Well, he may have presided over the MOST shameful period in living memory as Mr Speaker BUT….

The former Commons Speaker, Michael Martin, has had his controversial peerage quietly confirmed – in the middle of the Parliamentary recess. He will take up the title of ‘Baron Martin of Springburn, of Port Dundas in the City of Glasgow’ after the honour was conferred by the Queen last week.Mr Martin was the first Speaker of the House of Commons to be forced to resign in more than 300 years.

Bestowing an honour on the dishonourable shows the decadence of our political system. Her Majesty SHOULD have refused.  This is Gordon Brown paying back Gorbals Mick at OUR expense.

  1. True to form. There’s nothing an old class warrior loves more than a bit of ermine. All together now:

The working class can kiss my arse, I’ve got the foreman’s job at last …

  2. I’m out of work, I’m on the dole, so stuff your red flag up yer hole.
from citizen smith? Showing your age there Pete.

  3. All former Speakers of the House of Commons are made Lords, regardless of their performance.

"Bestowing an honour on the dishonourable shows the decadence of our political system."

Having an unelected House of Lords shows the decadence of British Democracy, not just incorrectly letting people into it.

    "Her Majesty SHOULD have refused."

Another example of the decadence of British Democracy. The Queen shouldn’t have a say in anything. She should sit there, shut up and wave. That is all. If she does anything remotely political then it would cause a constitutional crisis. In theory she has the power but if she put it into practice I’d imagine it wouldn’t take too long before she lost her theoretical power.
