It’s all going a bit Pete Tong for ol’ Hopenchange, isn’t it?

“Barack Obama has been embroiled in a cronyism row after reports that he intends to make Louis Susman, one of his biggest fundraisers, the new US ambassador in London. The selection of Mr Susman, a lawyer and banker from the president’s hometown of Chicago, rather than an experienced diplomat, raises new questions about Mr Obama’s commitment to the special relationship with Britain. American commentators denounced the selection of a rich friend to the plumb post, regarded as one of the most prestigious in the president’s gift, as worthy of a “banana republic”.

In a way, this is a non-story. “Politician pays off rich friend” – quelle surprise! They ALL do that, as we know. But since Obama has made such a big deal of the hope and change he was going to bring, and now we can see that it is just more of here comes the new boss, same as the old boss, it seems only fair to point this out.

  1. Actually, Obama was asked whether his presidency would mean an end to giving plumb jobs like this to high rolling donors. He said no.

  2. So, no hope and change?

Well considering he said there wouldnt be and that has now manifested itself then obviously no.

  3. No change indeed.

I’ve always opposed the practice of giving ambassadorships to crooks who give donations.

And I use the word crooks intentionally. You would think that it is illegal to buy such a post, and that is what has happened again and again and again….

Susman and Obama should be indicted! And all the past presidents who sold offices for campaign cash, etc.

  4. FDR and old Joe Kennedy? I agree though Phantom. Ok, Shirley Temple Black, a fine person BTW, to some African country. But we need trained people in important posts. Or is that the point?

  5. This is why it’s good to have an honours system, in the UK when political parties reward donors they dish out knighthoods and OBEs etc. It’s a grubby business but gongs don’t actually matter whereas ambassadorships do.

  6. True, but a decent number of the knighthoods and OBEs go to people who have actually done things.

We give ambassadorships to criminals who funnel money to politicians.

Like Charles said, if the posting is to some bullshit country, who cares – give the job to a potted plant for all I care.

But Ambassador to the UK is an important position. It should not go to a cash-bundling gangster from Chicago. Giving the job to Susman is an insult to both the people of Britain and those of the United States.

  7. Can a host country refuse to accept a chosen Ambassador. What is the diplomatic protocols on such an eventuality ?

  8. Colm

    Absolutely.

A host can expel any diplomat including the ambassador.

The UK would have too good manners to consider doing this to the US, but yes you would have every right under international precedent.
