EU nationals have a week to get their papers in order, to ensure they can remain in the UK. It’s a Brexit loose end thing.

With a week to go until the deadline for EU nationals living in the UK to apply for settled status, it is clear that far more EU citizens have been living in the country than previous estimates suggested.

As of 31 May, the government had received 5.6 million applications for the post-Brexit scheme that allows EU (and EEA) nationals to continue living and working in the UK after the end of this month.

That is far higher than the official estimate when the scheme was fully opened in March 2019 that there were 3.7 million (non-Irish) EU nationals in the country.

Everyone but the government knew there were vastly more people in the country than the official figures suggested. The government was out by millions.

These are the people who figure out how many schools, hospitals, houses etc are needed. And that’s why you can’t get an appointment or your little Johnny into the local school. It’s because government is useless, all the time. It is the very worst mechanism for planning anything.

  1. These are the people who figure out how many schools, hospitals, houses etc are needed.

And then they utterly fail to provide them. The Tories have had 11 years of total failure in housebuilding and the by-election defeat last week means they will almost certainly abandon their planning “reforms”. Which were of course written for them by their big-donor housebuilder clients and effectively removed local government from the planning process.

  2. When it comes to housebuilding the government’s job is to get out of the way and let it happen. Government is the block in the form of the planning system. Those who want more and more houses built should be looking here, though it’s unquestionable that house builders are among the primary Tory donors and the reforms were shaped to advantage them.

I hope they all fail because I don’t want more houses built. We have built on enough of our land already.

So the obvious free-market solution is to do away with all planning restrictions.

I don’t want more houses built. We have built on enough of our land already.

You seem to be a tad conflicted Pete. Do you want a planning free-for-all as desired by Taylor-Tory and Persimmon-Tory and the rest of the Tory-donors housebuilder gang, or do you want a total freeze on the so-called greenbelt? It can’t be both.

  4. I want a planning free-for-all with such littkle immigration that there’s no need to build yet more new homes. In fact we need fewer people. We are too congested already.

  5. Fewer people means zero growth, David Attenborough stuff.

You are a Greenie Pete, no question about it. You are just in denial.

  6. The original green belt was a Tory creation in the 1930s and was consolidated by Labour after WW2 when the first national parks were also created. It’s fair to say that Tory voters have always been the green belt’s biggest supporters for the simple reason that it preserves their leafy suburbs and villages. This is Simon Heffer, an old school High Tory writing this week in the Labour-supporting New Statesman . Most of it is a demolition of Johnson, but here is the bit on the green belt:

“It was perhaps bad luck for Johnson that this by-election occurred in a seat at the sharp end of the raging debate over planning reform, on the north-west outskirts of London. Ever since the 1930s when, to shore up the core vote, the administration of Neville Chamberlain was forced to design the Green Belt Act, voters in the Conservative heartlands around the capital have been anxious to conserve what remains of the often beautiful countryside close to London.

This was not because Tories were environmentalist before environmentalism was invented, but because they realised more than 80 years ago that their voters liked the rural idyll (even in what was effectively outer suburbia) and would always vote against those who pledged to destroy it…”

  7. as much as I love the woods the species will survive even if we have to go to Caves of Steel.

  8. Peter –

I am a Greenie and not at all in denial about it. I just don’t share the ethics, politics or hypocrisy of many other so-called Greenies.

I’ve noticed that many of them are also in favour og no borders, or mass immigration at the least. You cannot be an environmentalist and also be in favour of immigration on any signifocant scale.

Land is a finite resource. The physical and psychological wellbeing which comes from the countryside and green spaces is precious. But where do these Greenies think all the newcomers are going to live? Do they think they won’t need homes, cars and energy?

Deep down they know they are hypocrites. Therefore their environmentalism is either a virtue signal or they in it for political reasons (i.e. to advance a radical left wing agenda) and not environmental reasons.

  9. Strong comment.

If you support preserving the remaining, wonderful green land of Britain, how can you be in favor of large scale immigration to a place that already has a lot of people in it

  10. How many of the ATW community, actually have electric vehicles, or full Hybrid motors?

    Precisely?

I do, just in case you were wondering, and I believe Global Warming is total bollocks.

It’s purely down to Benefits in Kind tax reasons. Nothing else.

  11. So they underestimated by over 50% the number of EU migrants. Its reasonable to conclude there are similar numbers of non EU migrants living under the radar as well. I’ve been saying this for years. The NHS and housing supply are probably completely adequate for a population of 65 million. However my contention is our population is not 65 million but around 80 million. And has been for years. This “revelation ” is just more proof.
