Lou Reed, a massively influential songwriter and guitarist who helped shape nearly fifty years of rock music, died today on Long Island. The cause of his death has not yet been released, but Reed underwent a liver transplant in May.

“All through this, I’ve always thought that if you thought of all of it as a book then you have the Great American Novel, every record as a chapter,” he told Rolling Stone in 1987. “They’re all in chronological order. You take the whole thing, stack it and listen to it in order, there’s my Great American Novel.”  Lou Reed

  1. Your Pale Blue Eyes is one of my favourite songs. An immense talent. May he rest in peace.

  2. I had a hard time picking just two songs. Went with one of my favorites and the second one probably his most commercially known hit.

  3. Well done. I almost returned to post at ATW to put up a post on this original’s passing. Walk on the Wild Side was probably his biggest hit here in the US (and most unlikely). Over in the UK the sweet A Perfect Day may have been the one they know best.

Sweet Jane is the one that got me. Check out The Cowboy Junkies’ version which is slow and mournful and this fitting for today.

  4. Very sad mews. I loved Lou Reed and, like Jenny in that great video you link to, Troll, my life was in a way changed by his music. I saw him perform a few years ago and he still had very much to offer. My favourites are Waiting for my Man, Run, Run, Run, All Tomorrow’s Parties (a masterpiece), Sweet Jane, Andy’s Chest, Temporary Thing, Families, and so many more.

Lou appeared in that crazy film “Smoke”. He was shown talking in some tobacco shop in Brooklyn NY, I think, telling of his friends who had died of lung cancer but that he was still not able to give up smoking.

  5. I loved Lou Read’s music. If I was forced to pick a favorite, I’d have to say Perfect Day. What a talent. He will be missed. RIP Lou.

  6. There is a youtube video of Lou Reed and Elvis Costello singing Perfect Day. Sort of an ATW moment.
