Further to Andrew’s post, I wanted to add my voice of disgust at the decision taken by our "British" Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, that proposals to fly the Union flag every day on public buildings are set not to apply to Scotland. Alex Salmond, the First Minister of the Scottish Assembly and Ian Paisley’s new best pal puts it more succinctly when he says "Britishness went bust long ago in Scotland". Brown is actively colluding in the break-up of the United Kingdom. Either Scotland is British or it is not. Salmond, like all good little nationalists, is clear that he wants Scotland out of the UK. That’s his call and I respect it, though don’t agree. But Brown is posing as a champion of the Union whilst facilitating Scotland to become entirely separate. That’s what makes him a fraud, a gross hypocrite and a betrayer of the very office he holds. Labour is all about breaking up the United Kingdom, making us smaller, less substantial, more divided. They are hateful anti-British ideologues who need thrown out of office.

  1. David… are english people English first or British? The same question as regards the scots?

I think this is the problem. Nationalism is such a powerful force and it is very difficult to sustain two (quite distinct nationalities) at the sname time… one will always triumph (at the noteable expense of the other).

Part of the problem is that ‘britishness’ really can’t be defined. Its more geographic than political or cultural…

  2. Gordon Brown is only interested in getting the English to feel more British, so that they don’t notice how brazenly they are discriminated against by the devolution settlement.

  3. Labour is all about breaking up the United Kingdom, making us smaller, less substantial, more divided.

At the minute Brown is petrified with that logical result of the devolution project the one he personally championed in the 90s. Give the SNP/Plaid Cymru/SF/DUP an Assembly and they’ll be satisfied with that and work the system the way Brown wants it?
    Don’t think so.

Salmond is no fool, his alliance with Paisley is a masterstroke for example; he’s pushing to make Westminster an irrelevance and when he achieves that, the steady production line of Labour Mps from both Wales and Scotland will dry up.

    And replaced with whom?
    "Call Me Dave the Separatist"?
Who this week has pushed for "English Votes on English Matters", which, if passed, will weaken the UK even further?

Unionists in N. Ireland, Scotland and Wales should no be pushing for Independence referendums in their respective countries.
Once these deliver the inevitable resounding "No", then we can get back to strengthening the tied which unite us rather than constantly being on the defensive.

  4. Last paragraph should read:

Unionists in N. Ireland, Scotland and Wales should now be pushing for Independence referendums in their respective countries.

Once these deliver the inevitable resounding "No", then we can get back to strengthening the ties which unite us rather than constantly being on the defensive

  5. The real reason Labour created the Welsh assembly and the Scottish parliment, is because `they’ thought when ever Labour lost power in Westminster; they would still have power in Scotland and Wales. As Labour consider people there would always vote in Labour for their parliment. And from Scotland and Wales Labour could always make mischief for westminster.
But Labour’s bloody stupid medling has backfired on them…

  6. David

The last thing Brown wants is an independent Scotland. That would put Labour into near-permanent oppsoition in Westminster, given that the Tories will usually win a majority of the English seats.

The whole idea of devolution was to keep Scotland in the union. It remains to be seen if it will succeed in achieving that objective.

  7. I’m British down to my bootstraps but England will only be able to defend itself from NuLab’s onslaught when it is released from the shackles imposed on it by Scotland, and its cabal of Labour MPs.

It is absolutely vital for us all that England rid itself of the Scottish Raj. Brown goes, and so do the rest of the chancers that surround him.

  8. Gordon Brown doesn’t give a stuff about England, or Britain.

When he was an ordinary Scottish MP he signed the declaration of the “Scottish Claim of Right”. This document was a public oath committing those who took it to put the interests of the people of Scotland before all other considerations.

i.e. "We, gathered as the Scottish Constitutional Convention, do hereby acknowledge the sovereign right of the Scottish people to determine the form of Government best suited to their needs, and do hereby declare and pledge that in all our actions and deliberations their interests shall be paramount."

and this is from the "British" Prime Minister. If that doesn’t state his position clearly enough, I don’t know what will!

  9. Brown is a fraud, a gross hypocrite and a betrayer of the very office he holds.

No! They are hateful anti-English ideologues who need ejecting from England!
