ON LIBERTY…..WHO NEEDS IT?

By ATWadmin On December 17th, 2006 at 9:24 am

Here’s an interesting question for you all to consider..

"What if the part of human nature which wants paternalism, or maternalism, in the State is sometimes, or often, stronger than the part that wants freedom and self-determination?

What if we are wrong to imagine, as Bush claims, that an aspiration for freedom lives in the hearts of all mankind? What if that aspiration is a simple error of a uniquely American culture, which combined northern European Calvinism which rejects any hierarchy in church or in life; a personal relationship with God; Lockeian liberalism; a distinctly northern European moral code in which honor, reliability, hard work, and integrity are the measure of a person; a frontier attitude which expects life to be which expects life to be difficult but remains optimistic, and an innate distrust of government and politicians – is a very strange brew…."

I think that this excellent contribution by Dr Joy Bliss is well worth a read, and for what it’s worth I think that her "what if" may in fact be a "what is"…..

News from the bunker

By ATWadmin On December 17th, 2006 at 3:04 am

tony-blair.jpgWhat are we to make of the latest “damaging leak” from No. 10? The first thing we must bear in mind is that that there are two types of leak: authorised and unauthorised. Those responsible for the latter generally find themselves hunted down ruthlessly, out of a job and/or prosecuted, wheras what we have here is merely a press release via the back door. That being the case, it would be wise to regard everything in the memo as for our consumption.

Is it really the case that Labour are all in a tizzy over Cameron’s “resurgent” Tories? There are reasons why they would want to paint the Conservatives as the favourites, for one thing it focuses the mind of back-benchers in marginal seats and the party faithful, but not only is the next election some years away (one assumes), due to the electoral system the Tories would now need an unprecedented landslide to take power, so even a grossly unpopular Labour Government stands a good chance of winning.

Whatever the case, the memo reveals a Government with no agenda other than keeping their greedy snouts in the trough, who have never grasped that there is a difference between spinning stories for the media and effectively governing a country.

It’s all for your own good

1984.jpgIf you’re wondering why your local Accident and Emergency ward is facing closure, look no further than two of this foul Government’s actions. Firstly, their Private Finance Initiative policy, which enables them to conceal huge amounts of public debt, but costs the tax payer and the NHS dearly, and secondly the most expensive computer system ever before devised.

As with so much of this Government’s plans, it involves collecting data on each one of us, and reads as if culled from Orwell’s most fevered dystopian nightmares. The Government’s “Patients Czar”(?) declares that everyone’s records will be compulsorily included, notwithstanding the gross violation of our confidentiality this involves, unless you can prove (how?) the inclusion will cause “substantial mental distress.”

“Substantial mental distress”? It is not enough that you don’t want your records available to all and sundry, you must be driven to the point of mental breakdown by the very thought. Perhaps marching side by side will be another law where someone suffering “substantial mental distress” can be dragged off and thrown in a padded cell.

How long before we will be required to submit for our microchip insertion? Another term in power should do it.

In extremely poor taste

By ATWadmin On December 16th, 2006 at 5:08 pm

Did anyone hear Sacha Baron Cohen at the British Comedy Awards this week? He mentioned Borat having to dash off to the holocaust denying conference in Iran. (A timely and important joke drawing attention to this hatefest – in which Ahmadinejad accused Iranian student demonstrators protesting the event of being ‘americanised’. Surely a fine tribute and a kick in the teeth to those hard-line lefties who think America represents the ‘great satan’. You can read the sick joke of an agenda here replete with its recitation of the ‘holy’ quaran and welcome message from Mr Armageddon himself)

Speaking of ‘what were they thinking’ moments.  Contrast Baron Cohens clever remarks with Oliver Stone’s at the same comedy awards event. They were met with disbelief and jeers.  Taking the stage, he quipped: “It’s great to be back in England. I feel like Jack The Ripper days are back. Nothing ever changes here.”

Realising his joke had bombed, Stone sneered: “You’re a lovely crowd.”

One audience member said: “If he was trying to be funny, then he failed. To make a joke like that when five young women have been murdered and the killer is still on the loose was in unbelievably bad taste.”

The world is going to hell in a handbasket, i swear.

humbling

By ATWadmin On December 16th, 2006 at 3:57 pm

Corporal Bryan Budd, 3rd Battalion Parachute Regiment, was killed in Afghanistan on 20 August 2006 . He was leading his section when a planned element of surprise was lost.

"In order to regain the initiative, Corporal Budd decided to assault the enemy and ordered his men to follow him. As they moved forward the section came under a withering fire that incapacitated three of his men. The continued enemy fire and these losses forced the section to take cover. But, Corporal Budd continued the assault on his own, knowing full well the likely consequences of doing so without the close support of his remaining men. He was wounded but continued to move forward, attacking and killing the enemy as he rushed their position. Inspired by Corporal Budd’s example, the rest of the platoon reorganised and pushed forward their attack, eliminating more of the enemy and eventually forcing their withdrawal. Corporal Budd subsequently died of his wounds, and when his body was later recovered it was found surrounded by three dead Taliban.

Truly humbling.

He was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously last week.  The Ministry of Defence has announced another 132 awards, covering operations all round the world by all three services, for the period 1 April to 30 September 2006. It includes the Military Cross awarded to Private Michelle Norris who without pausing for a second to consider her own safety, jumped on to the turret of a Warrior to aid the badly-injured vehicle commander as a sniper fired at her.

Heroes every one.

ATW SATURDAY NIGHT BRAINTEASER….

By ATWadmin On December 16th, 2006 at 2:54 pm

Right. Sit up and pay attention. Aileen has set you another puzzle for this (cold) Saturday evening – hopefully working it out will generate some mental heat…

In the city of Enigmamia every person is either a saint (every statement is the truth)or a sinner (every statement is a lie). One night, two robbers managed to break into the Enigmamia Central Bank.

Five men were brought to the police station for questioning. It was certain both robbers were present.
To narrow the field, each man was individually interrogated about the identities of the robbers. The results were:
Alex: 1. At most one of Bill and Eddy is guilty. 2. Dave is guilty.
Bill: 1. Both Alex and Carl are guilty. 2. Eddy is not guilty.
Carl: 1. At least one of Dave and Eddy is guilty. 2. Bill is not guilty.
Dave: 1. Exactly one of Alex and Bill is guilty. 2. Carl is guilty.
Eddy: 1. Neither Carl nor Dave is guilty. 2. Alex is guilty.
Which two suspects robbed the bank?  And show your working out ….

“….And it’s Brazil-14…..England-0

By ATWadmin On December 16th, 2006 at 2:10 pm

Had a chatter with my eldest brother regarding the organisational triumph which was the German hosting of the FIFA World Cup, and the possibilities of seeing the superstars of Brazil hosting their own tournament in 2014, as I posted on my own site earlier. Apart from one unfortunate glitch when the Germanic host nation stipulated that only MasterCard credit card payments would be acceptable for ticket purchase, brought on by a sponsorship deal with that particular Company, speedily sorted out when it was quietly explained to our German friends that “Befehl ist Befehl” wasn’t a commonly accepted financial ruling, especially when over ninety-seven percent of the payments were thought to be made on-line through credit card arrangements!

As I had registered for my brother, who is the family sports-nut-case, but failed to gain tickets in any of the lotteries run for the Games, he was talking about the possibility of pre-registering for the Brazilian World Cup tournament; and also wondering how much the tickets might cost. I told him that as they had just sent in the ‘Letter of Intent’ and there wasn’t even a decision, never mind a website, it may be a little premature!

However, I was able to tell him that the South African World Cup 2010 ticket site was said to be doing brisk business, with one strange, but typical, Third World addition:

the South Africans were paying people to come to their Tournament!

s a logo 2.jpgUpdate:-  There are discussions on-going regarding the logo used by the South Africans, as it has been argued that the logo should be made larger, as the wording is incomplete, as it should be reading:-

South Africa…..Alive with possibilities of murder, rape, armed robbery,  car-jacking, AID’s and HIV, lawlessness and general mayhem!

Channel Four(k) Off!!

By ATWadmin On December 16th, 2006 at 12:43 pm

As I look out of the window I see blue skies and positivity all around me.  I wonder if it’s because I’ve just read that the Islamic grim reaper, who was to grace our Christmas Day TV screens at the same time as HM Queen, had decided to withdraw.  If only thousands of other Muslims had decided to ‘withdraw’ then Bradford would not be saddled with one of the highest birth and infant mortality rates in the UK…..but that’s another story.

At the last census 71% of the population designated themselves ‘Christian’.  This is a Christian country, not a secular one!  It is only right that our Head of State should have the sole privileged position of delivering a grateful and Christian message to the nation.  That position should not be sullied by the abomination that is Left-wing ideology – an ideology determined to undermine the cultural and ethnic predominance of this body politic.

If there is one thing I hate more than those Muslims who want to hurl their obsessive theologies into the fabric of our nation, it’s the Lefties who wait ever-ready to facilitate them.  Channel 4 is ‘committed to having’ a Muzza deliver the alternative Christmas (not ‘Xmas’) .  Why?  They are still a tiny minority of the population here notwithstanding their bonk-a-thon designs on demographic advancement.  Would Nigeria, with its Christian minority, allow a minister to give an alternative message on NTA during Ramadan?  Would Tunisia (for all its relative enlightenment and interest in western culture) permit a Rabbi to broadcast a Jewish message to the country’s Jewish minority on ERTT2 in the middle of Eid?  No!

Channel 4 is the Left wing facilitator of uncompromising Islam.  What other purpose does it serve?  Admittedly it brings us Countdown, but that’s about it.  When it is not in news competition with Auntie Beeb to see which one can progress further to the Left, it bring us ‘comedies’ such as Friends and Everybody Loves Raymond which, like most US sit-coms, is about as funny as the last stages of bladder cancer.   I hope the Muzza has zero ratings for Christmas Day.

LEGALISE PROSTITUTION?

By ATWadmin On December 16th, 2006 at 11:09 am

Let’s get one thing straight. The serial murders of five prostitutes in Sussex is deeply troubling and a terrible fate to befall these poor women. The thought that a serial killer is operating in this area must be very concerning to ALL people and represents a major challenge to the local police.

But I do NOT agree with those such as Matthew Parris writing in The Times today that somehow it is "our" fault these women have been killed and that the solution is to legalise prostitution. Liberal rubbish. The reason these women are dead is because a lunatic has killed them and 100% responsibility lies entirely with the person who has carried out the alleged grizzly strangulations.

To then turn around and twist these events into a reason for legalising prostitution is equally foolish. Whilst I accept that prostitution has always been around, and that no law can really eradicate it, I also believe it is a most demeaning lifestyle to all involved and that society would do better to send a clear message that both prostitutes and those who use them will be punished under the law of the land. It seems that the police around Ipswich knew who these prostitutes were but permitted them to ply their trade with impunity. It is so sad that someone’s daughter ends up selling her body, especially when what meagre earnings she obtains are then used to fuel drug dependency. But the best answer to this problem is to for our society to show ZERO TOLERANCE towards illegal drugs and Prostitution. I fear it lacks the moral will to do either.

WOULD CHRIST BAN CHRISTMAS?

By ATWadmin On December 16th, 2006 at 11:01 am

I can’t help but wonder when you stand back a little and observe just how commercial, trashy, godless and greedy the Christmas period has become if Christ would not wish it banned?

After all, the contemporary reason for this holiday has got virtually nothing to do with celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ all those centuries ago. In our modern secular godless culture, we have morphed Santa into being "the reason for the season" and now we even limit Santa since we don’t want to offend Allah and his particular band of followers.

I recall back as a child Christmas meaning carols in church, a very limited number of presents for which we were very grateful, and a certain magic. Now it is one gross bacchanalian feast – all sense of Christianity having been carefully filleted out of it. I am sad at the state it has fallen into – and the more "in your face" it becomes, the greater the level of insult to the person whose birth we are supposed to celebrate.
