1848 – Gold in first discovered in California.

1915 – Britain’s first air-raid casualties when German Zeppelin airship bombs Great Yarmouth in Norfolk during World War I.

1942 – Birth of British actor Michael Crawford, famous for playing the bumbling Frank Spencer in the 1970s comedy Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em.

1966 In India, Indira Gandhi becomes Prime Minister following in the footsteps of her father Jawaharlal Nehru.

1978 – End of the line for the original Volkswagen Beetle, when the last of the 16 million produced since 1938 rolls off the production line.
