17.4m of us. His words echo across the centuries today. Cromwell speaking to  Parliament in April 1653.

“It is high time for me to put an end to your sitting in this place, which you have dishonored by your contempt of all virtue, and defiled by your practice of every vice. Ye are a factious crew, and enemies to all good government. Ye are a pack of mercenary wretches, and would like Esau sell your country for a mess of pottage, and like Judas betray your God for a few pieces of money.

Is there a single virtue now remaining amongst you? Is there one vice you do not possess? Ye have no more religion than my horse. Gold is your God. Which of you have not bartered your conscience for bribes? Is there a man amongst you that has the least care for the good of the Commonwealth? Ye sordid prostitutes have you not defiled this sacred place, and turned the Lord’s temple into a den of thieves, by your immoral principles and wicked practices?

Ye are grown intolerably odious to the whole nation. You were deputed here by the people to get grievances redressed, are yourselves become the greatest grievance. Your country therefore calls upon me to cleanse this Augean stable, by putting a final period to your iniquitous proceedings in this House; and which by God’s help, and the strength he has given me, I am now come to do. I command ye therefore, upon the peril of your lives, to depart immediately out of this place.

Go, get you out! Make haste! Ye venal slaves be gone! So! Lock up the doors. In the name of God, go!”

Amen.

  1. But it’s the judges who have caused this problem. There will be a Commons majority in favour of Article 50 if it goes to a vote and the unelected Lords dare not poke their noses in.

  2. //To the sentiment in the words.//

i.e. to the sentiments in the heart of every dictator who ever dissolved a parliament: his will is right, the will of the elected representatives of the people is wrong.

  3. Peter,

How is it the judges who have caused the problem? They were asked to consider what the law said on the matter and concluded what the law said on the matter.

  4. Sorry David,

Enlisting the help of a murderous, sectarian, racist bastard does not further your cause in 2016.

  5. Since when is a person, who was a member of the gentry, descended from the sister of the Tudor equivalent of the Prime Minister, and who was declared the de facto dictator of these islands, not a member of the elite?

  6. Cromwell – same guy who said the righteous judgment of God was the justification for his massacre of the people of Drogheda. Not exactly known for the human touch.

  7. There is loose talk among some in the US, and apparently in the UK, about some dreamy revolt against ” tyranny “.

Cool your jets, boys, the referendum just happened five minutes ago, and you will have your way on this, and should.

After Hillary steals the election by winning it fair and square, expect an uptick in ” revolution ” talk over here.

  8. How is it the judges who have caused the problem?

    Seamus

Clumsy wording. I should have writted “brought about this situation”. Obviously they have to do their job as they see it and their decision is not final in any case.

  9. “Gotta love how Oliver Cromwell can still trigger some”.

So does Stalin David, doesn’t make the “trigger” any less valid. Substitute Hitler if you wish!

The judges haven’t said Brexit can’t happen. They have simply said the legal steps needed to ratify it must be voted on by Parliament which is just obvious to me.

  11. Cromwell was known to be a pedant, and a slow speaker (he came from the Fens), so some praise must go to the bloke who held up the prompter in front of him….sheet after sheet of vellum dropping slowly, like autumn leaves, to the floor of the chamber..

  12. //The judges haven’t said Brexit can’t happen. //

Colm, the post isn’t against the judges, it’s against parliament.

I know but it has been triggered by the Judges decision. Parliament hasn’t even voted yet, so how can David claim the elites have scuppered the will of the people.

  14. How ?

He’s blaming Parliament for being the beneficiary of the judges’ decision.

Parliament will now get a say in Brexit, so it has to be attacked in good time.

In the bad days of reprisals etc in the Troubles in NI, that was called “getting in your retaliation in advance”.

  15. Cromwell was known to be a pedant, and a slow speaker (he came from the Fens)

Yes Bernard. They reckon that Cromwell died of malaria which was common in the Fens, even during the Little Ice Age. Shakespeare referred to it as “the ague”.

I can see it now, David, Allan, Harri and Pete Moore in Cromwell outfits riding on horseback into Parliament square muskets at the ready, bemused tourists snapping away thinking it’s one of those quaint historical reenactments 😜

  17. Hmmm, yes. I think Harri has Welsh connections, so it would be one representing each of the four British regions. The shear logical of it all guarantees victory.

I will be a new Pride’s Purge, with David driving out anyone with Irish connections, Harri the Muslims, Pete the blacks and Allan, of course, the Jews.

They could then strip the traitoress Elizabeth of her crown and offer it to Donald and Melania in the nearby Westminster Abbey (is that the place?).

  18. They could then strip the traitoress Elizabeth of her crown

Err, I do believe Mrs Windsor has already done that all by herself.

  19. I will be a new Pride’s Purge, with David driving out anyone with Irish connections, Harri the Muslims, Pete the blacks and Allan, of course, the Jews

The Four Horsemen will make Britain great again!
