Looks like women need to stop drinking red wine!

“Women who drink even one small glass of wine a day are increasing their risk of developing certain forms of cancer by six per cent, Oxford University researchers found. This means that around 7,000 cases of cancer in women in the UK are caused by them drinking just one alcoholic drink a day, the study revealed. Around 5,000 of these cases are related to breast cancer but others are cancers of the rectum, liver, mouth and throat. For women who drink one drink, calculated as a small 125ml glass of wine, the risk of cancer increased by six per cent by the time they reached 75 years of age.”

I don’t believe a word of this. Naturally all the health nazis jump on the bandwagon – telling women that they need to stay away from el vino collapso. I recall other “research” indicating that drinking red wine was good for you, now it’s going to kill you. It’s enough to drive you to drink! I’d sooner call time on the sensationalist health nazis.

  1. Being alive is the biggest cause of cancer. Someone should tell that to these ‘researchers’.

  2. HRT was good for you, then bad for you, then badder yet and not to be prescribed. After a while it became ok again but I think I read somewhere that it is bad for you afterall. They don’t know, just like climate change they don’t know and should therefore just shut up.

  3. Remember butter. For years, my mother only had margarine in the refrigerator. Now, it turns out margarine is worse than butter.

Salt? Always the big villian. Sugar…bad, bad. Now wine?

I don’t believe any of this any more.

I think journalists, who don’t understand science, simply scan scientific studies, grab a conclusion they can work with, not caring if they even understand the study, and then try to scare people. To grab attention. And, I guess, to sell.

I think this is absolutely true – and you only have to look at the activities of some of the papers to see the harm that they have done – MMR being a case in point.
Ben Goldacre on The Guardian is fantastic on this – and has pricked many a bubble. It is a must read.

I saw a very good quote from him somewhere recently, about the Daily Mail being on a mission to divide all the substances in the world into those that cure cancer and those that cause it.

The annoying thing though is that even broadsheet newspapers with perfectly competent science editors don’t seem to run scientific news stories past those editors to see if they ring true.

  6. I can certainly remember about a year ago that red wine was declared efficacious because it contained anti-toxicants that mopped up harmful free radicals.
Then coffee became the bete noire because it did the opposite.
Tea and members of the brassicae family have so far escaped the censor, so instead of sugar in your tea, just drop in a couple of sprouts.

Are you related to ‘Typhoo’ by any chance?

Glad you have found your spiritual home here ;o)

  9. Why thank you. This is my current obsession – I dare say I will get bored and slow down soon.
What I find interesting is seeing what people from the opposite end of the political spectrum have to say. I don’t agree with a word of the posts, but it is better to have your views challenged and force you to think about things.

  10. Show me a longitudinal study of a 20,000 cohort over a 20 year time scale , then I MAY study the claim seriously . Other wise … bollocks .
    Sorry for the language .
