Another first for Ireland – Limerick has become the new official murder capital of Europe, with a ratio of more than seven homicides per 100,000 population. Glasgow in Scotland, which previously had the highest homicide rate in Western Europe, recorded just over 5 killings per 100,000 people. Firearms are a major problem here, with gardaí seizing over 500 guns a year – that is 10 times more than they recovered from republicans during the entire period of the IRA terror campaign. I wonder what has happened in Limerick that has brought this horrendous situation around? What is the government doing about it?

  1. >>I wonder what has happened in Limerick that has brought this horrendous situation around? <<

Limerick had to undergo no less than three vicious sieges in the 17th Century. The last was by the army of William of Orange, and their leaders then decided enough was enough and planted their own followers in the place to prevent further resistance.

    Now you know!

  2. Meant to add this link

And now I see that even the Adrlea Inn in Artane, Dublin, a hostelry I know quite well, temporarily lifted the smoking ban on Friday night.

  3. Limerick is a pretty small city, (population 91000 according to wikipedia, so I’m guessing that there were 7 murders in total) so the murder rate is likely to fluctuate a lot so it could just be a statistical blip.

  4. From the article "However, despite the rise in gun crime a WHO study rates Ireland as the safest country in Europe. "

  5. This problem has nothing to do with Guns. It is a proven fact that everywhere where the right to carry a firearm is loosened and more people own and carry a concealed deadly weapon crime goes down. Criminals get nervouse about attacking people who can shoot them.

One of the major problems in Ireland is that they do NOT punish people for the crimes they comit against other people instead they worship them as Heroes. The murder rate will continue to climb as long as the ownership of guns is curtailed and the worship of IRA/SF members continues.

    That’s the facts….

  6. GM/Troll

This has nothing to do with the IRA. The criminals are involved in a long running feud. Limerick used to be known as "stab-city" but now they use guns.

If you are not involved in the feud it’s one of the safest cities anywhere.

I certainly agree that I should have a gun. But I’m not so sure about everybody else.

  7. Henry the issue may not directly involve the IRA but it does involve it in a cultural sense.

If over years and years you don’t prosecute and persicute those that have committed acts of terror and as a government even grant refuge to those that have committed acts of violense and terror in other nations.

You send a message to the people that violence is acceptable. You can not decry the violent acts of any group when you make heroes out another group for commiting violent acts.

That is my whole problem with my ancestral land. Ireland condones and worships murderers and terrorists. They are no better than the Arabs

  8. Henry,

" That’s the kind of moral relativism"

    That’s not moral relativism.

  9. GM/T

You have no idea what you are talking about. Drug gangs fighting over turf and money is something that happens all over the world. In Limerick it is particularly vicious because of the family rivalry involved. There is nothing remotely like it in Galway, Cork or Waterford which would have been as much influenced by the north as Limerick.

It would be as lame to blame LA street gangs on George Washington and America’s own violent overthrow of British rule.

. You can not decry the violent acts of any group when you make heroes out another group for committing violent acts.

So you can’t decry Al Queada while admiring the US forces in Iraq?? That’s the kind of moral relativism that has the world the way it is.

  10. >>That’s the kind of moral relativism<<

Whatever about moral relativism, Squarespace has once again proven Einstein’s theory of the relativism of sequential time.

  11. Henry,

I think that whenever Troll posts it causes a rip in the fabric of the space/time continuum.

But on the relativism point, the people who flew planes into buildings on 9/11 were not ethical relativists. Nor were the people who started the Iraq war. In fact they are all moral absolutists like yourself.

  12. Henry that is ridiculas George Washington did not blow up woman and children in the streets of Britain that’s what it would take to equate him with the IRA.

Ireland is a country that has made heroes out of killers period. The two families would not dare to be as violent as they are if they were in a country that didn’t tolerate that kind of behavior. You and your ilk both here and there have created the mess where criminals are not prosicuted to the full extent for the use of violence.

It is you who don’t know what you are talking about.

The LA Street gangs can be laid directly at the feet of the Liberal Democrats, for several reasons,

    1) the fact that 75-80% of black youths are born to single mothers due to the destruction of the black family unit at the hands of FDR and Lyndon Johnson

    2) Illegal Immigration which is also directly laid at their feet for refusal to prosicute these people for breaking into our house and sanctuary cities, and I could go on and on.

At least with your last statement you recognize that the IRA is Equalevant to Al Qaeda.

  13. Henry,

"Are you telling me that is not a relativist statement?"

Yes. You think Troll is a relativist?

And the fact that no objective criteria exist does not mean that no criteria exist.

  14. Frank

You can not decry the violent acts of any group when you make heroes out another group for committing violent acts.

Are you telling me that is not a relativist statement? Of course it is. It denies the possibility of a moral basis for distinguishing between heroic acts of violence and any other acts of violence. Unless it is intended as an absolute statement of pacifism (which I doubt given an earlier pro-gun statement from the same source) then it repudiates any moral criteria for distinguishing between acts which are violent.

That can only be because no objective moral criteria can exist. Because if they existed we could deploy them.

  15. Henry either you are posting from the future or Pete Moore has just bought a second hand De Lorean (which would also explain why he appears to be posting from the Victorian age)

  16. Henry

so with this statement : "Are you telling me that is not a relativist statement? Of course it is. It denies the possibility of a moral basis for distinguishing between heroic acts of violence and any other acts of violence."

You are making the claim that the IRA bombing of children is a heroic act of violence.

If you feel the acts that the IRA have done are justifiable in any form you are a terrorist enabler Who should go to the parents of those children and explain how their kids desearve to die for the freedom of Ireland…

  17. Oh bullshit Henry if you want to fight England act like a real country and NOT a bunch terrorists. Form a real Army declare war and fight like men.

Instead you make heroes of little faggots that hide behind ski masks and target civilians with bombs Like I said you think like an Islamic terrorist

  18. GM/T

George Washington did not blow up woman and children in the streets of Britain that’s what it would take to equate him with the IRA.

Here are some of the children killed by the forces of the British state on the streets of Ireland. It may help you understand why your comments are one-sided to such an extent that nobody with any real knowledge of the situation could take you seriously.

Brian Stewart 13 years, Norglen Crescent, Turf Lodge, west Belfast, hit by a plastic bullet near his home on 4 October 1976, fired by members of the British army’s King’s Own Scottish Borders

Stephen McConomy 11 years, Dove Gardens, Derry City, hit by a plastic bullet on 16 April 1982, fired by a member of the British Army’s Royal Anglian Regiment. He died in hospital three days later

Frank Rowntree 11 years, Lower Clonard Street, Falls Road, west Belfast, shot with a (doctored) rubber bullet on 20 April 1972, at the Divis Flats, by members of the British Army’s Royal Anglian regiment.

Tobias Molloy 18 years, Fountain Street, Strabane, killed by a rubber bullet during the early hours of Sunday, 16 July 1972. The fatal bullet was fired by a British soldier at the ‘Camels Hump’

Stephen Geddis 10 years, St. Comgall’s Row, Divis Flats, Falls Road, west Belfast, struck on the head by a plastic-bullet on 28 August 1975, fired by a member of the British army’s Royal Anglian Regiment

Paul Whitters 15 years, Derry City, struck on the head by a plastic-bullet fired by a member of the Royal Ulster Constabulary on 15 April 1981. He died in hospital ten days later on 25 April.

Julie Livingstone 14 years, Carrigart Avenue, Lenadoon, west Belfast, was struck on the head by a plastic bullet at Stewartstown Road on 12 May 1981. She died the following day in hospital.

Carol Ann Kelly 12 years, Twinbrook, west Belfast, struck by a plastic bullet fired by a member of the British Army’s Royal Fusiliers, on 19 May 1981.

  19. Henry I also understand that people who get shot by plastic bullits are rioters that chose to put themselves in that situation.

The British Army did not randomly drive down the street shooting children (like the IRA have randomly planted bombs to kill children)

  20. Frank

Yes. You think Troll is a relativist?

No, I think he is confused and I was pointing to a relativist statement from him as evidence for that. Clearly he has no trouble choosing which kinds of violence he supports.

(I look forward to seeing your pre-cognitive reply)

  21. "Oh bullshit Henry if you want to fight England act like a real country and NOT a bunch terrorists. Form a real Army declare war and fight like men"

"Instead you make heroes of little faggots that hide behind ski masks and target civilians with bombs Like I said you think like an Islamic terrorist"

    K.O Troll!
(Glad Joe did okay last night over your way too)

  22. Troll posted:

Illegal Immigration which is also directly laid at their [FDR and LBJ] feet for refusal to prosicute [sic] these people for breaking into our house and sanctuary cities, and I could go on and on.

    And you do.

FDR died in 1945 and LBJ retired in 1968. The White House has been in the hands of the GOP for 28 of the 40 years since then, including the last eight. But you blame the Dems for the illegals. PATHETIC!

  23. GM/T

You are making the claim that the IRA bombing of children is a heroic act of violence.

That is an utterly idiotic accusation.

if you want to fight England act like a real country and NOT a bunch terrorists. Form a real Army declare war and fight like men.

If I ever decide to invade England I promise that’s the way I’ll do it. But if an armed thief came in your house would you offer him a sporting chance? 10 paces turn and fire? Or would you protect your home by any means necessary?

What would be the "manly thing to do" be in your opinion?

  24. Troll posted:

Henry that is ridiculas George Washington did not blow up woman and children in the streets of Britain that’s what it would take to equate him with the IRA.

If the British had won, Washington and the other rebels would have been executed for treason. And rightly so. But they won, thanks to the assistance of the French.

  25. And so we have come a long way from the problems of Limerick via the north, LA, time travel, and George Washington.

We do love to talk. But I want to end of a bright note so here are people from America who have come to Limerick to help. They are my idea of heros

  26. aren’t the Friers a drinking club…. oh wait thats the shriners.

    Peter

the French came in at the end after we had already achieved all but final victory, and to add to your point yes they would have been hung for treason and the British would have known who to hang because they did NOT wear masks, they formed an Army and fought like Men….

    Henry
your post of comparing the IRA to people defending their homes almost made me pee myself I was laughing so hard. If a man breaks into your house do you put on a mask and before you shoot him and then hide the body? No you do it like a man and shoot him and then call the cops IDENTIFY yourself and stand up for your rightous self defense.

If the IRA Scum were proud defenders of their homes they would not hide their identities and they would not join Castro and other 3rd world scum in selling their terrorist skills all over the world.

  27. So let’s see if this is correct.

Limerick with a homicide rate of 7 per 100,000 is now the official murder capital of Europe.

Given that Limerick has a population (2006) slightly over 91,000, that would mean they had approximately 6 or 7 actual murders.

And that stat earns it the right to be the murder capital of Europe.

    Right ?

  28. Let the record reflect that Troll’s inability to understand his own nation is eclipsed by his inability to understand others.

For the Irish readers of this blog, allow me to point out that Troll’s former residence of Philadelphia makes Limerick City look like Disneyland. But since he has left at least one nut with a gun is out of the City of Brotherly Love.

  29. GM/T

I have no bone to pick with your opinion of the IRA. Some people who know what they are talking about have the same opinion and it is a perfectly legitimate one. I would not trouble you with the complexities of my own position as I know it would be a waste of both our time.

Your point about Limerick is still nonsense but I have more of an understanding now of why it is nonsense.

  30. Actually, leaving aside Troll’s bizarre views on the origins of gang-crime in the O’Malley Park/Southill area, anyone I know who has been to Limerick always gives it a good review. It’s just a small part of the city that gives it its terrible name.

  31. >>Troll’s former residence of Philadelphia makes Limerick City look like Disneyland. <<

I’ve just seen that at least 32 people were shot in Chicago this weekend. What’s more, police say they’ve no reason to consider any of the shootings related!

Also in Troll’s Philadelphia, there were almost 400 murders last year, statistically more than one each day.

I wonder what terrorists the city governent is appeasing there (apart from the obvious one).

Couldn’t write a Limerick about that!

  32. Noel, the North’s a wicked place. I promise you won’t get assaulted if you head down South, Austin is especially passive since all the California progressives moved here and pushed the hippies out with escalating house prices. The hippies tended to get rowdy on Saturday nights and beat each other with one hit bongs.

  33. >>promise you won’t get assaulted if you head down South, Austin is <<

Daphne, Ive been all round the world but – and not trying to ingratiate myself here – honestly never had such a good time as when I was in Texas (alas for only 10 days).

As always, it was the people who make the place, and those folks there – although they could hardly be more different to me and my background – were simply the nicest, most entertaining and most communicative Ive ever met. (forgive me if I say they were perhaps also the craziest)
Their hospitality was embarrassing. On some nights I had a choice of about 4 places to sleep.

I hired a car (and what a wreck it was, had little $$ then) and drove from Houston to San Antonio and Austin and into West Texas. Stopping everywhere.
    I still dream about it.

Actually, funny as you mention CAL hippies. In the end I had to go back to Houston to catch a flight to visit a mate of mine in San Franciso. They lived on Haight Street, and were quite pissed off at me raving on so much about Texas!

  34. Noel, we are crazy in the nicest sense of the word. It makes me feel good to know that you enjoyed my state and people so much, if you ever return, you must come visit – we’ll give you more crazy goodness than you can handle! The Northern Cali’s are still jealous. 🙂

I have an invitation for you, a very proper one, could you please contact David and get funneled through to me privately? Many people are waiting for you to get in touch.

  35. The terrorists that they are appeasing in Philly are the class of people that the liberal policies of over 60 years of Democrat control of the city has created.

In other words fatherless youths addicted to drugs and violence living off of welfare supplimented by illegal incomes due to the fact that high taxes has driven all the businesses away and with them the jobs.

Philly is the true example of what liberal policy brings Joblessness, 90% out of wedlock birthrates, drug addition, violence and despair
