It looks like everyone’s been shopping, or whatever it is that people do on a Saturday. Have yourselves an Open Thread then. In a nod to what I’ll be doing soon, it’s an Open Thread decorated with the Hochdorf drinking horn, dated to 530BC. Found in a Celtic grave (this is a grave reconstruction; clearly he has everything necessary for life in the Otherworld) in what’s now Germany, it could hold almost ten pints of what I suppose was mead. Now that’s a man’s horn.

Tell us what you know –

I would not mind digging something like that up on one of my metal detecting trips.

  2. It’s a very impractical shape for a vessel holding ten pints, you can’t really rest it and downing it in one would be ambitious.

I should think it makes it difficult to smoke at the same time as well 😉

  4. It looks very practical to me. Check the shoulder strap. The skinny end is behind you, the business end curling round in front and you can rest your arm on it. What better way for a man to hold his ten pints?

  5. Ten pints Pete?

That means you would be drinking outside the ‘state approved’ guidelines 😉

Don’t let the NHS know, they will refuse to treat you.

  6. Police and central intelligence agencies from Britain & France, (including Interpol) are seeking the identities of several Chelsea football fans who chanted racist slogans, and pushed a black man back onto the platform on the Paris metro.

Politicians from both countries have said the video is the most shocking and disgusting thing they have ever seen, and that every resource will be brought to bear to bring these world criminals to justice.

Words like ivory towers and fiddling while Rome burns, spring to mind.

  7. Bernard- there have been a lot of overreactions to alleged racist incidents, but abusing people on public transport is still obnoxious and loutish behaviour that should be dealt with.

  8. Bernard –

If the police and BBC devoted a fraction of the resources to the racial raping and sexual enslavement of thousands of British girls, as they are to one minor racist act by four Chelsea fans, things might improve here in our own country.

  9. Bernard

They will be hunted down like dogs, the full force of the law will come down on them like a tonne of bricks. there will be no mercy for them ..

  10. A more outrageous example of the overreaction to racism in football was that bloke who got sent to prison for two months for saying offensive things on Twitter about Francis Muamba after he had a heart attack.

If you look at any local newspaper it can be seen that many serious violent assaults don’t end up with that much prison time.

  11. I wonder why it’s called the BBC ‘WORLD’ service?

Elsewhere, across the web, real World newscasters focus on Ukraine and Greece.
But our raddled-old-aunt thinks that 3 braindead east Pakistani school girls, who have gone to the middle east to be de-flowered by a kalashnikov, are of far greater importance.
    pip pip…

  12. http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/david-cameron-chelsea-racist-paris-5185910

Prime Minister David Cameron has described the actions of Chelsea supporters who appeared to racially abuse a black commuter as he tried to board a train in Paris as “extremely disturbing and very worrying”.

Prosecutors in Paris have stated that any Chelsea fans found guilty of racial abuse face a possible three-year jail sentence and €45,000 (£33,160) fine.

I’m just comparing this to the decades-long policy of providing white girls for mass rape in English cities, and the reaction to the ‘discovery’ that such a policy was/is in place.

  13. I knew the comparison would be made between the exaggerated reaction to the Paris incident and Rotherham. It’s a fair but not exactly equal comparison.

  14. From BBC News:

“Relatives of the three missing London girls believed to be heading to Syria have pleaded for them to come home. Shamima Begum, 15, Kadiza Sultana, 16, and an unnamed 15-year-old friend travelled to Turkey on Tuesday. It is feared they may be planning to join Islamic State extremists in Syria. Shamima’s family said they understood she wanted to help those suffering but said Syria was “a dangerous place”. Kadiza’s family said they were “feeling completely distressed”.

The first sentence is misleading, but you have to read down to realise that only two of the three families have made this plea. The third is (so far) silent, implying either consent or approval for their 16 year old daughter’s decision to become a brood mare for jihadist head-choppers.

  15. Any son of a bitch who racially abuses anyone should be condemned, and I wouldn’t look down on anyone who punched such a person in the nose, but the possibility of three year jail terms or €45,000 fines for such offenses are themselves an offense against any notion of justice.

  16. It is feared they may be planning to join Islamic State extremists in Syria.

I think them going to ISIS is fine. My fear is that they return pupped up and ready to drop even more muslims on us.

Colm – why should the comparison NOT be made? In the Paris disaster, a black man was kept off a train though I’m sure that he got the next one. In the minor incident of Rotherham and other English cities, thousands of white girls were raped by ‘enrichers’. And the reactions……?

  18. Update on the three would-be jihadist brood mares: The family of the third girl (age 15, not 16) has now gone public with the other two and urged her to return home. Better late than never.

The incident in Paris garnered a lot of media coverage because it was filmed. Had it simply been reported it wouldn’t have been a big story. The news channels had a clip to show (over and over) and in our 24hour news cycle that’s what they will do.

I think a more accurate comparison would be the excessive attention being paid to those 3 would be Jihadi girls and the ‘worries’ over their safety by the authorities and politicians in comparison to the less urgent attention paid to the abuses in Rotherham.
