There’s an ongoing reality gap involving University education;

Black and Asian teenagers are more likely to apply to university than white youngsters in England, according to the Ucas admissions service. The analysis of applications also shows big differences within the UK, with Northern Ireland youngsters the most likely to aspire to university.

Can’t wait for Government to prioritise the needs of white young people AND ensure there is positive discrimination in their favour.

About half of young people now apply for university places – in England this rose from 36% to 44% between 2006 and 2010.

The Labour aspiration was for 50% of young people to go to University, and these figures show that they almost succeeded. But what has been achieved as a result?

We have many graduates with worthless degrees and mired in debt emerging from their University life who can look forward to either the most basic jobs in call centres of working filling supermarket shelves, or even years of unemployment. Furthermore, because the SUPPLY of graduates has increased the VALUE of graduates has naturally decreased. Basic economics but one that eludes the political engineers. In one sense, we are educating young people into worthlessness.

  1. It is worse than it appears in both the UK and US for white ” working class ” youth.

    The rich white kids have no problems getting into the university of their choice.

    The black kids can benefit from affirmative action, even if they are well off, in the US anyway.

    The white kid , especially the male, whose parent or parents are just getting by gets to the back of the line behind these groups. No preferences for you, pal.

  2. Is this developement an ‘unintended consequence’, or perhaps all part of a deliberate plan?

    I’m sure Allan might find material for constructing a quite viable conspiracy theory among the various and largely political spoutings of the socilaist proponenets of this faux equality that they persist in following.

    While some might find the target of some fifty percent of our youth achieving a degree to be very worthy, the fact that a ‘degree’ indicated that the holder had an above average intellectual ability, seems to have largely passed been ignored.

    Those within the crafts and artisan arena – long regarded as the ‘working class’, have always had various certificates and diplomas as proof of competence, and all as equally valued as any ‘degree’. In many instances, more so.

    In the socialist sphere of envy inspired ‘equality’, they have disposed of ‘technical colleges’, meaningful apprenticeships, and various other steps for the ‘less able’ to ‘climb the ladder’, obviously seeing then as all far too indicative of the ‘working class’.

    Now its all Uni or nothing! and in the process have devalued any respect that a degree may have once had. To ‘qualify’ used to mean the awardee had at least basic intelligence, interest in their subject and an intention of making it their career. Today only the higher degrees, such as Doctor or Professor still retain the respect once enjoyed.

    I am occasionally reminded of that old socialist ditty, usually sung when drunk, when honest feelings are all too often expressed:-

    “The working class can kiss my arse!
    I’ve got the foreman’s job at last!”

    Today’s sorry situation is sure proof that we cannot all be ‘leaders’…

    Theory? You think that the facts of the deliberate degradation of education before your eyes are theory, or indeed, any other aspects of the ruination of our country? This is the problem faced by realists – any time that plausible explanation with supporting evidence is put forward, the lesser minds have the get-out slogan of ‘conspiracy theory’ because they cannot face the consequences of grasping the matrix of lies in which they are living. Ernest – this is not targetting you, btw.

    Now, why would university grants be abolished and loans introduced? Who could possibly want young people to be on the treadmill of debt BEFORE they even get a job?

    I absolutely agree with you, – the problem is that the reality is often harder to believe than the already mind stretching assumption that our beloved government is acting for ‘our best interests’.

    How much more easy it is to form the opinion that they really are just plain stupid, – and that they rarely contest that assumption, should give the clue that the agenda is worth far more than any damage done to them by having to endure a few insults.

    That our criminal justice and legal system has slowed to a virtual snail’s pace, is another indicator that ‘they’ are quite content with the status quo.

    In passing I admire your patience with some of the commentors here!

  5. The 50% at university target is just bonkers. I never saw any rationale for that being the desirable %.

    I think that there may be an argument for giving young people a space in their life where they can hone a skill, increase their knowledge etc, without the pressure to produce something immediately but which will actually increase the quality and desirabiity of things they eventually produce or deliver. That to me is not necessarily university.

    I think the idea is that a higher % would cost too much and lead to too many graduates.

    All education up to university level should be free for all who can pass an entrance test. Study programmes should also not be reduced to the mere utilitarian, with a view to “usefulness” or future careers etc. Curiosity and a love for learning should be decisive.

    Obviously producing a higher percentage of graduates would increase costs, but in this modern era the simplistic bureacrat answer is to reduce the quality, alter the recipe, and generally widen the field of study to include the most trivial and mundane of specialties. – and they still wonder at the lack of demand for graduates of folk dancing and other other equally shallow subject.

    I strongly suspect that to the lefty mindset a 50 – 50 split, amounts to equality, – such is the lack and narrowness of their thoughts.

    I apologise for getting a bit ‘hot under the collar’ on such matters as, having served on the Apprenticeship Council in my youth, I have had a close-up on the thinking and methods employed by politicians in order get ‘just a few more votes’. I assure you their standards are of the lowest, as is their thinking. You would be appalled!…
