As long term readers of ATW, I have always opposed the Stasi-like Parades Commission. This instrument of State suppression of religious and civil liberty was created by the dreadful Belfast Agreement and has ensured that whoever threatens the greatest civic disruption wins the day (See under “Garvaghy Road”)

The Orange Order has said comments by its Grand Chaplain over restrictions on parades “are indicative of a growing feeling of discontent among members”. Rev Mervyn Gibson told the BBC the Order may no longer give police notice of parades. He said the order had observed loyalist flag protestors being able to march into Belfast every week without a Parades Commission ruling. The Order said it constantly kept its policy on parades under review. “The comments by Rev Gibson are indicative of a growing feeling of discontent among members over increasing restrictions being placed on our parades by an unaccountable Parades Commission,” the Orange Order said in a statement.

Of course the Orange Order  should NOT give this stasi bureaucracy ANY notice of ANY parades ANYwhere.  There should be a perfect right to peaceful Assembly and parade.  Great to see the OO learning from the Flag Protesters.

  1. There is no suppression of religious and civil liberty with parades. The OO can assemble any time they wish on private property. It is only if they wish to use and block public roads that they have to give notice.

  2. I’d imagine that you’d also support the residents of Ardoyne when they decide to not inform the Parades Commission that they will be blocking the road (you know learning from the Fleg Protesters) when the knuckledraggers try to march down it?

  3. ‘Great to see the OO learning from the Flag Protesters.’

Actually, in terms of refusing to accept democratic decisions, rioting, wanton destruction, attacking the police, violence and attempted murder, I would say it was the Flag Protestors who learned from the OO…

  4. “Rev Mervyn Gibson told the BBC the Order may no longer give police notice of parades. He said the order had observed loyalist flag protestors being able to march into Belfast every week without a Parades Commission ruling.”

I have a vision of the OO tiptoeing down the Garvaghy Road at 3am just to show they can and sicken the Parades Commission. Given their previous idiotic stubbornness, it wouldn’t surprise me.

  5. I wonder how accomodating David would be of the ‘Right to protest and assembly’ if they caused him to have to sit in traffic jams and interfered with his work every day ?

  6. //the Order may no longer give police notice of parades. //

And we’re shivering in our boots.
Let them try. The only place there are marching is into political oblivion.

  7. This instrument of State suppression of religious and civil liberty

What absolute hyperbolic cobblers. The days of the OO being the de facto goverment of the state are long gone and they don’t like it up them.

  8. If this statement is anything other than just one hot head spouting his frustration, then silly marching season is gonna be even more interesting than usual this year…

  9. Wouldn’t it be great if we could all pick and choose which laws to obey? Prohibition of drugs is a denial of personal liberty, so all true libertarians should be conscientious objectors.

  10. ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could all pick and choose which laws to obey?’

Yes, Peter, but we aren’t all Unionists/Loyalists…

er no. see under fleg protesters. These fleg thugs have capitalised on political weakness and now the OO is following suit, these fleg protesters as brian feeney has said have banjaxed the parades commission. The police have accomodated them at every turn, well lets see how they accomodate Ardoyne protesters!!

  12. The Orange Order doesn’t like Order? It has been a group that has used “tradition” to cover intimidation for years. Frankly, I’d let them march away so long as other groups have the same rights. They aren’t impressing anyone but themselves now anyway.

Real victims of the Stasi would howl with laughter at claims that the parade Commission is anything liek the actual Stasi.

    Well said Mahons.

  14. Yeah, it’s a bit like Patty saying the US is increasingly like the USSR. One can make a reasonable argument without such absurdities.

  15. I wish the Parades Commission woukd take a hike or get a heart. It was totally vile to restrict the Kingsmills parade and put the condition of only two members from each family and no photographs of their loved ones. What kind of thick and/or unfeeling bastards could come up with that?
