President Trump coincidental announcement that he favors Israel’s annexing of the Golan Heights has nothing to do with Israel’s election, an election he claims to have not really been aware of. I see, said the blind man.
Is it a greater gift for Bejamin Netanyahu whose facing criminal indictments and a close election, or for Vlad “No Shirt” Putin who would like some justification for annexing neighbors?
Trump’s announcement flies in the face of International Law, UN Security resolutions (which the US voted for) and common sense. No one is going to dislodge Israel’s defacto control of the area, but to suggest dejure recognition can only serve to increase tensions in a manner that is as unwise as it is unjust.
While I generally believe Trump is unaware of many international matters, his ignorance is breathtaking in its scope, the claim he doesnt know much about the pending election in Israel is a whopper of a lie…even for him.
Blatant political manipulation of serious matters for short term political gain is a dangerous thing.

  1. Just send Jared in to resolve it with the greatest deal of all time before lunch.

Trump really is an imbecilic ignoramous on matters of foreign policy.

  2. I’ve actually been to the Golan Heights. Not too many people there, windy.

It’s right by Syria of course. You look right into Syria. I asked an Israeli soldier about the situation there, and he said that while the Syrians didn’t love the Israels at all, they had kept the peace. There were no incidents.

The Golan is essential to Israel’s security. That’s not up for debate by any serious person. Israel will keep it, end of.

But that doesn’t justify this move. This move doesn’t help Israel’s security. It doesn’t help America in any way. It harms whatever’s left of America’s reputation in the Arab and Muslim world.

It is hugely transparent attempt to aid Crooked Bibi in the last days before an election.

And it helps Crooked Trump shore up his base with Doomsday Evangelicals in America. It will greatly please Sheldon Adelson, who finances much of Trump’s political activities.

A good leader tries so hard not to make the unnecessary error, not to make any commitment that is inconsistent with larger goals.

Trump is not a good leader. He’s not doing this with America’s interests in mind. It’s tactical, not strategic. He’s doing it for himself, only.

  3. The Golan is essential to Israel’s security. That’s not up for debate by any serious person. Israel will keep it, end of

I don’t know if that’s a reasonable argument Phantom. I’ve read that the GH are a ‘buffer zone’to attacks on Israel but attacks from whom? The Israeli soldier already told you that the Syrians had kept the peace (despite having part of their territory unilaterally annexed in 1981) so where are the attacks coming from? Lebanon and Jordon both border Golan but also have borders proper with Israel.

If a buffer zone is needed, and I’m not sure that’s the case in light of what you’ve said above, would it not be logical to create a 30km buffer zone within Israel proper rather than further antagonise an exceptionally delicate situation by annexing and occupying the territory of another Arab country?

And besides, isn’t a similar (IMO incorrect) argument made by Russia regarding Ukraine and supposed European expansionism?

  4. When the Golan was controlled by Syria, there were a number of rifle, mortar, rocket attacks on Israeli farming communities in the lowlands, some of them deadly.

    It was dangerous.

  5. Yes, but that was in 1967. Things change and as the soldier said to you, the Syrians ‘had kept the peace. There were no incidents’

There’s also the arguments regarding the buffer zone, (if needed), in Israel proper and the inconsistencies with condemning Russia’s antics in Ukraine while accepting Israel’s in Golan.

As I said, I’m not sure a reasonable argument can be made for continued occupation and annexation

  6. The Syrians kept the peace because they knew what would happen if they didn’t. Assad is a murderer, but he’s not stupid.

I’m not sure that there’s any injustice here. The locals, largely Arabic speaking Druze, get along fine in Israel.

Pre-1967, Assad allowed the PLO and others to use Golan as a base for deadly attacks. Ukraine has done no such thing against Russia. The two situations aren’t comparable.

  7. Let’s assume the occupation is necessary for security for bona fide defense purposes for argument’s sake. In my opinion that isn’t sufficient grounds for permanent and unilateral annexation.

  8. “Ukraine has done no such thing against Russia. The two situations aren’t comparable.”

But in law they are. The simple legal fact is that the Golan Heights are Syrian territory, captured in war, illegally annexed by Israel.

2 unanimous security council resolutions have confirmed that. The second was passed in 1981, when the UN Ambassador was Jeane Kirkpatrick, of the Kirkpatrick Doctrine fame, appointed by St Ronald.

So even Ronald Reagan’s administration voted to say that Israel’s actions there were illegal.

If you want to throw out the rule book on that then that opens up actions for say Russia. Because while the individual scenarios are different the law is the same. If you want to get rid of that law or not respect it then its a Pandora’s box type situation.

  9. I have zero problem with annexation. It’s probably a good thing.

My only point is that no intelligent US president would speak about it. It’s an unforced error by someone without any discipline.

  10. Israeli’s security concerns are of course real. But the occupation, like Israel’s other occupations, is about more than that. Israel is installing a Jewish population there (in contravention of international law, including treaties that Israel signed up to) and uses the heights to launch attacks against parties in the region that Israel doesn’t like, even if they are not posing any threat to Israel.

  11. 1967 was over fifty years ago and the PLO de facto no longer exist. If Assad isn’t stupid as claimed then there really is no need for the annexation of the heights because the Syrians will keep the peace ‘because they know what will happen’ buffer zone / annex or not?

Things change and I still can’t see any reasonable argument for ongoing annexation and occupation of the GH.

I have zero problem with annexation

That’s sound enough and honest but anexation is annexation regardless of the reasons for it and having no problem with one while condemning another knocks your credibility out of the park.

  12. I agree with Noel’s point about installing population there as wrong.

As for Syria keeping the peace it seems to run against their abilities in recent years.

  13. Get this:

Today an interviewer asked Mike Pompeo whether “President Trump right now has been sort of raised for such a time as this, just like Queen Esther, to help save the Jewish people from an Iranian menace”.

“As a Christian, I certainly believe that’s possible,” said Mr Pompeo, a former Kansas senator and CIA director.

“I am confident that the Lord is at work here,” he added.

    This exchange actually took place.

So, members of the US government that God “sort of raised” Trump for the present time.

BTW, does anyone know whether those Buy-your-way-into-college was around when Trump was a young man?

  14. I’ve heard about this ” Queen Esther ” god damned bullshit before in regards to Trump.

I’m disappointed in Pompeo, who is way too smart to be speaking like that. It’s boob-bait for the Bornies.

  15. Golan Heights is the high ground from there missiles can all to easily reign down on Israel
The value of the Golan HEIGHTS gives Israel something that is coveted in any form of warfare, the high ground. It stands directly between itself and Syria. By controlling the high ground, Israel has a nearly insurmountable advantage over Syria in any war and the same would be true in reverse.

This President has done a great job on foreign affairs especially in the ME we have shed useless treaties, we’ve demanded the freeloaders of NATO pay their bills we sanctioned russia and more importantly we are now a supply for fuel for anyone who doesn’t want to buy from and become a puppet of our enemies the russians or the islamists. Now idiot nations like germany can tie their whole countries future to the enemy but the rest of you don’t have to follow. Thanks to Trump.

Commenting on the Golan Heights does two things it strengthens Bibi’s hand which is good for US and it sticks a thumb in the eye of Iran just for fun. Iran who is building two more nuclear reactors to supply their weapons program.

Syria is a puppet state of Iran the Golan Heights belong to Israel it has been that way since the 6 day war it’s not going to change and the US has always supported Israel in this. The Arabs owe a great gratitude to Israel that they don’t claim all the land that is rightfully theirs.

Honest positions based in reality is what matters. Golan belongs to the Jews, the Jews are a United States Protectorate. If you attack Israel you’ve also picked a fight with the US.

This is how things are and how they will remain until WE say so….

  16. The US has voted in the UN against Israel on this issue, which is something that happens as often as Haley’s Comet.

  17. The US shouldn’t have voted against Israel on this thing, but Trump should have kept his pie hole shut also.

He can’t stop shooting his mouth off, ever.

  18. now is the time to make our stances clear as a country. We have Islamist representatives as well as commie ones speaking out against Israel on the news and in public so the president has to be very clear on our support for it.

  19. The Israelis have as much right to the Golan Heights as Russia does to Georgia, Ukraine etc… To recognise Israeli’s control over Golan and condemn Russia’s in Georgia and Ukraine is nothing more than rank hypocrisy.

  20. Golan was used as a base to attack Israel

It is a proper conquest of war

Georgia and Ukraine have never attacked Russia

This entire thing is framed by some in an anti Israeli haze

Borders changing by force are not always a bad thing – not by a long shot.

To everything there is a season.

  21. “It is a proper conquest of war”

Its not. In fact the concept is not actually lawful anymore. You cannot wage a war of conquest anymore. It is illegal. So when Israel did so that was illegal.

  22. The conquest is moral, just, good for Israel and good for regional stability.

    Let’s agree on that.

Let someone else debate what the UN thinks is legal.

  23. “The conquest is moral, just, good for Israel and good for regional stability.”

It is good for Israel. You got 1 out of 4. Can you explain the other three?

  24. It is self evident.

We saw what went on before 1967, and we’ve seen the peace since then. I saw if with my own two eyes.

Criticize Israel for everything else, but praise them for taking those heights.

  25. It is not self evident. If it was self evident then I would be able to agree with it. I am asking you to explain how it is moral, just, or good for regional stability.

  26. Here’s the difference Seamus….. Israel will NOT be annexed because they are backed by the United States who’s backing up Georgia and the Ukraine….. the ROI? lmao

If we don’t help them no one else can…..

  27. Israel is the one doing the annexing. They are the Russia in this scenario, not the Georgia or Ukraine. But you’ve been a great contestant. Thanks for playing.

  28. There is no need to change US policy on the Golan Heights. The current policy was working. Trump is doing a favor for his buddy Bibi. That is not a good reason to change US policy. In fact, it is probably not in US interest to change this policy. Israel needs a new leader and there is a good replacement for Bibi contesting him. The US should stay out of the impending Israeli election. And, the US needs to replace Holy Roller Pompeo.

  29. //Golan was used as a base to attack Israel

It is a proper conquest of war//

I presume someone told you that when you were there and you of course believed them.

What you won’t hear from Israelis there is that Israel was in fact guilty of most of the incidents in and around Golan before the 6-day war. It deliberately provoked Arab retaliation with a view to moving in and annexing territory and getting people like you naive enough to believe Israel was the innocent victim.

This has even been admitted by leading Israelis (apart from the bit about your naivety).

  30. And Ukraine will likely never get Crimea back. That is a simple fact. It is also morally wrong.

Wait till they take back Judea and Sumeria that’s also Israel….

  32. “Wait till they take back Judea and Sumeria that’s also Israel….”

Yip. Right up there with the Russians. Though you are a Trumper so they are now your mates as well I guess.

  33. Unlike you and the other brain dead here Seamus I follow the Russian/American relationship. It’s almost reached Cold War levels of tension.

You prove you’re not based in reality but in a fantasy of the left.

  34. Russia interfered in the US elections. But its ok because The Donald asked Vladimir about it and Vladimir said he didn’t do it. Case closed.

  35. Assad is a murderer.

He’s not really a puppet, his loyalty is to himself and to his tribe.

  36. Bibi campaigned for Trump in 2016, even more than Putin did, and much more openly.

Now the Don is returning the favour. It’s a bit like The Godfather.

  37. Spot on

I do a favor for you if you do a favor for me

The interests of the country have nothing to do with it.

  38. I wonder if it will backfire with Israeli voters. Undoubtedly many will lap it up but then many of them will likely have blindly backed Netanyahu anyway. The Trump announcement, the visit by Pompeo, the visit by Bibi to Washington in a fortnight, all combine to a not particularly subtle attempt to influence the Israeli election. I think there is as much chance of it hurting Netanyahu as it will help him.

  39. He’s probably more popular in Israel than he is in America. His international approval numbers are 27% approve, in America it is 42% approve, and in Israel it is 69% approve. That’s higher than any of his individual approval ratings in any US state (the highest is Wyoming on 64%).

  40. I think there is as much chance of it hurting Netanyahu as it will help him.

Maybe, but Bibi will have calculated that this will help him before giving the Don the go-ahead. And it probably will.

so where did Putin campaign for him? Putin gave Hillary a Phony Dossier and a few hundred MILLION, what did he give Trump?

  42. so where did Putin campaign for him?

    LOL

Putin’s goons hacked the DNC emails and Putin’s little helper at Wikileaks did the rest.

  43. “On October 7, 2016, the United States Department of Homeland Security and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence stated that the US intelligence community was confident that the Russian government directed the breaches and the release of the obtained or allegedly obtained material in an attempt to “… interfere with the US election process.”[61][6”

  44. “Trump–Russia dossier allegations

The Trump–Russia dossier contains several allegations related to the hacking and leaking of the emails. The individuals named have denied the allegations.

    The dossier alleges:

That Russia was responsible for the DNC email hacks[70][71][72] and the recent appearance of the stolen DNC e-mails on WikiLeaks,[70][73] and that the reason for using WikiLeaks was “plausible deniability”.[74] (Dossier, pp. 7–8)
That “the operation had been conducted with the full knowledge and support of TRUMP and senior members of his campaign team.”[75][74] (Dossier, p. 8)
That after the emails were leaked to WikiLeaks, it was decided to not leak more, but to engage in misinformation: “Rather the tactics would be to spread rumours and misinformation about the content of what already had been leaked and make up new content.”[76] (Dossier, p. 15)
That Trump’s foreign policy adviser Carter Page had “conceived and promoted” the idea of “leaking the DNC e-mails to WikiLeaks during the Democratic Convention” “to swing supporters of Bernie SANDERS away from Hillary CLINTON and across to TRUMP.”[77][78][79] (Dossier, p. 17)
That the hacking of the DNC servers was performed by Romanian hackers ultimately controlled by Putin and paid by both Trump and Putin..”

  45. the dossier is a fake created by the russians Peter……

    LOL

Putin’s goons hacked the DNC emails and Putin’s little helper at Wikileaks did the rest.

Please point to anywhere Mueller or any prosecutor as said this.

  46. Please point to anything which contradicts the Homeland Security assessment that the DNC email server leak was orchestrated by Putin in order to assist Trump’s election campaign.

  47. Homeland Security has NO IDEA who broke into the servers.

The DNC refused t turn them over to be investigated. They hired their own PRIVATE firm to examine them. The Government has NEVER examined them.

So Peter as usual you really have no clue what you’re talking about do you?
