Anytime reality intrudes into the daily political narrative of this government, those responsible for introducing it can expect a severe slap across the face from the establishment.

“The UK’s official statistician weighed into the debate about foreign workers yesterday by highlighting the growing numbers of immigrants getting jobs while the British workforce declines. On the day that figures showed the number of people unemployed at a 12-year high, the Office for National Statistics chose to reveal that the number of foreign workers increased by 175,000 to 2.4 million last year while the number of British workers fell by 234,000 to 27 million.”

The implication here is that the Office of National Statistics is somehow playing politics by simply revealing the facts about the government policy of replacing local labour with foreign workers. Even in the teeth of a recession with native Brits losing their jobs, the surge in foreign workers continues. Amazing.

  1. David:

Amazing indeed. Do we have any figures on the situation here in Northern Ireland? I’d understood that employers were letting foreign workers go, or the workers were choosing all by themselves to go back home.

  2. Barry,

Don’t have them for NI but would be great to get them. My understanding is similar to yours but who knows?
