I don’t think many a betting man would have bet that George Jones would make it to 81. The great country singer from Texas didn’t drink to get drunk, he drank to stay drunk. He blended success and excess like non one else. Multiple negligent marriages and divorces, country music hits and popular music misses, car accidents, no shows for performances, vivid bankruptcy, bottles, drugs and an ability to screw up in ways never though possible Ole George was a one man circus.
But oh my Lord what a voice! The only thing stronger than his baritone was his liver. I know he didn’t have the type of crossover appeal of other country legends, but I’d put him down with Sam Cooke for pure delight. He certainly lived The Grand Tour
