It looks like the Jocks are being dragged out of the Euros against their will. Apparently they’re still trying to untangle the ‘keeper from the net. What a comic flourish.

  1. What with Slovakia beating the Poles, and the Czech beating the Kneelalot Jocks.

You can only imagine the joy in this household today.

Ian Blackford of the Scottish National Party blames Brexit.

    😁

  2. I didn’t see it but I can’t imagine the Czechs honouring communist terrorists.

  3. Phantom.

    No.

The Czech people have lived under Communism previously, they know the danger signs, and have absolutely no intention as far as I can work out of going there again.

  4. The Belgian team, and surprisingly the Spanish referee too, took the knee in St Petersburg, and the gesture was acknowledged by loud booing and jeers from the mainly Russian spectators. The Russian team remained standing.

The readiness to kneel is directly related to the degree to which a country’s culture is dominated by American right-think. Few, if any, eastern European countries have so far been infected, one of the great joys of travelling in eastern Europe as far as I’m concerned.

BTW A remarkable statistic I heard was that of the approx. 430 players present in the competition, no less than 120 play in the Premier League (followed by 90 from the Bundesliga and far fewer from any other national league).
Why’s that, do you think, Pete?

    Hear, hear.

Much wild applause from me there.

    Nail, hit squarely on head.

  6. Noel –

Money. The Premier League is the most watched globally and the clubs earn enormous broadcast revenues. Many of them have super rich owners as well. So they can afford the best talent.

A few clubs across Europe can compete. PSG in France is owned by Qatar. Barcelona and Real Madrid have gamed the broadcast rights for La Lega so they take the lion’s share (and have still racked up 1.5 billion Euro debts between them). Bayern Munich and Juventus are extremely well run clubs. That’s it. Most Premier League clubs can simply outbid almost all clubs across the continent for talent.

  7. Interesting. Thanks.

Probably also because there are relatively many great, and rich, clubs in the Premier League – two in Manchester, two in Liverpool etc etc.

Even the bigest leagues on the continent don’t have more than three or so clubs of such calibre.
