Hilel Neuer, executive director of the NGO UN Watch addresses  the United Nations Human Rights Council and speaks truth to power  (from the Friday, March 30, 2007 print edition of the Wall Street Journal ):

“ “ The dictators who run this Council, “ he said, “couldn’t care less about the Palestinians, or about any human rights.  They seek to demonize Israeli democracy, to delegitimize the Jewish state.”  He continued, “They also seek to distort and pervert the very language and idea of human rights.”

Council President Luis Alfonso de Alba furiously responded, “For the first time in this session I will not express thanks for that statement,” thus violating UN protocol.

  1. Meanwhile in the British Isles, but staying with Israel, Aosdana once again dipped into politics.

    Two motions :

composer Raymond Deane, an Aosdana member and head of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign, and proposed to offer support to Israeli artists who oppose their country’s practices. It was defeated after a lengthy debate.

Writer Margaretta D’Arcy. It encouraged Irish artists and cultural institutions "to reflect deeply before engaging in co-operation with Israeli cultural institutions" following last year’s call from Palestinian filmmakers and artists to end all co-operation with state-sponsored Israeli cultural events. Passed.
