Some are protesting that the make-up of the alleged ‘Team GB’ which will be competing in the 2012 Olympics has drifted too far from the old idea of ‘I or my Parents were was born here, so I can represent my Country’ has been proven to be just a medal-winning sham.

When we have ‘British athletes’ from Ukraine in the Wrestling, a British-Somali national who runs under the name ‘Mo’, which is of course the short form of Mohammed Farah (wonder why he is maybe ashamed of his name?), along with a Cuban triple-jumper who seems to have done her own triple-jump from Cuba to Sudan to Britain; as well as many more. One other name springing, or rather hurdling, into view is American-born Tiffany Porter, who seemingly wishes to run for Britain but somehow cannot bring herself to learn or sing our National Anthem.

We have, I believe, accepted the lunacies of the Chinese Olympic singing selection criteria on the grounds that the deceit regarding the two small singers was only discovered after the event, as it were, but I always thought that the boundaries of Nation were sacrosanct. I still remember the lunacies surrounding Zola Budd’s British citizenship, and the Olympic race which descended into farce. She should not have been given a British passport, but the rules were bent for her, and those ‘bends’ have grown more blatant ever since.

Baron De Coubertin’s ideal, expressed in his words “The important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle, the essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.” seem to have not only been forgotten, but totally trashed. The ‘big boys’ of Politics, of which the Olympics seem to be just another side display, are only interested in one thing, the Medal count, and it was ever thus. It does not sit well with the spending of £10 billion of taxpayers money, just so a transplanted Cuban or Ukrainian can wave their golden trophies aloft, whilst saluting a Flag and a Nation for whom they have neither loyalty, nor respect!

  1. Playing ‘sports and games’ was never meant to be in any way a professional pastime, it was meant to be complementary to a civilised way of life, – a pleasant alternative to the rigours of earning a living, it provided ‘balance’ to ones lifestyle. That it was conducted with a Corinthian spirit gave it an added and honourable dimension.

Of course that was until the latter half of the last century, when ‘natonal pride’ took pride of place over individual achievement, the medal count meant everything.

Of course there have always been ‘pros’, in any sport – how else were newcomers and beginners to learn the skills and integrity required than from those who ‘have been there and done that’? that they earned a modest income from it was never begrudged them, but not until they had perhaps become less competitive.

That their competitive career should should remain untainted by financial concerns added much to their stature as individuals and as sportsmen.

The day that the Olympics became ‘open to all’ was the day that sport and the watching of it became totally pointless. It is now just another rancid branch of ‘showbiz’, where results are manipulated and controversies fostered and all in the name of ‘entertainment’. It could be said that entertainment had supplanted achievement as a worthwhile goal.

Does anyone know how long it took from the first known ‘fixing’ of chariot racing and gladiatorial contests to the final demise of Roman civilisation? 🙂

Today we hear of the court case to overturn the lifetime ban on some ‘athletes’, for drug use. Surely a betrayal of one of the core principals of any sport can have no other punishment? If competitors don’t believe in the ethical meaning of ‘sports’, how can true competiion be achieved?

“Olympics minister Hugh Robertson says he is ‘not comfortable’ with athletes who have served drugs bans coming to London for the 2012 Games.

Any drugs cheats who would have missed the London 2012 Olympics under an IOC ban will now be eligible for the Games after a court declared the rule to be unlawful.”

  2. Please vote for the most corrupt, useless, impotent, over-budgeted organization with the most over-paid and under-worked officials on the planet:

    A) The United Nations

    B) The International Olympics

    C) The European Commission- Brussels

    D) The European Council – Brussels

    E) The European Parliament- Brussels

    F) All of the Above**

**None of the above is NOT an option!

  3. It seems that no-one has much to say about drugs and corruption in international sport, and in the Olympics in particular. It seems that ‘celebs’ and the trash ‘entertainment’ that passes for ‘sport’ these days is more preferable to the display of honest integrity and effort that is at the core of genuine sport.

That ‘bread and circuses’ quote seems more relevant with each passing day…

  4. I too remember the Zola Budd episode. Whats worse than dishing out a passport in vain hope of a gold medal is not actually winning said gold medal!
