Another small step forward. Provo Godfather Martin McGuinness has gone beyond the “established limits” of republican rhetoric by saying that IRA killings of innocent people could be described as murder. (Big of him, eh, “could be…”)  He said in an interview: “I accept that in the circumstances where innocent people lost their lives, it’s quite legitimate for the term murder to be used.”

His words represent a significant departure from the standard language used by Sinn Fein and the IRA, whose leaders have never before conceded that any IRA killings could be characterised as murder. The republican stance has been that IRA killings were carried out in the context of a legitimate “armed struggle”. Republican figures have in the past expressed regret for individual incidents and have on occasion described attacks as “wrong”. The IRA was responsible for about 1,800 of the 3,700 deaths of the Troubles in the North. In an interview, Mr McGuinness refused to describe the IRA killings of British soldiers as “wrong”. But he added: “The IRA were involved in quite a number of incidents which resulted in the accidental killing of innocent people and the term used by the relatives of those people who were killed was that they were murdered. I wouldn’t disagree with that.”

So, to summarise, since McGuinness now accepts the IRA were murderers, and he commanded them, that must make him the man who authorised murder. Can someone arrest him, please? Thanks.

  1. That’s big of Saint Martin.
What next the Nobel Peace Prize?
More like a free years subscription to Practical Lawnmowers Magazine.
The continued hypocricy of the ‘man’ beggars belief.

  2. As the song says..’keep spreading the news’. Martin keeps media attention on him for not very much while the other candidates can’t get a look in. Clever eh?

  3. He is getting plenty of negative media attention and his bloody fangs are starting to show. But it is early days, he needs to answer if his war was justified and what was achieved for all the destruction, then roll the trash back over the border.

Weres the fangs then NY’er? All media attention is good in this.

But it is early days, he needs to answer if his war was justified and what was achieved for all the destruction, then roll the trash back over the border.

Not really. Do you honestly think the shinners went in to this without expecting the media scrutiny, he’s been there done that and got the T shirt. No one thought Adams would leave w Belfast but that trash is firmly embedded in Louth, as for McGuinness as you say its early days, but he could be rolling into the Aras if the rest of the ‘trash’ candidates are anything to go by.

  5. I actually think after a decade of applause he is in shock that in a wider world context he isn’t winning by acclaim and having to face hostile (and fair) questions.

imv that is a misconception. Look at the fair questions thrown the way of Adams for Louth? Since travelling the path of politics rather than physical force these questions are fodder for any and all journalists and media. They knew what they were doing when they picked McGuinness rather than say someone like Michelle Gildernew

  7. JM –

What next the Nobel Peace Prize?

Yasser Arafat and Menachem Begin got their bloody hands on it so why not the psychopath McGuinness? I’d be more surprised if he never get the call.

  8. SF are not a normal democratic party peacefully canvassing for votes, rather they intimidate voters and ‘arrange’ benefits for groupies. Look carefully how Adams got votes in Louth, talk to people in the area and ‘heavy-handed’ will be a description you will hear in regard to SF election tactics.

It is expected that 10-15% of the voters in the Republic are loony terrorist supporters. For McGuinness to get a larger vote than that, he must explain why he and his gangsters foisted forty years of death and destruction on the Irish people.

kateyo seems to think SF are wise politically, but they cannot club the heads of 85-90% of the voters in the Republic as they do up North. And to a reasonably intelligent voter they offer nothing but lies, they are part of an ugly past they created and any sane person wants nothing to do with that or them.

  9. Its the south that SF aspire to but I don’t like the ‘vote early vote often’ strategy being applied here and I’ve been ‘off’ McGuinness since he was outed over McArdle.
