The United Nations. It’s the “highest moral authority” for some on the Left. It’s an obscene immoral abomination for most on the right. But it has standards. So, for example, it refuses to countenance Israel as a member of the UN Human Rights Council, but holds no such qualms for more… progressive regimes over the years such as..erm.. Cuba, Libya, China, Russia to name but a few.
However, can you guess which in the news Nation looks set to get a seat on the UNHRC? Yes – that’s right – SYRIA. Looks like Boy Bashar has slaughtered just enough people to get Syria a seat on this important UN body which care so passionately, so deeply, about Human Rights.
In the past decade, the U.N. Human Rights Council elected Col. Muammar Gaddafi’s Libya as chair, hailed Sri Lanka’s “promotion and protection of all human rights” after its army had killed thousands of civilians, and convened an emergency session to lament the death of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, founder of the Hamas terrorist organization. Even so, historians will now have to decide whether the U.N.’s flagship human rights body is about to sink to a new low.
According to a U.S.-sponsored and EU-backed draft resolution that was debated today during informal meetings at the council in Geneva, the murderous regime of Bashar al-Assad is a declared candidate for a seat on the 47-nation U.N. body, in elections to be held next year at the 193-member General Assembly. As part of the U.N.’s 53-nation Asian group, Syria’s candidacy would be virtually assured of victory due to the prevalent system of fixed slates, whereby regional groups orchestrate uncontested elections, naming only as many candidates as allotted seats.

Sorry to go off topic here folks but speaking of surreal & absurd;
Has the Belfast beer summit died a death?
Paul
No! I am thinking about it and will post very shortly! Bear with me..beer with me even!
I await with anticipation David . . .
Disregarding the beer, as some of us clean-living and ever-so-slightly-slimmer folks do, the whole UN Human Rights record has always been a bit of a gurgle, but, hey, what’s 15- or 16,000 dead as against World Peace?
From the resolution
Is that the high standard that Cuba met?
What level of torture is required to fail, I wonder.
It is an organization founded on an ideal that can’t be met.
what the UN or the human rights counsel?
They also just announced they want 1% of every billionaires wealth to help the poor. They so desperately want the power to tax
