Did you read that the socialists that run  Spain has introduced a swingeing series of energy-saving measures which may be a foretaste of the kind of policies which will be forced upon an energy-hungry industrial world in the coming decades if we follow the green agenda? To howls of protests from motorists and mockery in parts of the press, the Socialist government plans to cut motorway speed limits to 50mph and town speeds to 25mph. New austerity rules will be imposed on the air conditioning and heating of all public buildings. Street-lighting will be cut by half. (Bet the criminals will just love that!) The lights are literally going out across Spain as the full implications of Greenism emerge. It is about State Control. It is the watermelon movement, green in the outside, red on the inside. How long before the lights start going out across the rest of Europe?

  1. A national bedtime of 9.30pm with lights out by 10 would save a fortune.

An army of Glimmer Persons could be employed, by the state. to peer in our windows to make sure nobody was using a laptop or anything subversive like that.

  2. A national bedtime of 9.30pm with lights out by 10…

would certainly help to improve the birth-rate. 🙂

  3. the Socialist government plans to cut motorway speed limits to 50mph

I’d like to see them police that! A month ago I drove from the French border at Girona, down to the Costa del Sol and didn’t see a single rozzer. 130 clicks the whole way, aircon blasting, music pumping, what a great journey. And not a single police car to be seen.

But that’s the problem: it was my choice, I paid for it, I enjoyed it, so the commies have to take it away.

As always, this has nothing to do with climate, the environment or any need at all. With socialists it’s always about showing who’s boss. Legislating for the sake of it. Not a single aspect of private, civil society must be allowed to happen without official approval and regulation.

It’s the very definition of the totalitarian state.

  4. "Street-lighting will be cut by half. (Bet the criminals will just love that!)"

We Irish have already solved that problem.

We’re going to shut ALL the street lighting down in conjunction with passing a law requiring ALL the manufacturers of dog food to add a non-toxic chemical to the food which will make the dog’s turds glow brightly in the dark.

Estimates are that after only one-week Irish streets will be TWICE as bright as they were with standard street lighting.

  5. Well, this -type- of thing will reduce energy consumption and take at least some money out of the pockets of the Saudis, etc. If the USA, UK, and Germany did the same, that would make a real dent.

Would love to see how the Germans could live with a 50mph speed limit though.

We "conservatives" should come up with our own proposals as to how to enact significant reductions in private and public energy use. This is, economically at least, wartime. There is no place for conscientious objectors and other shirkers.

In the short term at least, energy use must be cut significantly.. Unless you want your childrens inheritance to flow to Chavez the Nigerian govt and to the House of Saud.

I lift my glass of rioja to the Spanish socialists!

  6. Phantom,

I’ll drink to that too! There are too many cars, too many peeps rushing to get places that they don’t actually need to get to, if they stopped to think about it. And all because other peeps do so.

How depressing and Pavlovian it must be to be a consumer. And how glad I am I was born creative instead :0)

  7. I think that the Americans for one could reduce petrol use by 10% without batting an eye, to quote the racist rev. And what a difference that would make.

All we’d have to do is not drive 75mph on the interstate so often and plan trips a little better.

Instead we drive our SUVs as fast as we please and the money goes ultimately to Cuba via Chavez and to Hamas via the Iranians and Saudis and all the people we pretend to hate so much.

  8. But its not even selfishness. Its a lot worse than that. Selfishness I can understand.

Its stupidity- acting against the interests of one’s self, family, and nation. Apart from that, its OK.

  9. Phantom,

Sorry to argue this because you’re 90% right. The way I see it, it’s selfishness that drives (pun intended). It’s the childish wish to enjoy oneself in the moment without a thought to the consequences. Children behave in this completely self-centred way. They can because they have adults to take responsibility for them. But when adults start behaving like children…?

  10. Dawkins

    I hear you.

Some of it comes from the politically minded who want to stick it to the environmentalists.

But they do it by sending huge amounts of cash to Hugo Chavez and to the Saudis. How that can ever be justified I will never know.

Bad environmentalism, bad for the national economies, and bad politics.

We need a balanced approach. Mine!! Cheers!!

    Where’s my buddy Daphne?

  11. Dawkins –

I’ve some old flannel before but you’ve raised the bar today.

We drive because we have jobs to do, families and friends to see and interests to follow.

Some of us also like driving. I find it therapeutic and relaxing. What do you want? If I couldn’t drive I’d be forced to hit more liberals, which liberals would also whinge at.

So you sit at home wearing your peace slippers all you like, good luck to you. The rest of us will get on with enjoying life and making it a touch less unbearable than the socialists wish.

I assume this is your last day online. Computers require juice to run which comes from power stations, so that last comment of yours may have knocked over a baby fox and bought another Rolex for an Arab.

  12. No one is saying don’t drive or don’t use electricity.

But if you don’t like Chavez or the House of Saud, you should try not to be wiring so much funds to them every week

Its a question of balance. We don’t have to be environmental rapists on an Al Gore/John Edwards scale in order to enjoy a modern life.

  13. Pete,

Cleary there are two Pete Moores commenting here. The one wrote:

    …and the other wrote:

"A month ago I drove from the French border at Girona, down to the Costa del Sol and didn’t see a single rozzer. 130 clicks the whole way, aircon blasting, music pumping, what a great journey."

If you imagine that driving at "130 clicks" and all the rest is relaxing then your knowledge of human biology leaves much to be desired.

However, I enjoy driving too. I also enjoy hang gliding. That isn’t the point. The point is responsibility. To oneself and to one’s fellow humans. If you can’t see that then I’m afraid you are indeed thinking like the selfish child I referenced above.

  14. Dawkins –

Clearly you haven’t had the pleasure of of driving abroad. In a decent motor, on those gloriously empty dago motorways, with the sun shining and the cruise control doing it for you, 130 clicks is merely wafting along.

Now I see you ‘enjoy driving too’, and you ‘enjoy hangliding’, where I assume you don’t get aloft on a stiff breeze. Add in your heating and home entertainments and …. the point isn’t responsibility at all. The point is to come in here in a fug of your own moral righteousness and let’s hope they don’t spot what a hypocrite I am.

Sorry old son, you’re outed. You enjoy life but feel guilt for doing so. Well you’re not unloading any of that guilt onto me.

  15. Pete,

"Clearly you haven’t had the pleasure of of driving abroad."

My dear chap, I am abroad.

"In a decent motor, on those gloriously empty dago motorways, with the sun shining and the cruise control doing it for you, 130 clicks is merely wafting along."

No, you only think it is. Next time, have somebody monitor your stress levels. Or do the research.

But you still don’t get the point, do you? It has nothing to do with enjoying oneself and everything to do with responsibility. Like I said, adults understand this. Children don’t, because evolutionary factors have programmed them to be selfish. When adults behave thus then the law of the jungle comes into force, and you wouldn’t wish us to live by that, would you?

  16. Dawkins –

Was it you who emigrated recently? I mean driving on some decent hun/froggie/dago tarmac, not bouncing along some dirtrack in ongo bongo land. Really, vehicle technology today renders it wafting. And since I probably paid for the road, I’ll waft along it.

And I won’t take lessons from Lefties about the law of the jungle. It’s your bunch that brought the jungle to us with your kulturkampf and sexual revolution. It’s people like me who were jeered at, to the regret of most now.

Now I know what the image is in your mind. It’s of me, white-knuckled fists gripping the wheel, a snarling face, flared nostrils and steam piping from my ears, beeping and flashing my lights 6 inches from some Pedro in front.

Well it ain’t the case. I’m the politest little petal on the road, I’ll stick within the speed limit (130 clicks in Spain) and even let you out of junctions. In much of Spain you’ll be pushed anyway to find another driver to harrass even if you fancied an argument. Civilisation follows in my wake.

There you go. Now put the kettle on and have a cuppa. You must be knackered after swimming 10,000 miles to your new home, perish the thought you used a plane to get there.

  17. Of all the countries in Europe, Spain is going down the economic black hole the fastest.
Their batty, predominantly female parliament is phasing out all nuclear power stations, and plans to rely on renewable energy ie. wave, wind and sun, for the foreseeable future.
How this is going to supply 40 million people hasn’t been explained yet; a bit like the bridge that is presently proposed by the Socialist Govt, to cross to Morocco….!?
If you think OUR govt is on a hiding to no-where, just watch the serial incompetence that Spain can achieve.

  18. Pete,

"I won’t take lessons from Lefties"

I’m righthanded. Watch out for those southpaws though. They can come at a chap from unexpected angles. Afore you know it, you´re floored.

"Now I know what the image is in your mind. It’s of me"

Sorry, mate, I don’t fantasize about you. You shouldn’t project you know.

  19. Socialist/greenies are going about this all backwards.

You don’t cut off people’s lights, etc. – you offer them rebates or tax abatements for shutting off/lowering their consumption. Give them back their money and they’ll be all over it.

    Stupid government bureaucrats ………
