After some speculation, the White House has confirmed that CIA Director John Brennan was in Kiev over the weekend.

The White House is now confirming that CIA Director John Brennan visited Ukrainian capital Kiev over the weekend and met with high-ranked Ukrainian officials.

Deposed Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich had accused Brennan of ordering a crackdown on pro-Russian activists in the east of the country, reports RT.

“We don’t normally comment on the CIA director’s travel but given the extraordinary circumstances in this case and the false claims being leveled by the Russians at the CIA we can confirm that the director was in Kiev as part of a trip to Europe,” White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters.

To get the D/CIA on a flight to Kiev is big time and shows beyond all doubt how serious Washington is about getting its way over Ukraine. He doesn’t go anywhere just to give the CIA operatives a pep talk. With Moscow possily stirring it up in the east of the country things won’t be getting quiet there soon.

  1. With Moscow possibly stirring it up in the east of the country things won’t be getting quiet there soon.

Putin’s little helpers are hard at work, no “possibly” about it. I expect war, hopefully limited, but Ukraine will not survive with its present territory, and the question will then become, who’s next? The echoes with 1938 are chilling.

  2. Pete- so what is the actual meddling- major league meddling at that- going on here? All I see in the report you link to is that he had a meeting.

Meanwhile Russian specisl forces taking over government buildings, keeping 50000 troops on the bborder and killing in Eastern Ukraine is merely a possible sign of stiring things up?

The double standard in terms of evidence required for proof of foreign interference is so extreme as to seem almost a parody.

  3. Pete has effectively endorsed Putin Rule in Ukraine.

” Anything so long as the ” neo cons ” don’t prevail ” is his talking point.

  4. I cannot believe that some on this site can be so blinkered that they do not see what is actually occurring in Ukraine . There was no US ,EU UN politicians in Kiev giving support to “protesters ” , the film clips of them there must have been fabricated .
The people in eastern Ukraine are not protesters , they are labelled terrorist by the scum that deposed a legitimate government and their supporters , who are the true terrorists .
The new Hague doctrine is ” Nazis’ are good , Russians are bad ” . I suspect that this is the Kerry doctrine too . All of the Allied troops in W.W. II served and died in vain if now ” our” politicians betray their memory and sacrifice .
Remember the Ukrainians were enthusiastic followers of Hitler , even the S.S. were appalled by the cruelty of the Ukrainian guards . These are the same types that are rushing to eastern Ukraine so as to engage in Kiev sanction slaughter of civilians .

  5. Today, a US warship, USS Donald Cook, was sailing in the Black Sea when a Russian fighter flew past it, at about 1 km distance. Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren called this “a provocation”.

As for the meddling: all sides no doubt have their agents on the ground, but overall they probably don’t affect matters much. These things tend to have their own dynamics. There is, however, no doubt the Russian minority in E. Ukraine don’t want to be under direct rule from Kiev. No amount of agents can get so many ageing and angry housewives out on the streets.

  6. Things were relatively OK in Ukraine until the EU showed up with their association agreement. It was like waving a red rag to a deranged bull. No way was Russia ever going to let the Ukraine and the Crimea fall ever closer in to Economic and Political Union with the EU.

The whole thing has been a bloody shambles from ALL sides. I said once, that the EU and the West will get 50% of Ukraine and, Russia will get 50% of Ukraine. The Ukrainians will be allowed to have whatever is left.

The Ukrainians have allowed themselves to be used by both sides and will be the ultimate losers. Mark my words.

  7. If you were Ukranian, who’d you want to be linked to – the EU or Russia?

To me, its a no brainer – the EU is the way to go.

Provided that there is full respect for Russian language rights etc

  8. If you were Ukranian, who’d you want to be linked to – the EU or Russia?

Linked to? In the same way that Britain is “linked to” the EU from which over 70% of (pointlesss and idiotic) legislation originates. That isn’t “linked to”: that’s ‘ruled by’, and I don’t recall giving my consent to being ruled by Brussels.

There is no need for Ukraine to be linked to or ruled by anybody other than themselves and until the EU started meddling in the internal affairs of eastern slavs, that’s exactly how it was.

  9. Yes, I am certain that Putin wants all Ukranians to rule themselves.

Many Russians, including the late Solzhenitsyn, didn’t even regard Ukraine as a real country. They want control – which is at the source of all the many Russian – Ukranian disuputes in the post USSR era.

  10. Prior to the EU’s meddling on behalf of the Money Power which has stolen its gold, Ukraine ruled itself and was neither “linked to” nor ruled by anybody other than its own. Is this being disputed?

  11. To anybody who visits this site and doesn’t know the routine, it’s like this. Phantom engages me in debate for about two rounds of comments and then has to abandon when challenged by difficult facts as one sees above. It happens all the time and is the blogging equivalent of a defeated fleet blowing smoke to cover its disengagement after taking a beating. It’s pathetic, but that’s just the way it is.

  12. the American hater sees the CIA under his bed at night I’m sure.

There are Russian solders marching in the streets…. It’s the CIA’s fault.

    Your a maroon.

  13. Troll – do you know where Ukraine is? Do you know where it is relative to where the US is?

  14. Prior to the EU’s meddling on behalf of the Money Power which has stolen its gold

Oh grow up you blithering idiot.

Ukraine ruled itself and was neither “linked to” nor ruled by anybody other than its own. Is this being disputed?

It’s being disputed by anyway with even a cursory knowledge of the region. Ukraine under Viktor Yanukovych was a Russian client state.

  15. Allan do you know where the transmitter is that is beaming the microwaves into your head that have fried your mind?

  16. Troll – a great portion of the American population does not know where Ukraine is but it has been found that the further away each respondent believed Ukraine to be from its actual location, the greater their desire for ‘intervention’. Given your interventionist blood-lust, the question as to whether you have any idea where Ukraine is seems quite reasonable.

You have omitted the usual suggestion for me to get my ‘meds’ for some reason. Once again, given the huge proportion of Americans who take ‘meds’, it is quite reasonable to believe without contrary evidence that you are on them. Your posts on ATW support that assertion.

  17. well then I must know where it is don’t I since I have stated from the begining to let it go.

If you have paid attention which despite your preoccupation with imaginary cabals you usually do, my point has never been anything about trying to take russia’s port from it which is what the Ukraine is. It has been the question to all of you.

Now that the U.S. has after 60yrs stood down, who is going to step up?

Russia is a true aggressor state, so are several others in that half of the world. Who is going to keep them at bay? All the Western Nations of Europe together don’t have the manpower or more importantly the equipment.

The US was your guard dog, we were NATO, we are the only Western Nation with military capability other than nukes. We have removed ourselves from that side of the board.

    In other words your fucked.

  18. //Now that the U.S. has after 60yrs stood down, who is going to step up?//

At the moment, there is no need for anyone to “step up”. The West is not facing any serious, or even unserious, threat.

That may change in the future, but then things in the west will change too.
It’s also possible that the world is on the cusp of a new gold rush of consumerism that will sweep away old enmities, old religions and old politics.

  19. It is a black and white situation. Russian security/military are in Eastern Ukraine organizing the protests. It is a repeat of the annexation of Crimea. Interviews on TV with some natives shows them as little in touch with reality as Putin.

Putin cannot do a good job running Russia. Does he really think he will do better with more territory? Or is this a distraction from very big problems on the home front?

Meanwhile the Russian people are getting poorer quickly and Russia is increasingly isolated. And only minor financial measures taken so far, but more likely on the way.

If the CIA wanted to cause trouble they would be chatting with Chechens and others.

  20. Wait so the counter protests are backed and supported by external national actors but the maiden protests that toppled a government weren’t?

One is a disgraceful act of manipulated aggression but the other popular free-will, fully expressed?

Too much crack being smoked all round. All sides and actors in this affair are playing with fire. My only hope is that this is all performance art for the anniversary of 1914.

  21. If the CIA wanted to cause trouble they would be chatting with Chechens and others.

    Again?

  22. thank you troll.

Russia is a true aggressor state

Its the straight face that gets me. I have to hand it to you troll. You are ATWs very own John Bolton.

  23. thedoctor1

Your last paragraph is absolutely right. The concentration camps that the Nazi’s set up in the region were solely manned by Ukrainians.
A German report at the time said “They could be trusted to take to the task with considerable enthusiasm and dedication”.

I’m sure Putin is fully aware of what he’s up against.

  24. Back in the old days, millions of Ukrainians were killed through a starvation imposed on them by the communists – who happened to be almost entirely jews, as Putin himself confirmed. When the Germans rolled into Ukraine in 1941, ordinary Ukrainians got back at their murderers. The Russians seem to have thrown off the judeo-bolshevists and are even ridding themselves of the (jewish) oligarchy but Ukraine has now succumbed to its jewish oligarchy, and they have now seized power in a coup by overthrowing the elected President, and using ‘neo-nazis’ to do so.

In fact, communism in Ukraine was utterly dominated by Jews. Pavliuchenkov states that by the beginning of 1919, “the Soviet and Party organs created [in Western Ukraine] were wholly staffed by Jews.”[5] A report written by an official from the Food Department of the Moscow Soviet, following a visit to Ukraine in early 1919, recounted that “since everyone feels certain that all power is in the hands of the Jews, anti-Semitism is becoming even stronger amongst the population. Throughout the whole population the only thing one hears is that they ‘won’t bow to yid power.’”[6]

  25. Remember the Ukrainians were enthusiastic followers of Hitler , even the S.S. were appalled by the cruelty of the Ukrainian guards . These are the same types that are rushing to eastern Ukraine so as to engage in Kiev sanction slaughter of civilians .

Prior to the Nazi invasion, the Russians had been telling the Ukrainians how wonderful their new Nazi allies were, so it is hardly surprising that some of them looked on the Nazis as liberators against the perpetrators of the holodomor.
