Petr – The voters will decide whether he wins, his fitness is another story.

    So, who decides his fitness?

  26. Petr – Those with the ability to reason, to make judgment based upon the facts, and to discern the difference between what is true and what is not. In other words, those people who carry the burden of thought (a burden not necessarily shared by one and all here).

Is it easier for you if the person in question was not someone whom you might support? Lets try it this way. George W. Bush, was he someone about whom you have an opinion that is not favorable? Sarah Palin? Mitt Romney? Mr. Ahern? Ms. Thatcher?

  27. “Hitler made the trains run on time and liked dogs Agi.”

So maybe that’s why Allan likes him?

  28. “Those with the ability to reason, to make judgment based upon the facts, and to discern the difference between what is true and what is not. In other words, those people who carry the burden of thought (a burden not necessarily shared by one and all here). ”
    Mahons,
I can just see your eyes a-shining, and your chin(s) a-quivering with righteousness as you wrote that…

  29. Agit8ed – If you feel the need to express an internet fantasy about another man may I suggest that your position on homosexuality is ironic.

  30. Ooooooh,
    You’re so masterful Mahons.
I do so love it when you’re cross with me.

  31. Agit8ed

With that last comment I now have an image of you as Dick Emery 😉

  32. There you go Colm,
    Just for you..

  33. Thanks Mandy 🙂

  34. Is it easier for you if the person in question was not someone whom you might support? Lets try it this way. George W. Bush, was he someone about whom you have an opinion that is not favorable? Sarah Palin? Mitt Romney? Mr. Ahern? Ms. Thatcher?

lol I don’t support the British Labour Party either! But Mahons, his fitness is not something that can be worked out like a mathematical problem as you suggest. It is your opinion that he is unfit, nothing more.

  35. Petr – Does the word “fit” lose its meaning as one crosses the Atlantic from the US to the UK? By unfit I mean the person is not suitable, and is unworthy of elected office even if he or she manages to get the most votes.

As for my opinion, it certainly is my opinion that the candidate in question is unfit for office, for reasons I have noted on this post and the other from this day relating to him.

  36. “It is your opinion that he is unfit, nothing more.!
    Petr,
Of course looking at his record and achievements helps..

  37. Mahons

No “fit” here means exactly the same sence over here that you are using it.

You could be followed through every thread on this site that you have expressed an opinion on and someone respond “that’s just your opinion” or “it’s not your decision” and it would be as meaningless a response as it is on here.

  38. George Wallace was elected to office on a segregationist platform. Where the voters correct? Was he really fit for office? Must we bow to the, ahem, wisdom of the people in Alabama who voted for him?

    Of course not.
