It sickens me to read that….

" a formidable coalition of businessmen, politicians, religious leaders and community workers will pledge their support tonight for an amnesty for illegal immigrants who have been resident in the UK for several years and can pass strict tests to prove their contribution to British society. All four of London’s main mayoral candidates – including, against the official policy of his party, the Tory candidate Boris Johnson – will back the campaign to offer undocumented workers the chance to be integrated into mainstream society and obtain papers allowing them to work and pay taxes legally. In an unprecedented move that will exert even more pressure on the Government to heed calls for an amnesty, they will be joined by an array of influential figures from outside the political world, including Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, Dr Muhammad Abdul Bari, leader of the Muslim Council of Britain and Stephen O’Brien, one of the City’s leading businessmen."

Well, I say shame on them all for condoning these law-breakers! The Mayoral candidates are clearly pandering to London’s large numbers of illegal immigrants and sending a signal that it doesn’t matter of you break the law today because a few years later there is always the prospect of amnesty. You do not engender lawful behavior by condoning unlawful behavior, except in the minds of leftists.

Cardinal Cormac Murphy O’Connor has absolutely no excuse for joining in this immoral jamboree and should be singularly criticised for his folly.

  1. There might, just might be a case for an amnesty if it was accompanied by a firm legally binding pledge not to repeat it and if it was accompanied by a genuinely strict and fully implemented policy to enforce the immigration laws and controls in the future.

  2. From the article:

"Bishop Pat Lynch, a senior representative of Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor, said the Catholic Church backed the changes to reward immigrants who have proved their worth to British society. "We support an agreed pathway into citizenship for irregular migrants ," he said.

I hate this kind of Newspeak. Why not just call illegal aliens wandering troubadors?

  3. Well sod that. The government should implement the will of the people, which is to kick out the illegals. Superstitious sky pilots and greedy fatcat businessmen should butt out. Isn’t that right, liberals?

  4. "hate this kind of Newspeak. Why not just call illegal aliens wandering troubadors?"

My favourite euphemism is "Undocumented workers", as though the rest of us are walking round carrying bundles of documents all the time.

Yes, but it’s difficult to see how this proposal could get them more votes. The native population will resent an amnesty and the illegals won’t be on the electoral register.

I agree that amnesties just encourage more law-breaking. Kick them out.
