Agit8, Yep, just another of those unfortunate ‘coincidences’! The Police Service of Northern Ireland said that Adams has been “arrested.” Sinn Fein are saying that Adams went voluntarily to be interviewed by cops. Both are true. He went by arrangement and was arrested when he arrived. This should clear the air once and for all. Put up or shut up time for the police. I expect Adams to be released without charge. But, but, but But what about all that ‘political policing’ and Sinn Féin being untouchable and if any of them were arrested the IRA would immediately return to violence and they’re afraid to upset the peace process which must be pacified at all coasts and, and, and …..? This is a formality and a piece of political theatre. Gerry Adams will continue to deny any knowledge of the abduction and killing and the police will release him saying they have ‘fully investigated’ the events. Regardless of whatever the actual truth is, this arrest is designed to both show that the police are ‘fearless’ in upholding the law in N.I. and no-one is untouchable. IF it turns out that the Gerry Adams was actively involved in the IRA (Special Ops, Disposal of Widowed Informers Division), then as a proud Republican fighting for a just cause etc etc, will he admit his involvement and say that “the end justified the means.” that it was inevitable that some innocents die in order to bring about peace? Hi Untouchable! What on earth have you been up to? Have you given your affections to another blog? 🙂 Will he admit his involvement and say that “the end justified the means.” that it was inevitable that some innocents die in order to bring about peace? In short, no, he won’t. For all the jibes I can’t imagine what it must have been like for that poor woman and her children. What must those children be feeling now? Hi Agit No I haven’t given my affections to any other blog. My heart will always be tangled up with this blog 🙂 . Its Just haven’t felt the desire to comment much recently. Back on topic – I doubt we will ever get the truth of the Jean McConville murder or indeed any other murderous acts if certain senior Republican leaders were involved. Political necessity in todays N.I. means some truths must remain hidden. Even if the evidence is obtainable, it won’t be used. Here’s an interesting comment from Slugger: If Adams is charged and I was a paratrooper who was in Derry on Bloody Sunday, I would be making arrangements to travel to a foreign place without an extradition treaty with the UK Breaking: Gerry Adams arrested at ‘meeting’ with the PSNI…. Its Just I haven’t felt the desire to comment much recently. Life is like that sometimes. God bless you anyway. Re the topic, we may yet see a real upset. Political necessity in todays N.I. means some truths must remain hidden. Even if the evidence is obtainable, it won’t be used. I suspect that you’re correct Colm and that there is a cosy, unwritten rule that prominant Republican, Unionist or British political establishment figures won’t be fingered in anything too serious. Since this is standard procedure in the UK (“arrest” means something a little different and more serious in the US) and G.A. volunteered for questioning…does anyone really think it will really hurt SF in upcoming elections as some are saying the arrest was designed to do (due to the timing)? I just flipped through several articles from around the world and the tone is “no big deal”. I forget (and haven’t followed it recently), is SF for or against a South Africa-style truth commission (where G.A. would be free to tell all)? Is Ivor Bell still in jail? “For all the jibes I can’t imagine what it must have been like for that poor woman and her children. What must those children be feeling now?” Exactly my thought, Agie. Ten children were left orphaned. An absolutely grotesque and cowardly crime. Unless the police know that they have enough evidence to convict Adams this was an asinine arrest because he’ll walk, and the arrest without a conviction will gain him further credibility with his base and give him the opportunity to crow that they can’t pin it on him. There is no need for sacred cows in NI. What will they do if a noose is put around their neck? Stir up a bunch of addled pensioners? The leading republican in the country arrested and held overnight. Not a shot fired or as much as a stone thrown. It looks to me like the peace process has been a huge success. “Arrest” means ssomething different under UK law where they can use an arrest as an early step in a criminal investigation. In the UK, an arrest is often an initial means of gathering evidence from a suspect before charges are brought. It’s semantics 🙂 mairin2 Where there is smoke, there is fire. There is a lot of smoke about this guy. People who read about this around the world will reasonably take away that he was involved in the murder of the mother of 10 children. Comments are closed.
