Treat them like smokers.

A report showing that Covid deaths have been 10 times higher in countries with high levels of obesity should serve as a ‘wake up call’ to the West, experts said today.

World Obesity Federation research today found nations where at least half of adults are overweight have accounted for a staggering 90 per cent of global Covid fatalities.

The report suggested thousands of lives may have been saved in the UK if the population was slimmer and lockdown measures may not have needed to be as drastic because there would have been fewer hospital admissions.

Dr Raghib Ali, an epidemiologist at Cambridge University, described the research as a ‘wake-up’ call and said he hopes it will serve as an incentive for Brits to slim down.

Some 90 per cent of Covid deaths have happened in countries with high levels of fatness. I am not entirely surprised. The British government is getting ever more excited about a war on obesity. Given past government success expect obesity levels to take off.

Who can be unaware now that being overweight is very bad for you? There cannot be anyone left who does not know that good, natural food and moderate exercise is the first defence against all illnesses and conditions. To go further, the government must surely tax the fatties and ban eating in cars with children present.

The “body positivity” movement can shut up. There is nothing beautiful admiral or in being grossly overweight. It is beyond contention that being grossly overweight is a killer and a drain on our taxes.

  1. Yes, it’s no coincidence that the two western countries with the worst death rates are also the two most obese – USA and UK.

But when the UK government introduced a modest sugar tax a few years ago it was predictably charged with “nanny-statism” by the usual suspects. The logic of their argument would be to abolish all taxes on cigarettes and alcohol.
