Life under lockdown was hard for all of us. From economic destruction to social isolation, the costs of restrictive government policies intended to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 have been steep. But now, yet another study suggests that the benefits wrought by our collective sacrifice were negligible at best—and that stay-at-home orders may even have increased overall mortality.

In a new paper, economists from the University of Southern California and the RAND Corporation examined the effectiveness of “shelter-in-place” (SIP) mandates, aka stay-at-home orders, using data from 43 countries and all 50 US states. The experts analyze not just deaths from COVID-19, but “excess deaths,” a measure that compares overall deaths from all causes to a historical baseline.

The authors explain that lockdown orders may have had lethal unintended consequences in their own right, such as increased drug overdoses, worsened mental health problems, increased child abuse, deadly delays in non-COVID medical care, and more. So, to find out whether stay-at-home orders truly helped more than they hurt, examining excess deaths, not just pandemic outcomes, is key.

The results aren’t pretty.

  1. There are a lot of such studies now. It’s increasingly difficult for anyone to maintain that lockdowns saved lives. They plainly did not.

  2. I don’t believe that Brazil had a national lockdown.

How are things working out down there?

  3. Precisely, listen to the experts.

    From Phantoms link.

“ Differences in the population size between different countries are often large. To compare countries, it is insightful to look at the number of confirmed cases per million people – this is what the chart shows.

Keep in mind that in countries that do very little testing the actual number of cases can be much higher than the number of confirmed cases shown here.”

  4. Deaths are deaths. Medical statisticians might not catch a recovered Covid patient but they’d be unlikely to miss a Covid caused death

You can’t trust any of the numbers out of say Russia or Congo, but Japan is a pretty sophisticated society and if they had the flood of Covid deaths that we saw in the the UK or US you’d think that they knew about it.

  5. Japan is obviously not that sophisticated it has an adequate health system….apparently?

  6. “ You can’t trust any of the numbers out of say Russia or Congo, but Japan is a pretty sophisticated society and if they had the flood of Covid deaths that we saw in the the UK or US you’d think that they knew about it.”

Do Japan record any death, even if from terminal illness, or hit by a bus as the actual cause of death?

Or do they record any death, no matter what the real cause of death if recorded a positive test within 28 days?

  7. Cumalative Covid deaths per 1 million population

    Canada 691
    US 1818
    UK 1889
    Brazil 2364
    Peru 5782

    Japan 113

    Taiwan 23.89

So, let’s be good bloggers and trash Japan

And you believe these numbers why ?

Is it your view they are accurate, honest, and true…. what are you basing your faith on ?

Because so far the trac record of ANYTHING they’ve told us about this outbreak has been shall we say less than precise….

They Politicized and lied about this Pandemic over the whole world.

No one except you believes a damn thing any government is saying about it Phantom. Why is it you do?

  8. If you don’t believe any government, or any government health authority, or any medical organization, or any doctor or scientist – then exactly who do you believe?

How would you compare the outcomes among countries?

  9. I wouldn’t compare them….. first off every country has handled this totally different, second they have lied from the beginning about the numbers of dead, they’ve lied to us about which medicine works and don’t work, they changed the safety parameters of masks from 4% to 94%, the lied about it’s origins and they were selective in enforcing.

Not one part of this Pandemic has been accurately explained or handled for the public Phantom.

It’s a very bad virus, it has killed millions and all the governments took advantage of it to increase their power.

The only thing I believe is Covid-19 is a very bad virus that if you are compromised in anyway may and I repeat MAY kill you.

I have a destroyed immune system my wife has no underlying conditions. When we caught it she wound up in the Hospital for several days and I did not. A friend that had a heart condition died, another friend with cancer that caught it was fine.,.,.

I can’t believe their numbers or anything they are saying because each day we find out that what they said wasn’t true, on the origins, the medicine, or the deaths.

It would be nice to be able to believe them and trust them, but they have given us no reason to trust them or believe them they abandoned the truth not us.

  10. You must compare the outcomes.

That’s one of the most fundamental tools of figuring out what works and what doesn’t.

In medicine, or in business, sports or anything else.

I’ve said before – successful organizations borrow every good idea that can from other organizations. Cities, states, countries and hospital systems included.

Hospitals are much better at treating Covid than they were in March 2020. That’s because they were always studying – and comparing themselves with – what others were doing across the US, UK, and world, all the time.

As infectious disease epidemiologists and public health scientists we have grave concerns about the damaging physical and mental health impacts of the prevailing COVID-19 policies, and recommend an approach we call Focused Protection.
